Bitcoin This week: CFTC Subpoenas Major Crypto Exchanges, Bitcoin Prices And More Subscribe: http://bit.ly/CryptoCoinNewsYT Bitcoin Developers Propose New Protocol For Mining Matt Corallo, one of the developers of Bitcoin Core, has published an early proposal to improve the Bitcoin network (BIP), by decentralizing Bitcoin mining through the adoption of a new protocol. The BetterHash Mining Protocol(s) was published on Github, addressing a lot of current concerns affecting the Bitcoin Network with regards to becoming more centralized for mining. At the moment the most used protocol is Stratum, but the design lacks major components such as those related to mining pools, which limit the diversity of blocks. According to Corallo, this allows mining pools and their operators to have a wrongful influence in the Network’s updates and affect the resistance to censorship of Bitcoin. For this reason the developer wants to replace Stratum with a new protocol that divides the construction of blocks and the execution of payments into two protocols known as Work and Pool. Steve Wozniak Claims Bitcoin Should Be The Currency Of The Internet Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, has commented on his hopes that Bitcoin will become the native currency of the Internet. His comments followed those of Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square, on the future of Bitcoin. Although Wozniak was not sure that this would ever become a reality, he seemed truly hopeful during the Money 20/20 Conference in Amsterdam. Wozniak, who has previously shown his support for cryptocurrencies in general, and Ethereum in particular; supports the technological development of the entire market, despite not being an investor himself. Furthermore, Wozniak claimed that only Bitcoin (BTC) represented true digital gold and was decentralized. CFTC Subpoena Bitstamp, Coinbase, Itbit And Kraken The United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has subpoenaed major crypto exchanges Bitstamp, Coinbase, Itbit and Kraken, as part of the existing investigation into the price manipulation of Bitcoin (BTC). According to reports, the CFTC’s investigation was motivated by the lack of response to a request sent by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) to the crypto exchanges, requesting information regarding specific times of trading activity, with which the exchanges declined to comply, only submitting a few hours worth of data. The CME began selling Bitcoin futures in December 2018 and made the requests for data in January of this year after the first futures contracts settled. The CFTC has jurisdiction over the matter, given that Bitcoin (BTC) has been designated as a commodity. According to Jesse Powell, CEO of Kraken, the subpoena represents a “newly declared oversight” of how BTC prices form futures prices and has “the spot exchanges questioning the value and cost of their index participation.” Coinrail Suffers A $40 Million Hack Coinrail, a South Korean crypto exchange, has informed its users that it has suffered a hack to the value of approximately $40 million. The exchange suspended its services as soon as the hack was noticed by the team, who have conducted a system maintenance. The “cyber intrusion” resulted in ERC‌-20 based token being stolen from the platform, these included the NPXS token from the Pundi X project, ATC from Aston and NPER project's token. Following the hack, Coinrail alerted users to the address associated with the hacking episode, Fake_Phishing1432, which has apparently tried to sell over 26 million of NPXS tokens on IDEX. According to Coinrail and Pundi X, IDEX has frozen the assets sent from the address, and the NPXS tokens are not liquidated. As for the other stolen tokens, it appears that they have been sent for trading to EtherDelta, another decentralized cryptocurrency exchange. The hacking episode seems to have compromised over 30% of Coinrail’s reserves, although they claim that most of the tokens are currently frozen. As for the remaining 70%, Coinrail assures its users that the reserves are safe and that they have been moved to a cold wallet which is not accessible through the internet. Bitcoin Prices Crumble Although Bitcoin (BTC) had a somewhat stable week, it closed down about $1,000 from its previous value. It started the week at $7,600 only to drop slightly on Tuesday, where it held until Thursday, when prices went back up to the $7,700 mark. By Friday, Bitcoin was at the $7,600 mark, but experienced a massive loss on Sunday, reaching its lowest point of $6,800. Prices were most likely affected by the ongoing investigation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission into price manipulation in the Bitcoin market. Comments made by Jay Clayton, the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, with regards to the classification of almost all ICO’s as securities, may have also played a part in the sudden drop in prices. Although the major detonator is without doubt Coinrail's hacking episode.

Bitcoin: Privacy and Censorship Resistance Beyond the Web - Matt Corallo

01:27:44
Matt Corallo - Bitcoin: Privacy and Censorship Resistance Beyond the Web In much of the western world, governments have developed the ability to prevent individuals or organizations from accessing financial services, with little or no court oversight or ability of those being marginalized to challenge the rulings. Under the guise of “terrorism” and "protecting reputations", individuals and organizations, from porn stars, to advocates for those illegally detained in Guantanamo Bay have found themselves unable to hold bank accounts, unable to accept payments online, or even had their funds seized without warning by both private and government actions. In the developing world, the situation can be just as, if not more, extreme. In the mean time, Bitcoin has been slowly shedding its anarchistic and anti-establishment origins and finding places where it can provide legitimate value within the current financial world. In this talk, we'll cover both how Bitcoin is in a unique position to provide activists and marginalized groups access to financial systems to ensure they can continue their work, while still meeting requirements placed on the financial system for reasonable law enforcement purposes. We'll touch on a few cryptographic primitives which, when combined with Bitcoin, can create incredibly practical and powerful tools to comply with regulation without giving up privacy, and of course cover a few common misconceptions about Bitcoin.

Andreas Antonopoulos, Matt Corallo, Greg Maxwell, Michael Perklin, Gavin Andresen. Andreas M. Antonopoulos is a technologist and serial entrepreneur who has become one of the most well-known and well-respected figures in bitcoin. He is the author of “Mastering Bitcoin”, published by O’Reilly Media and considered by many to be the best technical guide to bitcoin. As an engaging public speaker, teacher and writer, Andreas makes complex subjects accessible and easy to understand. As an advisor, he helps startups recognize, evaluate, and navigate security and business risks. As a bitcoin entrepreneur, Andreas has founded a number of bitcoin businesses and launched several community open-source projects. He is a widely published author of articles and blog posts on bitcoin, is a permanent host on the popular Let’s Talk Bitcoin Podcast, and a frequent speaker at technology and security conferences worldwide. Matt Corallo is a long-time Bitcoin developer who has been working on pioneering sidechain and Bitcoin extensibility technology since its inception. He has actively contributed to Bitcoin Core and its testing infrastructure, and to BitcoinJ, a Java implementation mainly focussed on lightweight applications. He moonlights as a Whisper Systems developer and researches secure hardware. Greg Maxwell was one of the key architects of the two-way peg which makes sidechains possible. He has been a Bitcoin core developer since 2011, and is one of the most active reviewers of cryptographic protocol proposals in the Bitcoin industrial ecosystem. He has contributed to many widely-used techniques in the Bitcoin space, such as the homomorphic key derivation used in BIP32 and trustless privacy-preserving techniques such as CoinJoin and blinded proof of solvency. Greg is a long-time free software developer and comes to Blockstream from Mozilla where he contributed to the Daala video compression project and coauthored the Opus audio codec (RFC 6716). He also has over 15 years of experience developing, implementing and operating embedded systems and protocols for large-scale networking. For many in the Bitcoin community, Greg is likely the person telling you that your protocol is broken and why, but he usually feels pretty bad about it. Michael Perklin is the president of C4, a non-profit standards organization dedicated to developing and maintaining standards that assist organizations in using blockchain technology such as Bitcoin. Through C4, Michael co-authored the industry's first security standard - the CryptoCurrency Security Standard - which is being adopted by companies and organizations throughout the industry as the gold standard for implementing and auditing proper security for cryptocurrencies like bit coin.

Bitcoin Q&A: How is fungibility tied to privacy?

07:34
Fungibility is simply that it doesn't matter where any given unit of currency came from; one unit is worth as much as any other unit. For example, it doesn't matter, upon presentation, the euro you hold was stolen two transactions ago. No one can say "I will take that euro but not that euro." This was settled as a matter of law in the 16th century. The reason we have fungibility is because otherwise the currency wouldn't work; if every time you received a euro, you had to open a database and check the provenance, currency wouldn't work. Not just because you would have to track a database that was perfect and always updated, but because no euro would be worth one euro. Every euro would be weighted by how liquid it is, whether you can use it and it will be accepted. Fungibility is understanding by law, practice, and technology that every unit is treated as indistinguishable. Bitcoin is somewhat fungible. You can trace the provenance of every coin; by custom we don't do that but we are beginning to see some companies do it, which is a problem. If accounts start being frozen because of where bitcoins came from three transactions ago, that's a problem. Fungibility is tied to privacy and anonymity. There are systems being made where you can't tell the amount being transacted, who the sender and receiver are. Banning technology, especially open-source technology, because criminals use it only usually affects the people who aren't criminals: the innocent and the idiots. People should be able to protect their money from predators, from corporations, from tyrannical governments. Flipside Bits: What The %#(& Happened To Bitcoin in 2014

Tips: 16c5cwpDkwvguE48sQCtBUsx6cFfdJ65Pc Twitter: https://twitter.com/djbooth007/ Episode 13: A recent article boldly claiming that bitcoin was the worst investment focuses on the price decline of over 50% in the 12 months of 2014, however if we take an 18 month view we can say the price has tripled. The declining price in 2014 didnt stop $315 million worth of venture capital investment being thrown into blockchain-related startups. Bitcoin miners began 2014 with a network hashrate of 11 Petahash/sec and ended the year with around 300 Petahash/sec. 2014 also began with the first major retailer, Overstock.com announcing they will accept bitcoin, leading to many other big names following suit. The biggest story of 2014 began in February when it was anticipated that the bitcoin exchange MT Gox was insolvent. Japanese police suggested that just 1% of the loss was due to a hack and the rest was probably an inside job where over 650,000 bitcoins disappeared. In March of 2014, tabloid magazine Newsweek wrongly claimed to have unmasked bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. In June 2014, the USA became the first government in the world to sell bitcoins to their citizens. In July of 2014, New York's egotistical Department of Financial Services Released the Proposed Bitlicense Regulatory Framework. In December 2014, Charlie Shrem was sentenced to spend 2 years in jail for allegedly selling bitcoin to a customer of the Silk Road. Well, that's it. Keep the fun hashing through the blockchain. Slides are here: http://goo.gl/qcliQ0 This developer centered course will be a deep exploration of the evolution of the cryptographic primitives underlying the bitcoin protocol. Symmetric and public-key ciphers, as well as elliptic curve signatures and cryptographic hash functions will be covered, as well as how it all ties together to form the basis of bitcoin. This is part 1 of a larger series of lectures for developers and researchers who want a thorough understanding of how bitcoin functions, and its potentials and risks. Part 2 will extend these cryptographic fundamentals to the specific implementation bitcoin uses, as well as a survey of other cryptographic primitives and mechanisms used in other currencies. The material in the cryptography I course on Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/course/cryptography) may be helpful to those who have less background in cryptography.

"Bitcoin Documentary Interviewing Early Blockchain Pioneers" - Ulterior States [2015]

52:55
Get 10% OFF your Bitmex trades for 6 months: http://bit.ly/2jnmR8s Ulterior States, is a short documentary about bitcoin and blockchain technology from 2015. The film features interviews with many of the people pioneering the blockchain and crypto scene including discussion of the bitcoin soft fork (@ 22:45) occurring Aug 1, 2017 with Bitcoin Cash (BCH). The participatory development, production and post ‘guerilla-film-making-methods’, bounced between (non-academic) literature research, video interviews and studio sessions. This investigative process allowed having real-life conversations with some thought leaders within the Bitcoin ecosystem. In an attempt to portray the community behind the message to adopt a network, being a one-man team allowed for easier access to the subjects. The enthusiasm and commitment that saturate through the lens in many parts of the film, expose how the adopters of Bitcoin want to explore, to probe and, to show the world, something important, otherwise overlooked. The film took three years and 125 videos to complete. Through this journey, I got immersed in the decentralised crypto-currency culture and met a bunch of wonderful futuristic-pirates, I would have never met otherwise. It is becoming easier to admit that Ulterior States is an expression of my perceptions, an extract of the years 2012-2015. The collaged story explores code as activism and discovers a melting pot through the neutrality of a decentralised consensus. It looks to the future from different humanist perspectives and argues that crypto-currencies could lead towards; community governed micro-state applications. A Film By Tomer Kantor - An IamSatoshi Production, Ulterior States was completely self-funded and produced as a final project for London South Bank University [MA - Arts & Humanity - Digital Film]. Featuring (alphabetically): Andreas Antonopoulos Julian Assange Jessi Baker Adam Cleary Matt Corallo Sven Desai Kyle Drake Stephen Early Mark Edge Chris Ellis Rick Falkvinge Paul Gordon Ian Grigg Vinay Gupta Jonathan Harrison Daniel Hassan Garrick Hileman Denis Jaromil Roio John Karanja Toni Lane Simon Lelieveldt Nadav Rosenberg Brett Scott Lui Smyth Elizabeth Starks Amir Taaki Robin Teigland Peter Todd Julia Tourianski Sveinn Valfells Erik Voorhees Cody Wilson ----- SUBS ENCOURAGE US! Support the show, consider donating: 16LVjxWGTbQuTV7Nxmpa1gCSfidbPpa71S (http://bit.ly/2me3j6i) With both the Bitcoin Unlimited and Segregated Witness efforts far from reaching majority support and exploding transaction fees, the debate around how to scale Bitcoin continues on. One of the key arguments against bigger blocks and Bitcoin Unlimited is that a blocksize restriction is needed to create a healthy fee market. Dr Peter Rizun has been researching the economics of transaction fees in Bitcoin extensively and joined us to discuss what dynamics affect fees and why he thinks the blocksize limit will eventually fall. Topics discussed in this episode: - Bitcoin seen through the eyes of a physicist - The dynamics that determine transaction fees in Bitcoin - How orphaning risks drive the fee market economics - The relationship between the block reward and the fee market - Why the blocksize limit will eventually fall - Why Peter supports Bitcoin Unlimited - The state of discussion between Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Unlimited Links mentioned in this episode: - Dr. Peter Rizun's talk at Scaling Bitcoin Montreal 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad0Pjj_ms2k - Dr. Peter Rizun: "A Transaction Fee Market Exists Without a Block Size Limit": https://www.bitcoinunlimited.info/resources/feemarket.pdf - XT Nodes - Bitcoin Hashrate Distribution: http://xtnodes.com/ - Bitco.in Forum: https://bitco.in/forum/ - Ledger - Peer-Reviewed Journal on Cryptocurrency and Blockchain: http://ledgerjournal.org/ojs/index.php/ledger Sponsors: - Jaxx: Wallets that Unify the Blockchain Experience Across Devices - http://jaxx.io - Ledger: Smart card security for your Bitcoins - Get 10% off your first order when you use the code EPICENTER - http://ledgerwallet.com This episode is also available on : - Epicenter.tv: https://epicenter.tv/172 - YouTube: http://youtu.be/2eaMVWUXW8U - Souncloud: http://soundcloud.com/epicenterbitcoin/eb-172 Watch or listen, Epicenter is available wherever you get your podcasts. EB65 – Adam Back & Greg Maxwell: Sidechains Unchained

Support the show, consider donating: 3JwpaKcFGsbS632fcwZWYUQubHQZ24brer (http://bit.ly/1zdmQCy) Backbone to the financial system? Powering decentralized technology? The first true world currency? There is probably who hasn’t dreamt of a world ten years from now when Bitcoin would be all those things. The promise of cryptocurrencies are enormous, but will Bitcoin really emerge as the winner? And how can we reconcile this grand vision for Bitcoin with an ecosystem where projects launch new coins and blockchains every day? The one project that rekindles those Bitcoin dreams and paints a potential path to Bitcoin’s ultimate success are sidechains. Developed by Adam Back, Greg Maxwell and several other Bitcoin core developers, sidechains aims to allow the permissionless, rapid innovation of alt chains, but using the established monetary base and network of Bitcoin. It’s a complex project, but with Blockstream founders and sidechains visionaries Adam Back and Greg Maxwell we couldn’t have had better companions on our journey into understanding the coming Bitcoin-Sidechains-Macrocosm. Topics included: - The motivation behind sidechains - The concept of digital scarcity - Concerns about the security of sidechains - Different stages of sidechains from federated pegs to merged mining to block extension Links mentioned in this episode: - Blockstream: http://www.blockstream.com/ - Sidechains white paper: http://www.blockstream.com/sidechains.pdf - Saving Bitcoin From Destruction: http://blog.bettercrypto.com/?p=1003 Sponsors: - ShapeShift: http://shapeshift.io Show notes: http://epicenterbitcoin.com/podcast/065 SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/epicenterbitcoin/eb-065 Epicenter Bitcoin is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain & Sébastien Couture. - Visit our website: http://epicenterbitcoin.com - Subscribe to our newsletter: http://epicenterbitcoin.com/newsletter - Twitter: http://twitter.com/epicenterbtc

34:45
BITCOIN RUSH The Open Minute Marathon Tx TaoOfSatoshi 26th Dec 2014 DRK 30:20 min Dash is DigitalCash Dash is a decentralized cryptographic currency that works similar to Bitcoin, but fixes many of Bitcoin's problems. Dash's InstantX technology makes transactions almost instant, meaning it is suitable for in-person trades and point-of-sale purchases. Not only that, but Dash is truly private, meaning that nobody can mine the blockchain to find details of your purchases or financial history. You wouldn't advertise your credit card statement--why advertise your crypto purchases? Dash is built from Bitcoin's core code, meaning that it remains compatible with systems that are already designed to work with Bitcoin. The creator of Dash, Evan Duffield, works with a "core team" of almost 20 people to continually improve the Dash code and ecosystem. Since Dash implemented its self-funding mechanism, a number of new developers have begun working on various aspects of the project as well, including retail point-of-sale and vending machine integration. Dash's masternodes enable investors to earn a 10+% annual return on investment while performing vital services for the network. Masternodes power both the privacy and instant transaction features of Dash. Not only that, but masternode owners are able to vote on which projects will receive Dash's monthly self-generated budget funding. Dash's budget system provides tens of thousands of dollars in recurring funds, every month, which masternode owners allocate to projects designed to improve the Dash ecosystem. https://www.dash.org
