Vale's Copper Cliff Mine South Site

14:20
Vale's Copper Cliff Mine South Site played host to Ontario Mine Rescue's 2012 Provincial Mine Rescue Competition. In preparation for the event and during the event, many trips were made on the ramp down to and up from the 1500 foot level where the underground scenario was staged. The video shows one such return journey. The site, which is connected underground to the nearby Copper Cliff Mine North Site, has been on a care and maintenance program since 2009.

Exploring Mining Mountain & Vale School, Aravaipa Canyon, AZ

04:25
To avoid trespassing, I climbed Mining Mountain to access the long abandoned Vale School, in Aravaipa Canyon, Arizona. Mining Mountain / Vale School is just south of Aravaipa Creek, a mile south of Brandenburg Mountain, between Satathite Mountain, Holy Joe Canyon and Flat Top Mountain. Not a ghost town, per se, Vale School is the ruins of a one-room ranch school. Google search gives nothing but spammy results, so no idea when Vale School closed; judging by the graffiti in the ruins, the 1960s at the latest. The silver mine was active in the 1980s. Lots of flowers, and blooming cactus in the area during April. Also spotted a lizard and a cardinal. Triplog & photoset @ http://hikearizona.com/photoset=24939 . (2013-04-26)

Nettlebridge Vale

03:13
The Mellis Valley known as the Nettlebridge Vale at its western end, Wadbury Vale in its centre, and Vellis Vale at its eastern end has a long industrial and transport history. Coal mining in the Mellis Valley started in Roman times and continued until the closure of Mendip Colliery in 1969. Limestone continues to be quarried in the Vale. Mining and quarrying lead to two serious efforts to improve transport in 1796 the Dorset and Somerset canal was authorised but incomplete it went bankrupt in 1802 and the Nettlebridge Valley Railway was authorised in 1874 but abandoned in 1878. Industry had to make do with inadequate industrial tramways linking to the Somerset & Dorset [S&D] and Great Western [GWR] Railways. I have changed history with the canal being bought to completion and an expansionist London South Western Railway [LSWR] driving a branch east from the S&D [jointly owned by the London South Western & Midland Railways] at Binegar and the GWR buying the Bilboa Tramway and converting it to a light railway. Then sanity breaks out the ‘mainline’ along the Vale becomes jointly owned by the GWR and S&D. In 1923 the London South Western Railway is merged into the Southern Railway and Midland Railway is merged into the London Midland & Scottish Railway. In 1948 the line becomes part of British Railways. The Circle has three layouts based in the Mellis Valley Nettlebridge Vale, Wadbury Vale, and Vellis Vale. The attraction is having the S&D (Southern and London Midland Scottish Railways) at the west end of the valley and the GWR at the east end of the Valley. As several circles members model the Great Western, Southern, and London Midland & Scottish Railways and their successors this is a convenient mix. An off shoot of the Pines Express uses the ‘mainline’ to link Manchester and Southampton but other services on the ‘mainline’ are more pedestrian local passenger and goods trains. The light railway provides a passenger service and moves coal and limestone to an interchange with the ‘mainline’ and to the canal. Both the mainline and light railway serve the industries attracted by good transport, coal and limestone. Emotional 'last skip' for Sudbury's Frood-Stobie Mine

03:40
It was a bittersweet morning for hundreds of Vale workers — past and present — who gathered for a ceremonial last skip at the 130-year-old Frood-Stobie Mine on May 30. This mine has seen success and tragedy, hardship, innovation, and even two royal visits on its way to hauling 375 million tons of nickel ore from the depths of the earth to its surface — more than any other complex in the history of the Sudbury basin. The stoic mine now enters a phase of “care and maintenance” but its days as the workhorse of Vale's Sudbury operations appear to be over. This closing ceremony for Frood-Stobie was capped by the ceremonial last skip — the hauling of one final load of ore to the surface. The gathered crowd watched on a closed-circut feed and cheered as the doors opened and the crushed rock from deep in the ground spilled out one last time.

Brazil VALE protest at Mayfair Hotel

03:03
On 4th Dec 2015, the world's biggest ore producer, Vale, held a shareholders' meeting and press conference at the Mayfair Hotel, London. A month earlier, on 5th November, two tailings dams burst in the state of Minas Gerais in the south-east of Brazil. The dams were managed by Samarco, a joint venture between Vale, and the Anglo-Australian mining giant, BHP Billiton. An environmental disaster was unleashed as 60 million cubic metres of toxic slurry flattened five settlements and filled the River Doce floodplain. Twenty three people were killed, 600 displaced, and a quarter of a million left without clean water. The dirty mud has since travelled 500km to the ocean, and despite assurances from Vale, the UN have backed up local studies that show the effluent is high in toxic metals including arsenic. This is the fifth accident in two years in the area, and Vale (given the 'Nobel Prize of Shame' in 2012) had ignored prior warnings about tremors and the structural integrity of their dams. Protesters gathered outside the Mayfair hotel and gave Vale a demonstration of mud contamination and a clean-up, as Brazilian performance artist, Tiago Gambogi, was joined by independent activists, supported by members of London Mining Network, and BP or not BP.

Underground Hard Rock Mine Tour of Vale Chasm in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

06:56
Pierre Repooc Productions - URL:http://www.youtube.com/c/PierreRepooc Part of the Science North interactive museum complex in Sudbury, Ontario, a separate museum called Dynamic Earth includes this teaching tour of hard rock mining for nickel and copper. Located seven stories below the surface, this "hard rock mine" is a teaching experience and explains the mining methods used to extract nickel and copper from the hard rock of the Sudbury Nickel Basin, by explaining the mining methods of the 1890's, 1950's and the present day. I personally have been to the bottom of the Creighton Mine, a currently active nickel mine in Sudbury, Ontario and I must say that this tour experience is about as close to real hard rock mining as you are likely to get. Mayor Duarte Junior says he will demand financial compensation, not only from the operator Samarco, but also from the Anglo-Australian company BHP and Vale, of Brazil. The mining waste continues to flow 400 kilometers down the Doce River, destroying agricultural land and polluting water supplies. State health officials are warning people who come into contact with the mud to throw away their clothes. The Mining and Smelting of Canadian Nickel / Coniston ,Ontario

49:37
This historical silent film documents the entire mining process as it was done in the 1930s. The Village of Coniston experienced a rapid and large growth spurt when in 1913, the Mond Nickel Company moved its smelting operations from Victoria Mine (a small mining community located west of Sudbury) to Coniston. Prior to 1913, the Mond Nickel Company had been operating in Victoria Mine for thirteen years. When the company could no longer expand its mining operations in the area, it chose to relocate to Coniston for two important reasons: firstly, because the land in Coniston was adequate for the company's purposes, and most importantly, because the community had railway junctions for two different railway companies within its townsite. This factor would enable the Mond Nickel Company to ship its mined ore from the Sudbury Basin to Coniston for smelting and from there, send the processed minerals to Clydach, Wales for refining, all with little fuss.
