THE REAL HISTORY OF THE GOLD RUSH (OLD WILD WEST DOCUMENTARY) At the end of 1853, San Francisco was a city on the fast track. A few years earlier, the seaside town had been a sleepy village of just 800 people. But the sight of gold in the waters of the American River set the stage for an event that would forever change a city, a fledgling state, and the nation. Incorporating rare and exquisite daguerreotypes and original recreations, this film offers a vivid portrait of a seminal event in America's history.

Early Kalgoorlie WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1893--1900 Gold Rush Aboriginals History
ONE OF A SERIES ON KALGOORLIE SEE http://video.google.com.au/videosearch?q=DON+PUGH+KALGOORLIE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalgoorlie Kalgoorlie is a Western Australian city located about 600 km east of Perth. Its current approximate population is 30,000. For eastward train travellers, on the trans-continental "Indian Pacific" service, Kalgoorlie is the last town encountered for hundreds of kilometres before entering the vast expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. The "Prospector" train run by Transwa provides daily services to Perth In June 1893, prospectors Patrick (Paddy) Hannan, Tom Flanagan, and Dan O'Shea were travelling to Mt Youle when one of their horses cast a shoe. During the resultant halt in their journey, the men noticed signs of gold in the area, and decided to stay put. On June 17, 1893, Hannan filed a Reward Claim, leading to hundreds of men swarming to the area in search of gold and Kalgoorlie was born. The mining of gold, along with other metals such as nickel, has been a major industry in Kalgoorlie ever since. The concentrated area of large gold mines surrounding the original Hannan find is often referred to as the Golden Mile, and is considered by some to be the richest square mile of earth on the planet. The town's population was about 30,000 people in 1903. DON PUGH producer: Don Pugh

Australian Gold Rush
history kalgoorlie The town was founded in 1892, when gold was discovered in the area. Australia had seen several major gold rushes over the previous three decades, mostly centred on the east coast, but these had mostly been exhausted by the 1890s. With the discovery of a new goldfield, an entire new gold rush began, with thousands flocking to the area. By 1898, it was the third largest town in the colony, with a population of 15,000, and another 10,000 in the surrounding region. At its peak, 700 mining companies based in Coolgardie were registered with the London Stock Exchange. The town also supported a wide variety of businesses and services, including a railway, a swimming pool (first public baths in the state), many hotels and several newspapers. The value of Coolgardie to the colony in the late 1890s was so significant that it was used as leverage to force Western Australia to join the Australian federation - Britain and the eastern colonies threatened to create a new state to be named Auralia around Coolgardie and other regional goldfields, such as Kalgoorlie, if the government in Perth did not agree to hold a referendum on federation. The Western Australian government reluctantly complied and a referendum was held just in time to become a founding state in the new federation. When federation did occur in 1901, Coolgardie was the centre of a federal electorate, the Division of Coolgardie. Soon after in November 1901, Alf Morgans from the state electorate of Coolgardie was elected Premier of Western Australia. However, the gold began to decrease in the early 1900s, and by World War I, the town was in serious decline. The federal electorate was abolished in 1913 due to the diminished population as many of its residents left for other towns where the gold was still plentiful, and it soon ceased to be a municipality. The situation remained unchanged throughout the century, as its population slipped to around 200 and it became a virtual ghost town. Despite this, many of the buildings from its peak were retained, which in recent years has helped start a small revival in the town's fortunes. The development of a tourist industry has once again created some employment in the town, resulting in a small increase in population, and it appears to be no longer in danger of dying completely. NHD Movie Australian Gold Rush
Process Paper I chose the Australian gold rush as my topic for my National History Day project, because I've been interested in Australia for a long time. I have always wanted to travel there to see the deserts, animals, the cities. When I decided I would do something based on Australian history I had no idea where to start. I went to Google and typed in "turning points in Australian history". The first thing that came up was the gold rush so I decided to read about it. The more I read the more I realized if anything was a turning point in Australian history it was the gold rush. I first decided to start with a book to go about my research. I worked with my school librarian to .find a book either at our school or other libraries in the area that would send me one to school. The first school declined several times. Then we found a book solely on the Australian gold rush: Gold Australians gold and lost treasures. As we were waiting for the book I used online sources such as Historystudycenter.com. This was very helpful while I was waiting for the book to come. It had newspaper articles from back then and also had secondary sources as well. When the book came it had everything about the gold rush. From the different types of sleuths to the "Eureka Revolt". I to do a documentary because my project is about gold. I wasn't going to write a paper about gold because people would much rather look at gold rather than just hear or read about it. This left me to the performance, website, or documentary. I wasn't going to do the performance because I can't act and I still wouldn't be able to show the gold. It came down to the documentary or website. I chose documentary because it was outside of my comfort zone. I have only done one previous documentary, but I was on a topic I knew and everyone in my family knew, which was my grandfather. This was a completely new topic, I decided I would give it a try. I started out with an outline for my script. I chose the big five main ideas. I then outlined them into smaller sections. I then started writing my script. I also while I was writing my script I was collecting three to seven photos per smaller category. I then recorded my script into eleven different sections. I then used Movie Maker to put the voice over with the photos. My project relates to the theme, because if it were not for the gold rush, Australia could be in four different states of stableness and unity. They could either still be completely separated with some rich districts and some not, be together but have the whole country in poverty, still have the economy and government based on agriculture, or have had all the governments disintegrate and have it be a third world country. That is why I chose The Australian Gold Rush as my National History Day project.

ONE OF A SERIES ON KALGOORLIE SEE http://video.google.com.au/videosearch?q=DON+PUGH+KALGOORLIE History KAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA In June 1893, prospectors Patrick (Paddy) Hannan, Tom Flanagan, and Dan O'Shea were travelling to Mt Youle when one of their horses cast a shoe. The narrow gauge Government railway line reached Kalgoorlie in the 1896, and the main named railway service from Perth was the overnight sleeper train The Westland which ran until the 1970s. In 1917, a standard gauge railway line was completed, connecting Kalgoorlie to the city of Port Augusta, South Australia, across 2000 km of desert, and consequently the rest of the eastern states. The standardisation of the railway connecting Perth (which changed route from the narrow gauge route) in 1968 made it possible for rail travel from Perth to Sydney - and the Indian Pacific rail service commenced soon after. Places, famous or infamous, that Kalgoorlie is noted for include its water pipeline, designed by C. Y. O'Connor, which brings in fresh water from Mundaring Weir near Perth; its Hay Street brothels (the street itself was apparently named after Hay Street, Perth); its two-up school; the goldfields railway loopline; the Kalgoorlie Town Hall; the Paddy Hannan statue/drinking fountain; the Super Pit; and Mt Charlotte lookout. Its main street is Hannan Street, named after the town's founder. The town of Kalgoorlie and the shire of Boulder amalgamated on February 1, 1989 to become the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalgoorlie DON PUGH producer: Don Pugh
