Mobile Phone Tracking and You: Loading location data from your cell phone in Google Maps and ArcMap

13:52
This GIS tutorial walks through how to get location data from your cell phone as represented in Google Maps into ArcMap. This tutorial covers the basics of using the KML to Layer tool in the ArcToolBox and an alternate way to load kml data back into ArcMap. I've included a "cleaned" version of the KML file below if you'd like to try and pull the file into ArcGIS yourself. If you do, see if you can figure out the following: 1. Where I stayed on 08/17/2013 2. What I did during the day 3. Where I went in the evening The timestamps will be helpful in making an educated guess. Remember, the data you're working with hasn't been cleaned so there will be errors in the file. When working with the data, think a bit about what this data can tell someone when combined in aggregate over a period of time (even just a week's worth of data can be very informative as to a person's behavioral patterns). From a public health perspective, the monitoring of such information can introduce significant ethical issues for the researcher. For instance, a public health official might be tempted to use such a data collection scheme to try and determine segments of the population most likely to visit clinic locations, but what if that same information was used to target specific populations (say, persons who all happen to visit a place of worship?) Public health officials are more likely to be very sensitive to such issues, but others may not. If you are a public health practitioner (or are in school to become one), consider it part of your duty to inform others as to the challenges that location-based information can introduce to both the research and the general public. A copy of the cleaned CSV file used in the tutorial can be found here: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=07afb38edab347c4ba7d1758f11f0c08 For more on this topic, see: maps.google.com/locationhistory support.google.com/gmm/answer/3118687?hl=en resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//00120000004w000000 Presentation on similar topic: http://169.226.136.224/mediasite/Viewer/?peid=9ab7e706a4424f40b57f19f9ca0a5cab1d

How Cell Towers Work: Hands-On!

09:28
Fun fact: when I was selling mobile phones back in 2004, I would spend the store's slow days taking online training courses reserved for my employer's engineers, fascinated by the networks that made mobile phones work. Twelve years (and a change of career) later, my network curiosity still burned strong. So I asked AT&T to let me go hands-on with a cell site – and to my great surprise, the carrier said yes! Come along as I scope out not one, but two cell sites: one hidden in the steeple of a church, the other perched high atop the tallest mountain in the Northeast. In the process we'll learn about RF energy, what happens when the power goes out, and why the term "tower" isn't always accurate. [SUBSCRIBE] https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSOpcUkE-is7u7c4AkLgqTw?sub_confirmation=1 [ABOUT THIS VIDEO] MrMobile's Tower Tour was produced based on a pitch by MrMobile to AT&T in the Spring of 2016. To make this video possible, AT&T provided access to two cell sites and several network engineering personnel. AT&T also reviewed MrMobile's final script for technical accuracy, but no editorial changes were made as a result of the company's input. Travel expenses were entirely paid by MrMobile/Mobile Nations, and there was no consideration paid to MrMobile by AT&T for the production of this video. Time series analysis of geometry data collected by phone

05:06
Release 13.12 of Smap adds the ability to do time series analysis on the server. You can select any date from the survey to be your time axis and then show another question from the survey in a graph, map or table along that time axis. In this video the collected data includes shapes, that is polygons. A server side calculate function is added to the survey to compute the area of each of these polygons after the data is loaded. The video then shows how changes in these areas over time can be shown on a map and graph. The map is then exported as a report so that it can be shared by the speed evidence portal, email, Facebook or twitter. Smap is an open source data collection tool for collecting data via mobile phones. It supports fieldTask or odkCollect on Android devices as well as HTML5 browsers using Enketo. Researchers from the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) and the University College London have developed a text analysis iPhone app called Textal. The term text analytics describes a set of linguistic, statistical, and machine learning techniques that model and structure the information content of textual sources for business intelligence, exploratory data analysis, research, or investigation. Textal app allows you to create wordclouds from your favourite text, website, tweet stream, or document. Textal then allows you to interact with the wordcloud, to drill down further and explore the statistics and the relationships between words in the text. Textal project is part of the NCRM and UCL Digital Humanities programmes, and you can find more info in http://www.textal.org/ Filming and editing by João Retorta. Music by Sérgio Faria. PowerSpy: Location Tracking using Mobile Device Power Analysis

01:00
Modern mobile platforms like Android enable applications to read aggregate power usage on the phone. This information is considered harmless and reading it requires no user permission or notification. We show that by simply reading the phone’s aggregate power consumption over a period of a few minutes an application can learn information about the user’s location. Aggregate phone power consumption data is extremely noisy due to the multitude of components and applications that simultaneously consume power. Nevertheless, by using machine learning algorithms we are able to successfully infer the phone’s location. We discuss several ways in which this privacy leak can be remedied.

Design Study: Mobile Trend Analysis - Scenario #1

03:02
Analyzing trends in large text data collection for technology management can help to early be able to identify upcoming technologies that can heavily impacts markets and branches. While trend analysis is common in form of consultancy or in-house analysis and is performed over long period of time, there are also regular questions that came up in meetings, discussion or brain storming. Actually, answering such kind of questions, e.g. “How relevant is the ‘fuel cell’ for the German e-mobility strategy?”, is almost impossible – in particular if no computers are close to perform bigger searches. In frame of a student master thesis the idea was, how can a mobile application be designed to be beneficial to answer such on-the-go questions? Within the study three fundamental different designs where implemented and in an empirical evaluation validated against a broad and heterogeneous user group. The scenario #1 (of 3) is more likely a classical transformation from a desktop to a mobile solution and is optimized for pragmatic use. So, many of the included user-interface features are strongly related to standards and to consider the mind in particular. The intention is to support a high mental agility. The scenario #2 (of 3) is more likely a modernized approach to make the use more interactive and spontaneous, but it still considers goals and pragmatical requirements. So, many of the included user-interface features are balanced between mind and gut feeling. The intention is to support a fair balance between mental agility and mental serenity. The scenario #3 (of 3) is more likely a complete ‘anarchy’ approach to enable exploration of the unexpected by addressing the user’s impulsivity. So, many of the included user-interface features are strongly related to consider the gut feeling. The intention is to support a high mental serenity. Collaborative Data Analysis between CAVE and Vive

01:07
Clip from a collaborative visualization session at KeckCAVES, between the CAVE and an HTC Vive head-mounted VR system. This clip was recorded by post-doc Dr. Carlye Peterson during a recent meeting of a multi-campus NSF-funded paleoceanography project involving UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The project is investigating changes in global ocean flow patterns in response to change in global climate between the last ice age and today, based on differences of stable isotope distributions in benthic core samples collected at hundreds of sites across the globe. The visualization software shown in this clip is 3D Visualizer, looking at combinations of 3D isotope field reconstructions superimposed over a high-resolution global bathymetry model. Collaboration between individual VR systems (in this case CAVE and Vive) is supported by the Vrui VR toolkit's collaboration infrastructure add-on. Remote users are embedded into each VR system as real-time, pseudo-holographic 3D video avatars captured by one or more 3D cameras integrated into each VR system. Know about SIM card | SIM used in Mobile phone

03:25
Subscribe us https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL0Rx2AaUwomAe3FGKtgCBA Know about SIM Card Introduction SIM stands for subscriber identity module or subscriber identification module, is an integrated circuit that securely stores the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) and the related key used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile telephony devices. It also contains its unique serial number (ICCID), security authentication and ciphering information, temporary information related to the local network. History The first SIM card was made in 1991 by Munich smart-card maker Giesecke & Devrient. The SIM was initially specified by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute in the specification with the number TS 11.11. This specification describes the physical and logical behaviour of the SIM. With the development of UMTS the specification work was partially transferred to 3GPP. Design Modern SIM cards allow applications to be loaded when the SIM is in use by the subscriber. These applications communicate with the handset or a server using SIM application toolkit. The operating voltage of the majority of SIM cards launched before 1998 was 5 V. SIM cards produced subsequently are compatible with 3 V and 5 V. Formats SIM cards have been made smaller over the years, functionality is independent of format. Full-size SIMs were followed by mini-SIMs, micro-SIMs, and nano-SIMs. Full size SIM has the size of a credit card (85.60 mm × 53.98 mm × 0.76 mm). The mini-SIM card has the same contact arrangement as the full-size SIM card and is normally supplied within a full-size card carrier, attached by a number of linking pieces. The micro-SIM was designed for backward compatibility. The major issue for backward compatibility was the contact area of the chip. Retaining the same contact area allows the micro-SIM to be compatible with the prior, larger SIM readers through the use of plastic cutout surrounds. The SIM was also designed to run at the same speed (5 MHz) as the prior version. The nano-SIM card was introduced on 11 October 2012, when mobile service providers began selling it in various countries. The nano-SIM' measures 12.3 × 8.8 × 0.67 mm and reduces the previous format to the contact area while maintaining the existing contact arrangements. A small rim of isolating material is left around the contact area to avoid short circuits with the socket. The 0.67 mm thickness of the nano-SIM is about 12% less than the 0.76 mm of its predecessor. SIM and carriers The SIM card introduced a new and significant business opportunity for MVNOs — mobile virtual network operators — who lease capacity from one of the network operators rather than owning or operating a cellular telecoms network, and only provide a SIM card to their customers.

GTTN Introducing: Wood DNA Analysis and Reference Data

02:49
What are the advantages of DNA wood analysis? How does the collection of reference data work and why is it so important? Why should companies invest in further wood analysis instead of only relying on certification? GTTN discussed these questions with Dr. Celine Blanc-Jolivet, Researcher at Thünen Institute and leader of a GTTN task force dealing with wood DNA sampling, lab work and data analysis guidelines. The video was shot and edited with a mobile phone and is the first of a series of mobile reporting videos introducing timber tracking tools.
