5 - Star Island
Located in New Hampshire just 7 miles off the coast, this island has everything from buried pirate treasure to a horrendous outbreak of Scarlet Fever to ghost ships and even to a demon dog rumoured to haunt the cemetery with glowing red eyes. Settled by fishermen in the early 1600s this island has been rife with hauntings and tales of ghosts for centuries. The oldest building on the isle is the Oceanic hotel has a reputation for evil premonitions with reports of heavy furniture being dragged across the floorboards and footsteps sometimes heard racing up and down stairs. Doors will slam shut and visions of a pale man has been seen vanishing through walls. Inside the chapel it is rumoured you can still hear a choir singing, even though no one has worshipped there for many years.
4 - Poveglia Plague Island
It's been called the Island of Madness and A Cesspool of Dread. This dismal island once served as a plague quarantine station for Venice Italy, rumours say that 50 percent of the soil is composed of the remains of the dead. As the bubonic plague spread it became known as the Black Death, it is said that between 1629 and 1631 an estimated 80,000 people perished in just 7 months here. Some say that the corpses of around 160,000 men, women and children ended here, their bodies burned, the human ash now composts for the decay ridden island. In 1922 a mental asylum was renovated from existing buildings. Patients immediately began complaining of wailing ghouls, disembodied howling voices, and skeletal apparitions, but they were ignored, deemed deranged and insane. It is said one of the sadistic doctors at this psychiatric hospital conducted lobotomies on many unwilling patients, using hammers, nails, drills, and chisels to do so. Mysterious experiments are rumoured to have been performed within the hospital's bell tower, screams of pain are said to still be heard late at night. The stories say this doctor was driven mad by the phantoms of those he made suffer and killed, he threw himself from the bell tower, the asylum was closed in 1968, but many say something sinister remains.
3 - Norfolk Island
This small island is situated in the Pacific Ocean as part of Australia's external territories, it's found just 877 miles shy of the mainland. This grisly location has been used by the British Government as a dumping site for the most heinous of criminals. Thousands of convicts ended up here in what they called Hell on Earth. Since 1824 this island has been renowned as one of Britain's most notorious penal colonies, the likes of torture, lashings, murders and rapes were viciously common. Visions of ghosts are often seen by the locals, an Australian documentary called The Extraordinary from the mid 90s paints a ghastly vision of ghosts, demons and eerie hauntings.
2 - Ellis Island
This desolate spot has also been called the Tears Island. Over 12 million immigrants are known to have been processed on Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954, but many were rejected for health reasons, more than 3,500 died here, either in the hospital or committed suicide. Between 1909 and 1911 alone, 420 people, 85 percent of which were children, died in quarantine in two separate hospitals on the island. People have reported doors opening and closing on their own, muffled crying can often be heard leaking from walls, and the spirits of children are often seen drifting in and out of vision.
1 - North Brother Island
Located in New York City's East River, between the Bronx and Riker's Island, this site once housed a hospital for quarantinable diseases. In the 1940s the island was transformed into a housing centre for war veterans and their families, but by 1951 most of them choose to leave, many refusing to give reasons why. Rumours say many of those veterans died from mysterious causes. In the 1950s a center opened to treat adolescent drug addicts, but by the early 1960s widespread staff corruption forced the facility to close, with many deaths never fully explained, the island has become a breeding ground of paranormal activity. Visions of pale faces with their mouths hung screaming, echoes of children wailing for their parents, and a feeling of cold dread all encompass this strange creepy place.
