Examining the Dangers of Common Core with Dr. Duke Pesta

Parents around the nation are upset at Common Core practices in schools. They claim the system does not allow schools, or students, to properly test students. Proponents of Common Core teaching say the system provides schools with a consistent learning path. Supporters claim teachers and students have a clear idea of what is to be taught, and learned, in different subjects. Many critics of this style of teaching say the curriculum discourages diversity. So far, 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the standards. When the curriculum was first developed, many conservatives felt it represented a federal takeover of education. The Obama Administration strongly supports the ideals of Common Core. Now, opposition is brewing to the standards from liberal groups. Doctor Duke Pesta is a English professor from the University of Wisconsin. He is also one of the leading voices in the country, speaking out against the Common Core Curriculum. Pesta is our guest on the show today. He is here to talk about the standards, as well as some of the problems with Common Core education. In this second of three segments, Dr. Anthony Marchese of ICF International interviews Dr. Michael Martirano, State Superintendent of Schools in West Virginia about the WV Next Generation Standards- also known as the Common Core. Background Information: The Common Core What is it? Where did it come from? Why is it controversial? 1. It’s common knowledge that there is much opposition among the WV citizenry to the Common Core standards. What are your plans to convince WV citizens that adopting the standards is a wise decision? 2. Research clearly indicates that significant improvement in schooling that is offered for kids is most successful at the level of the local school. How will adoption of the Common Core Standards contribute to improvement at the local level? 3. Do you have any special plans for doing staff development for local school principals who will have to lead the teaching staff in adopting and applying the Common Core standards? 4. Do you think the teachers of West Virginia are equipped at this time to implement the Common Core Standards in the state’s curriculum? If not, what do you plan to do? 5. Can you clarify the difference between the Standards and what actually gets taught in classrooms (ie., curriculum)? How is curriculum selected/designed, and by whom? (I think this is the key issue; people see math problems on Facebook that they don’t understand and think that THAT’S the Common Core.) 6. How are the Common Core State Standards different from WV’s previous standards? 7. What are the key arguments against the Common Core State Standards, and how would you address them? 8. If WV steps back from implementing the Standards, what will take their place? And what will the state lose if we step back from implementing them?
