Job Skills: Prepare your English CV for a job in the UK

22:13
Moving to or living in the UK? Looking to apply for work? You will need to prepare your British English CV. A CV is also known as a resume. Did you know that in the UK, we have our own way of making CVs that is different from what is commonly done in other European countries? A British CV is closer in format and structure to an American CV. In this lesson, you will learn what to include and what not to include in your curriculum vitae. Also, I will teach you some impressive vocabulary and phrases for your CV that will help you land that interview and achieve your goals. It's not easy to find employment, but with the right skills, you have a better chance of getting the job you want! Take a quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/job-skills-uk-cv/ TRANSCRIPT Hello, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is your British English CV. Maybe you want to put together your first British English CV to apply for jobs in the UK. So in this video, I'm going to tell you what's standard, and I'll tell you a little bit about it, so that you can create your first or an improved British English CV. So what we're going to talk about first is the format of your CV. Because we... There's not like one CV that's... Everybody does. There are conventions, there are set ways of doing it, but within that, there is some leeway; you can do different things. And this is important when we think about format, because it really depends what experience you have, which format you're going to choose, because you want to use your CV to sell yourself. So if you've got a lot of experience behind you, then you want to do a chronological CV, with your most recent job and then going backwards. We usually have the most detail... Or no, we do. We have the most detail for the most recent or current job, and then after that, the previous job, some detail as well. But generally after that, we don't really say much about the jobs that far in the past. And that's the key difference that I've seen on many CVs when I'm looking at CVs from people from Italy or Spain or wherever. They usually have a lot of detail for past jobs that were quite a long time ago, whereas we don't really say so much about things that were in the past, especially if they were more than two years ago. Yeah. What if you don't really have much experience, well what do you do then? Well, you put your education in the first position. So, you would want to put your education first. In the experience CV, the education isn't the most important thing; that can go at the end or on the second page. And what if you're a freelance worker or a temporary worker? So, you've got lots of little jobs, what do you do then? Well, you choose a format where you're grouping your experience in most important projects that you did. It's not really about the time that you worked on something; it's about the skills that you acquired. So in this kind of CV, you really need to express all your skills, not how long it was, how long you were there, and this kind of thing like in a normal job. What not to include, then, on your British English CV? I think there's a difference between what's the law about what not to include and what's the actual practice. Because by law, we're not meant to put our date of births or photographs on CVs. But, it's, it does happen for certain kinds of jobs. Let's take this example: you move to London, and you're trying to get a job in London, and you want to do a waitressing job or a bar job, or something like that. If you go into independent places, independent places and maybe not like... Maybe they don't really know about the law, and actually they do want to know how old you are. So, in... I'm not telling you to do it, I'm just saying that it happens that some people choose to put this information on their CVs. I, this is a just a personal thing of mine: on a CV, I just find it completely pointless that somebody puts headings like "email" and then puts an email address after it with a name in it, because it's obviously your email. It's like a word that we don't need. We don't need to see that on the CV. Same with "mobile". We know what a mobile number looks like. So pointless headings I don't like, and also, I don't like the title at the top, when somebody writes "CV" or "Curriculum Vitae" which is a Latin word, because we obviously know it's a CV. So, I'm against pointless extra words on CVs.

10 Tips for Writing an Effective Statement of Purpose

07:24
Getting ready to apply to grad school? Watch this video for expert tips on creating a powerful statement of purpose. Here Debby Bacharach, writer and tutor of DebbyBacharach.com, revisits her popular tips for writing a statement of purpose, which she previously shared as part of a Navigating Grad School as a Working Professional event hosted by UW Professional & Continuing Education. http://www.keeplearning.uw.edu 10 Tips for Writing an Effective Statement of Purpose 1. Put your face on the page. 2. Don't panic -- brainstorm. 3. Get another perspective. 4. Let it all flow and edit later. 5. Keep your writing lively. 6. Make it clear you've done your homework. 7. Show you care. 8. Answer every part of every question. 9. Make sure your essay reflects your work. 10. Give yourself time. Video Transcript: I’m Debbie Backrack, I’ve been a college writing instructor for over 25 years. And I’ve helped hundreds of people write their statements of purpose successfully. I’ve also been on the other side of the desk and I’ve read these statements for admissions committees. I have a good sense of what people are looking for and how to get started with it and how to do this successfully. The main goal of the statement is to make all these numbers about your, your transcripts, your GRE scores, take all these numbers and make them come alive, make you alive as a person. We call this putting your face on the page. You’re here because you did not take a direct route to grad school and admissions is excited about that. They want to know about that, maybe you were a cook in Alaska and from talking to people you decided “oh I wanted to be a social worker”, or maybe you’ve been a midwife your whole career and you realized there’s not enough research to support how you want to help your client and you decided to become an epidemiologist so that you can create that research. These are the “ah moments” they are looking for, when did you get inspired, what excited you about coming into their program? That’s what they’re looking for. So here’s how not to get started: don’t put the question in front of you and stare and stare and panic and look at your watch, and go” it’s due in three”, don’t do that to yourself. Many of us have done it but I want to give you 2 ways you can avoid that. Number one: think about categories, jobs you’ve had, skills you have, awards you’ve won, 10 things that related to this career you’re thinking about that you think really would really fit. 10 things from your life that have nothing to do with this potential career and make all these categories and just fill them in, fill them in with whatever you think of including things that are probably bad ideas and won’t come into your essay but just give it to yourself. And then let it sit a little bit and have a friend come and look at it with you and pick out what might help tell your story and focus who you are. Because you are often can’t see what in your own story might help tell it. So I have a personal example of this; I was writing an essay about failure and I’ve thought about times I’ve failed, a job I didn’t get, an award I didn’t get, and a friend of mine said “oh how do you cope with all that failure?” I thought “what are you talking about” but I’m at poet and I send out hundreds and hundreds of poems all year and maybe I get 3 accepted. And she was just amazed that I wasn’t distressed by this. I thought “oh I don’t think of that as failure” that’s interesting, that makes for a much more interesting essay and a new focus on it that I wouldn’t have thought of myself. So bring someone in to help you figure that out. I also recommend free writing and this is a technique where you have to ask your personal editor you know the one that tells you that’s a stupid idea, you spelled that wrong, you’re never gonna get into grad school- that person. Tell them to go you know take a break, take a cup of coffee, they’ll get a chance to proof read but not right now. And then you sit down and you set a timer for maybe ten minutes and you write. And you just write and write and you just whatever comes whatever connecting ideas that you didn’t think of you just let it all flow. You’re kind of tapping into your subconscious a little bit and what happens is images you didn’t think would come, there’s a lot of power in your writing that wasn’t there before. Again, this is not your final draft, I understand you are writing a professional document but this is a way to get moving with it...

IOHK presents at Oxford University: Ouroboros: A Provably Secure Proof-of-Stake Blockchain Protocol

57:30
On the Ouroboros Design: How rigour and engineering are essential for critical infrastructure, read the latest IOHK blog now: https://iohk.io/blog/on-the-ouroboros-design-how-rigour-and-engineering-are-essential-for-critical-infrastructure/ https://iohk.io/research/papers/a-provably-secure-proof-of-stake-blockchain-protocol/ Mathematicians with a curiosity about the algorithms behind blockchain came to hear Aggelos Kiayias speak at Oxford university’s Mathematical Institute on Wednesday. Professor Kiayias, Chief Scientist at IOHK, had been invited to the university to give a talk on his work on Ouroboros, a provably secure Proof-of-Stake algorithm for blockchain. It the first time such a cryptographic protocol has been devised and is significant because its use would enable blockchains to process many more transactions, giving the technology the muscle that would scale it up for far wider use than at present. “Bitcoin is slow,” he said in the presentation, in an outline of the problem. “The transactions per second of Visa are in the order of many thousands, for Paypal in the order of hundreds, and Bitcoin is far less than that – clearly that’s something that can’t scale to a global level.” In addition to the much greater efficiency of Ouroboros, Prof Kiayias explained a novel reward mechanism for incentivising the protocol and used game theory to show why attacks such as selfish mining and block withholding would be neutralised. A Nash equilibrium is a prescription of a strategy for each rational player, with the property that if other players follow it, it does not make sense for a rational player to deviate from it. Prof Kiayias described how Ouroboros can be proven to be an approximate Nash equilibrium, thus distinguishing this blockchain system from Bitcoin, which is known to be not incentive compatible. The Ouroboros paper was first published last December with Alexander Russel, Bernardo David and Roman Oliynykov and Prof Kiayias presented the work at the Alan Turing Institute in London last year. Bernardo David on PoS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5sCsPerCiQ Bernardo David presenting PoS in detail at IOHK's Tokyo tech lab: https://youtu.be/hMgxZOsTlQc Among the audience was Hayyu Imanda, whose desire to specialise in cryptography for her PhD studies brought her to hear the presentation. The 22-year-old is currently in a class of 26 students at Oxford university studying for an MSc in Mathematics and Foundations of Computer Science. “I come from a pure maths background and I find cryptography very interesting, in that it was relatively recently founded and there is so much research happening,” she says. “I see it as a bridge from pure maths into real life, with many uses in terms of security, and it’s going to be a growing field.” More images from the event here: https://iohk.io/blog/a-proof-of-stake-lecture-at-oxford-university/ -- https://iohk.io/team/aggelos-kiayias/ Prof Aggelos Kiayias is the Chair in Cyber Security and Privacy at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests are in computer security, information security, applied cryptography and foundations of cryptography with a particular emphasis in blockchain technologies and distributed systems, e-voting and secure multiparty protocols as well as privacy and identity management. He joins IOHK as chief scientist through a long-term consulting agreement between IOHK and the University of Edinburgh, UK, where he is based and continues to do research and teach courses in cyber security and cryptography. Prof Kiayias is also Professor in Residence (gratis) at the University of Connecticut, USA, and Associate Professor of Cryptography and Security (on leave) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. Prof Kiayias’s cyber security research over the years has been funded by the Horizon 2020 programme (EU), the European Research Council (EU), the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (Greece), the National Science Foundation (USA), the Department of Homeland Security (USA), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA). He has received an ERC Starting Grant, a Marie Curie fellowship, an NSF Career Award, and a Fulbright Fellowship. He holds a Ph.D. from the City University of New York and he is a graduate of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Athens. He has more than 100 publications in journals and conference proceedings in the area. He currently serves as the program chair of the Financial Cryptography and Data Security 2017 conference. -- Input Output See more at: https://iohk.io Get our latest news updates: https://iohk.io/blog/ Meet the team: https://iohk.io/team/ Learn about our projects: https://iohk.io/projects/cardano/ Read our papers: http://iohk.link/paper-ouroboros Visit our library: https://iohk.io/research/library/ In the press: https://iohk.io/press/ Work with us: https://iohk.io/careers/
