WA bid to lift mining enrolment numbers
WA bid to lift mining enrolment numbers: https://thewest.com.au/news/wa/wa-bid-to-lift-mining-enrolment-numbers-ng-b88900474z. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbWtzbN6881kEvrymbdFxCg?sub_confirmation=1 The WA mining industry has come together in a “call to arms” after successive cohorts of school leavers ignored the industry on which the State has built its reputation. A big decline in mining-related university enrolments has led to fears of a skills shortage at a time of recovering iron ore prices, a strong gold market, growth in automation and robotics and a forecast lithium boom.A task force comprising the Chamber of Minerals and Energy, universities, schools and governments has been set up to address the “critical issue” which industry has warned could affect WA’s productivity and global competitiveness.Mining executives told The Weekend West the industry had “dropped the ball” when it came to promoting mining careers and have pledged to win over the hearts and minds of teenagers. University enrolments have fallen as much as 80 per cent in five years in some mining degrees. The Minerals Council of Australia predicts that by 2020 the number of mining engineering graduates will fall 81 per cent. Saracen Mineral Holdings managing director Raleigh Finlayson, who is president of the WA School of Mines Alumni, heads the task force. “We are trying to get collaboration between industries that wouldn’t always collaborate, but one thing we have in common is the need for future skill in the workforce,” he said.“We’re all in this together. We’re moving from it being an issue, to an opportunity.”Mr Finlayson said artificial intelligence, automation and robotics were leading to new careers. Processing of lithium and other battery minerals was expected to create thousands of highly skilled, highly paid jobs.A State Government task force was set up recently to capitalise on the lithium expansion, which has more than $3 billion worth of projects in the pipeline. It comes as the Pilbara’s three biggest iron ore miners, Rio Tinto, BHP and Fortescue Metals Group, plan to build $9.5 billion worth of new mines in the next four years.Mr Finlayson said research suggested the cyclical nature of mining was deterring school leavers. The task force would focus on ways to attract WA’s best and brightest students to mining, and to prepare for and adapt to commodity price cycles.Curtin University will open a technical school on St Georges Terrace next year to offer “bite-sized” modules and courses to re-skill workers and meet demand from new areas.Curtin Vice-Chancellor Deborah Terry said it was a “big shift”. The school would teach subjects such as data analytics and digital courses to cater to the “new face” of mining.“We need to offer different study opportunities, and different sorts of courses in locations and at times that suit employees,” she said.Mining-related enrolments at Curtin, including at its WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, fell 15 per cent in 12 months. The trend is most evident in mining engineering, in which enrolments have plummeted 83 per cent since 2013. Zinfra Powers the Solomon Mine
The number of Australian greenfields projects is shrinking, primarily because of the risks associated with long exploration times, minimal infrastructure, and exploding costs. So when Fortescue Metals Group decided to develop its $3.2 billion Solomon iron ore mine located in the Hamersley Ranges, west of Fortescue’s existing Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek mines, there was a lot to consider in terms on infrastructure development. Namely a $1.2 billion port and loading facility, rail infrastructure which is expected to cost about $850 million and a further $850 million to develop the mine itself. FMG’s power infrastructure project manager Graham Martin explained providing power to the site was a complex project, costing $40 million and taking 11 months to complete. Infrastructure developer Zinfra won the contract to design, supply, install, and construct high voltage overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines as well as three 132kV substations.

Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them
Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them: https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/mining/thousands-of-mining-jobs-are-waiting-in-western-australia-but-aussies-dont-want-them/news-story/9abb09bee9c85fc6419597a14e77df3e. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd_ODCcrc4jEWgi4qYyy0wg?sub_confirmation=1  From 2012 to 2016, the mining industry experienced a severe downturn, culling close to 60,000 jobs and making full-time work an almost impossible get. But now, especially in Western Australia and Queensland, the mining industry is on the road to recovery — and companies are begging Aussies to come and work for them. According to the latest data from SEEK, the mining, resource and energy sector has consistently recorded the largest growth in job ads for the past 11 months. The sector is throwing out 32 per cent more job ads now than it was at the same time last year and is posting almost four times more job ads than Australia’s average. But just because mining companies are putting out thousands of ads and offering salaries paying well over $150,000 doesn’t mean Aussies are picking them up. Earlier this week, the CEO of WA’s Chamber of Minerals and Energy backed a migration agreement that would hopefully combat a severe skills shortage in the mining region of the Goldfields. If approved, the Designated Area Migration Agreement would allow overseas workers to be flown over to work in the mines and would make them exempt from the skilled migrants requirement. Chief executive Paul Everingham told the ABC there were more than 1000 vacancies in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining sector and said the region was at crisis point.  “You can’t sugar coat that — they’re available now and they’re not being filled, so however you can get them (workers),” Mr Everingham said. “All Australian companies want to employ Australians first, but if there aren’t enough Australians … we have got to remember there’s an infrastructure boom going on in NSW. “So if we have to set up special immigration or work zones, our members would definitely welcome the ability to get access to skilled workers immediately.” The WA mining industry is advertising for thousands of jobs ranging from cleaners to tradesmen to university-educated engineers. But following Mr Everidge’s comments, a number of people involved in the state’s mining industry have said more needs to be done to make relocating an attractive proposition. Despite the huge salaries fly-in fly-out workers earn, most complain of having no work-life balance. FIFO workers typically have higher rates of suicide, struggle with depression due to long hours and loneliness and report higher rates of workplace bullying and alcoholism. In 2015, the West Australian government conducted a 10-month investigation into the state’s FIFO workforce. Lifeline WA admitted in October last year it still had no idea exactly how many FIFO workers were affected by mental illness or how many had committed suicide while away from their families to work in the state’s mines. Even the report issued after the lengthy investigation admitted “the inquiry struck several problem areas in relation to statistics”. “Clear data was difficult to find in the areas of: a definitive total number of workers employed in the Western Australia resources industry on a FIFO #Thousands, #mining, #jobs, #waiting, #WesternAustralia, #Aussies, #don’t, #want, #them #miningindustry, #mentalillness, #mentalhealth, #workersdying, #miningindustryaccounts, #flyinflyoutworkers, #Australiangovernment, #miningsector, #resourcesindustry, #Australiancompanies, #parttimework, #miningcompanies, #miningregion, #mentalhealthissues, #migrationagreement, #skilledmigrantsrequirement, #Companiestalk, #miningjobs, #worklifebalance, #suicidestatistics, #prevalencerate, #suiciderates, #crisispoint, #energysector, #productionsites, #skillsshortage, #problemareas, #WesternAustralia, #Australia, #AustraliaandNewZealand, #Oceania, #Queensland, #UniversityofWesternAustralia, #AustralianBureauofStatistics, #CommunityServices, #MentalHealthCommission, #ChamberofMineralsandEnergy, #PeterMiller, #PaulEveringham, #NatalieWolfe

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) launches Aboriginal cultural and historical research
PERTH, 26 August 2014: A team of Aboriginal elders, anthropologists and archaeologists this week commenced important Aboriginal cultural and historical research in the Pilbara on the first expedition of a $3 million, three-year initiative sponsored by Fortescue Metals Group. The Gamburlarna Project is an initiative of Fortescue and the Wirlu-Murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation (WMYAC), which is a representative of the traditional owners of the land where Fortescue’s Solomon mine operates, the Yindjibarndi People. The project recognises the deep relationship between Fortescue and the WMYAC, and the cooperative approach that has developed between the two parties in the identification, recording and protection of important Yindjibarndi cultural heritage. The first stage of the Project will record the important cultural heritage of the Yindjibarndi people. The project will create an innovative, interactive map of Aboriginal heritage sites which will use photo and video to bring Yindjibarndi country together with traditional stories, songs, ceremonies, and knowledge, preserving it for future generations. This week’s seven-day expedition is to Satellite Springs, an important cultural area to both Yindjibarndi and Eastern Guruma People, located about 60 kilometres north of Tom Price within the vicinity of Fortescue’s Solomon mining hub. It is the first of many trips planned as part of the Gamburlarna Project. The Project is comprised of a number of parts, including: a cultural mapping and research program; a land management program; a social enterprises program focusing on the Roebourne Community; and an organisational capacity-building program. Fortescue chief executive officer Nev Power said the project recognised Fortescue’s commitment to the identification and protection of Aboriginal heritage and would help Fortescue protect important Yindjibarndi culture. “Fortescue has always been committed to working with the traditional owners of the land where we operate. That is why we are proud to partner with the Wirlu-murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation in this important initiative to record and promote the culture and history of the Yindjibarndi people,” Mr Power said. “This three-year project will increase our shared knowledge of Aboriginal culture and lead to a richer understanding of Australia’s first people which is a very positive outcome.” Wirlu-murra director Allery Sandy said the initiative was of great importance to the Yindjibarndi people. “Our culture has been kept alive for centuries through the telling of stories, but this will go beyond storytelling and archive valuable information to be used by generations to come,” Mrs Sandy said. Gamburlana is the Yindjibarndi name for a significant geographical feature on Yindjibarndi traditional lands.

Over the course of October 2014, 21 groups of Fortescue volunteers have prepared and plated more than 1000 individual meals, as well as cleaning up and providing entertainment for the guests. Themed nights included Pirate night, Bavarian night, Mexican and Italian. The entertainment has ranged from free massages for tired parents, to face painting, gingerbread man making and South American samba drums.
Bingham Canyon Mine
Video By Adam Taggart: I visted the Bingham Canyon Mine in 2011 and took this video. It should help give you an appreciation of the scale of operations there: Note the large number of ore-carrying trucks rambling everywhere. They were tirelessly parading by the entire time I was at the mine, which by the way was on Easter Sunday (how much busier was the mine on non-holiday weekdays?) And while they look small in the video compared to the size of the mining pit, these trucks are HUGE! He's a picture of my daugthers standing next to one of the truck tires: http://www.peakprosperity.com/sites/default/files/users/u14865/large_bingham-canyon-tire.jpg In addition to the huge dimensions of the pit, I was struck by how much energy was being consumed before my eyes. Not just by the trucks and the diggers, but in the refining process, as well. The ore being mined looks like simple rocks, the copper and other metals within in the ore are in such trace amounts that you can't see them visibily. A tremendous amount of energy is expended to coax out and separate the desired metals in commercial form. View the Article: Unintended Consequences Are Increasing World Demand for Gold http://www.peakprosperity.com/blog/81553/unintended-consequences-increasing-world-demand-gold What I take from this is that it's going to take a LOT of additional energy to get to the remaining ore now buried under the landslide. The stoppage in production at Bingham Canyon, plus the incremental energy now needed, can only put upwards pressure on the price of domestic silver.

Watervale Shopping Centre Construction Update May 2010
Civil works continue onsite...with everything going pretty much to plan. We did incur some floating boulders not far underground...but nothing today's machinery couldn't handle. It's amazing how quickly we can work through them -- Fred Flintstone would be proud! We are in the process of laying in-ground services and pouring concrete footings for the building's structure. The next milestone will be the erection of our pre-cast concrete walls which will start in early May. And the leasing is going just as well (if not better) than construction. Interest in the area's newest shopping centre has been very strong. Already we have 7 shops committed (subject to formal lease documentation). Not to mention having Woolworths as our Anchor tenant. Opportunities still exist for a wide range of uses, including optometry, hair & beauty, travel, fashion and real estate. If your ready to take your business to the next level then there's no harm in contacting one of our leasing agents to find out what Watervale Shopping Centre can do for you. www.ShopAtWatervale.com.au

http://www.occupational-safety.com.au/ SWMS: preparing workers when it comes to safe work methods A Safe Work Method Statement also known as SWMS is a document that contains stringently executed requirements with regards to how certain activities can be performed safely and also successfully. This particular document was created for jobs or activities that are recognized as "high-risk" or perhaps unsafe. Safe Work Method Statements explains in greater detail just how hazards in the workplace must be handled or perhaps taken care of. Firms as well as company owners are encouraged to make a Method Statement before permitting their own employees execute dangerous jobs. Safe Work Method Statements are frequently prepared immediately after conducting a Job Safety Analysis or perhaps JSA. The JSA is responsible for examining the parts of each and every process inside the company and distinguishing the possible risks as well as control measures for each part of the job. Apart from the actual job or even activity, a JSA likewise examines people who're assigned to perform the job. The JSA notes just how the individual carries out the duties that are assigned to him/her. The JSA records all possible hazards and also put the decent risk control measures in place to handle any blunders on the operations. After completing all of these, a full risk examination is essential. The information collected coming from the JSA is going to be used to create the company's Safe Work Method Statement or perhaps SWMS. It is necessary to make a Method Statement which workers need to follow before performing any job. When all safe work methods have already been explained as well as outlined within the Method Statement it is automatically understood that everyone inside the business-employers and employees-fully understand the dangers and problems concerned before performing a certain process. You need to add the following details when generating a Safe Work Method Statement: * The name of the individual assigned to the task, his / her qualifications and courses which individuals designated to a task should be provided with. * List of products that is needed to complete the job. This furthermore pinpoints the assessments which have been done or is going to be performed at work. * Outline of every activity that is to be performed. The possible risks that is linked to a specific stage of the task. The step-by-step processes for performing each and every task. The safety procedures that should be implemented in order to manage the hazards. Safety measures that ought to be applied in order to safeguard one's safety and health. Last but not the least; this also contains the identification of rules and regulations as well as codes of people who are concerned. The Safe Work Method Statement or perhaps SWMS is actually a legal document which businesses and personnel should value highly because it can encourage safety in the workplace as well as consistent flow of business operations. It's very important for businesses to be prepared with a safety management system prior to they allow their own employees do high-risk jobs. This will lessen the number of accidental injuries at work and also safeguard a company from legal issues in the foreseeable future. A Safe Work Method Statement or SWMS needs to be organized using clear language. It must be brief as well as to the point to make sure that even staff having lower reading and writing levels can comprehend and recall what was pointed out in the document.

S&P's 500 and Nasdaq both gained more than 4.5 per cent for the week. The Australian market closed slightly lower on Friday as investors remained cautious to the US corporate results. Uncertainty may continue to weigh on the local market as more major US companies are scheduled to release their earnings this week. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index Friday dropped 15.7 points, or 0.33 per cent, to 4752.9. For the week, the ASX200 rose 3.3 per cent. The broader All Ordinaries index lost 8.8 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 4754.5 on Friday. Key Economic Facts and Figures Australia's major banks have tipped that they will increase mortgage rates by more than the official Reserve Bank rises in the coming months because they are facing higher costs of raising money in the wholesale markets. But Treasurer Wayne Swan says the big four banks cannot justify raising interest rates by more than the Reserve Bank of Australia's 25-basis-point increase. Today the Australian Bureau of Statistics will release lending finance data for August. M&A News Felix Resources (ASX:FLX) said China's Yanzhou Coal Mining (SHA:600188) today will resubmit the application for its A$3.54 billion bid for Felix to Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) for a second time. Yanzhou withdrew and resubmitted its application for the first time last month. Mirvac Group (ASX:MGR) has entered into a Merger Implementation Deed with Mirvac Real Estate Investment Trust (ASX:MRZ) in relation to a A$256 million offer to acquire all the issued units in MRZ. Mirvac Group's offer is proposed to be implemented by way of a trust scheme, valuing the trust units at 54 cents. Mirvac currently owns 24.6 per cent of MRZ. Important Corporate News Toll road operator Transurban (ASX:TCL) has posted toll revenue of growth of A$206.9 million for the September quarter, an increase of 6.8 per cent on the prior corresponding quarter. All Australian assets reported traffic growth for the quarter. Toll revenue growth exceeded traffic growth on six out of seven roads. Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG) says its September quarter production exceeded guidance by 9 per cent and reiterated its forecasts for the December quarter. The group also plans to spend A$360 million to fast-track the development of its Christmas Creek mine, which would increase its total annual iron ore production to about 55 million metric tonnes. Lend Lease (ASX:LLC) plans to become a stapled entity on ASX. This will be achieved by distributing units in a newly created trust, Lend Lease Trust to shareholders on a 1:1 basis and stapling each unit and share together to form a stapled security. Office service firm Servcorp Limited (ASX:SRV) plans to sell new shares to institutions and retail investors to raise A$80 million to fund its growth and take advantage of depressed prices for real estate. The company will raise A$51 million from an institutional placement and A$29 million from a one-for-11 accelerated non-renounceable entitlement offer. Seven Network (ASX:SEV) says its holding in James Packer's Consolidated Media Holdings (ASX:CMJ) has risen to 20.96 per cent after an on-market share buyback by ConsMedia reduced the number of shares on issue. Meridian Minerals Limtied (ASX:MII) said the FIRB has approved the investment of A$10.5 million into Meridian by Chinese company Northwest Mining and Geology Group Co. Ltd for Nonferrous Metals (NWME). NWME will subscribe to Meridian shares in a placement at a share price of A$0.08
