Rich mining legacy is poisonous future in parts of South Africa - NEW DISCOVERY

04:07
Waste from South African mines dug more than a century ago, stretching along one of the world's largest gold deposits, has left communities exposed to radiation, contaminated dust and water that can contribute to life threatening health conditions like TB and cancer. "This Community has been exposed for decades, more than a decade to the dust fallout from the tailing storage facilities, the physical risks from open cast mining and blasting, as well as the staying on contaminated land. Some also grew their vegetables on contaminated soil. There is Radon exposure. There is both inhalation and ingestion of radioactive dust." ####Follow: News life hot ( https://goo.gl/OdRtaq )

World's Deepest Mine - Gold Alchemy

04:51
South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". We have travelled into space and looked deep into the universe's depths, but the world beneath our feet remains unexplored and unseen. Now, that's about to change. For the first time in one epic unbroken shot, we embark on an impossible mission - using spectacular computer generated imagery to smash through three thousand miles of solid rock, and venture from our world into the underworld and on to the core of the Earth itself. It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. Caught between two huge rock slabs, we watch as stress builds and then releases. It unleashes an earthquake and blasts us on towards rivers of molten rock, explosive volcanoes, tears in the Earth's crust and giant tornadoes of liquid metal. But for every danger, there are wonders beyond imagination. Four hundred feet below the surface, a three hundred million year old fossilized forest, with every leaf and every piece of bark perfectly preserved. At one thousand feet down we enter a cave of giant crystals, glistening in deadly 122 degree heat. More than two miles underground we find buried treasure - gold and gems. Deeper still there are valuable resources - salt, oil, coal and iron. And over one hundred miles down we see the sparkling beauty of diamonds. As we descend we piece together our planet's extraordinary story. We rewind time to discover how prehistoric forests became modern-day fuel. 1700 feet down a layer of rock reveals the extraordinary story of the dinosaurs' cataclysmic death. We watch stalactites form and gold grow before our eyes. The deeper we travel into the underworld the more we understand our world above the surface. A bigger picture takes shape - a cycle of destruction and creation, driven by the core that sustains our dynamic planet and makes the Earth the only planet with life in a seemingly lifeless universe. Until, finally, three thousand miles down, we reach the core. Inside it lie the secrets of life as we know it - the magnetic force field that protects life on Earth from the sun's deadly rays, the ancient heat source that keeps our planet alive. Down to the Earth's Core brings the latest science together with breathtaking computer generated imagery. The result is an unmissable journey into an extraordinary world - full of dangers, wonders and secrets. And it's all down there, beneath our feet, right now waiting to be discovered.

Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines

27:50
Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For similar stories see: Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines https://youtu.be/c7iv1fef6qo Zimbabwe's Blood Diamond Killing Fields https://youtu.be/k9Bk5VIhjiY The Children Risking Their Lives In Underwater Gold Mines https://youtu.be/P1L_pxYZVwE "We have a lot of requests from Europe because the Emeralds from Afghanistan are the best in the world", Raphael says. He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? UNIFIL and UNMAS hail partnership in de-mining in south Lebanon

01:28
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) today highlighted the achievements realized together in south Lebanon while vowing to continue the dangerous but life-saving undertaking of clearing landmines. In his remarks at a ceremony marking the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action in the UNIFIL Headquarters in Naqoura, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Michael Beary hailed mine action activities conducted jointly with UNMAS and Lebanon Mine Action Center (LMAC). He added that UNIFIL de-miners to date have cleared over 4,300 square metres of land and safely removed and destroyed 800 anti-personnel mines within its 1,060 square kilometre area of operation (AO) in south Lebanon. He also highlighted the benefits of the mine risk education given to over 1,500 children in the last year, saving lives and increasing the level of engagement between UNIFIL and the people of Lebanon. “These efforts conducted in partnership with our Lebanese colleagues is a demonstration of our commitment to creating a safer environment for the people of south Lebanon,” said Major General Beary. “Landmines and other explosive remnants of war not only endanger the lives of UNIFIL personnel, but also of local populations throughout the AO.” He especially praised the work done by UNIFIL’s core de-mining teams from Cambodia and China. “I wish to publicly acknowledge their professionalism and courage as they set about this work,” he said. Despite progress, the UNIFIL head added, there are approximately 1,000 minefields along the Blue Line. Some of them are located in close proximity to UN positions. He said the “insidious menace of landmines” should be addressed by continuing to work together. “It is a huge imperative for us to keep working to try an ensure that we make south Lebanon, and other parts of the world safer through the work of UNMAS and in this mission UNIFIL,” he added. Major General Beary also read out the message of UN Secretary-General António Guterres on this year’s International Mine Awareness Day, which is observed globally under the theme “Advancing Protection, Peace and Development.” On 8 December 2005, the UN General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Mine Awareness Day, calling on Member States to enhance national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat. Addressing today’s ceremony in Naqoura, UNMAS Acting Programme Manager for Lebanon, Sarah Holland, praised the partnership forged in south Lebanon with UNIFIL, LMAC and local community leaders in both clearing landmines and educating the communities. “As we commemorate Mine Awareness Day, we are proud of the achievements that we have realized together, and bravely acknowledge the task that lies before us,” she said. “Today, let us recommit ourselves to striving for peace and stability here in South Lebanon; and for an environment that is free of landmines and other explosive remnants of war.” At today’s event, UNMAS and UNIFIL de-miners also displayed a simulation of mine clearance activities involving robots and other de-mining equipment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Article: Tilak Pokharel Video camera & edit: Aoibheann O’Sullivan & Mohamad Hamze Music: Calling Instrumental by Dexter Britain Translators: Hanady Younes & Adib Al-Moussa Stills: Mohamad Hamze & Pascual Gorriz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Africa Gold Mining Could Decline Precipitately | Rick Rule

15:16
https://sdbullion.com http://www.silverdoctors.com/precious-metals-market-podcast/ Gold mining equities have been strong amid downward pressure in the precious metal markets. Hope regarding further mergers and acquisitions has had a positive effect on the miners. Political uncertainties in South Africa may have an impact on gold production there. If political uncertainties remain, Rule's suspicion is that gold production there will fall precipitately over the next five years. Issues in Mexico are concerning as well with regard to mining. However, Rule says this doesn’t mean people shouldn’t invest in miners there.

Garreg Boeth Lead mine in Wales, Wirral Caving Group (a bit shakey in parts)

05:35
A bit shakey in parts. A trip out with the Wirral Caving Group to Garreg Boeth Lead mine in Wales, this place has some of the loveliest mineral formations that I have ever seen. It is a little muddy and a bit wet but well worth the effort, we saw an old powder keg and and some of the most fantastic formations that I have ever seen, things like Crinoids and cave pearls and all sorts of calcite and flowstone pretties, I wished that I had taken a proper camera in the end but I am sure that I will be going back here. some info below taken from Flintshire county councils places website:- Workings remain as shafts and mounds to the south of the Hendre Valley and the A541 Road. The largest shafts occur in the Garreg-Boeth Woods and Big Wood at SJ18656760 and continue eastwards to SJ19156755. The Garreg-Boeth Vein was later developed by the South Halkyn and Rhydymwyn Mining Company when the Halkyn Deep Level Tunnel reached the sett in 1908. The Tyddyn-y-barcud Vein ran east to west to the north-west of Big Wood. Smith (1921) refers to seven shafts along the Tyddyn-y-barcud Vein as Robert's, Pritchard's, Eyton's, Williamson's, Marquis, Tyddyn-y-barcud and Ddol, being those that can be traced through the woodland.

The Most Depressing City On Earth

03:56
Just gonna do a little damage control here and add that the video is purely opinion. I did very little intense research, and depression is a mental illness not a characteristic of a city. I based my argument on some facts, but I'm sure you can argue that war torn cities like Damascus could be more 'depressing'. Sorry if the video came off as if I was spouting the gospel. If you think you have found a more depressing city, comment. Just do not comment Detroit. Please. Full Script: It was my goal when making this video to decide which city is the most depressing (which in this situation is a synonym for depressing). This is obviously just an opinion, but I did put some research into this and I think that my answer is very reasonable. Before we get into this, let’s take a look at the rules. I decided that a city cannot have fewer than 50,000 people I know that that isnt the official definition, but This takes a lot of remote settlements in places like Greenland out of the mix. I decided to look at what factors cause unhappiness. I found this list, and while some factors have no relation to geography, two do: Inability to sleep or excessive sleeping, and Social isolation. In order for a city to make it hard to sleep, it has to be very far north, or very far south. Cities inside the arctic circle experience the polar night, where the sun simply does not come up for days at a time. This has been known to cause insomnia. In order for a city to cause social isolation, it needs to have a hostile environment. Luckily, most cities in the Arctic Circle check that box. It also has to be isolated from other cities, and inaccessible. There are many scandinavian cities that have hostile environments, but these cities, such as Tromso (traum-suh) are tourist destinations and generally good places to live. They have high standards of living. Next, we have to turn to Russia. Two cities caught my eye immediately: the coal mining town of Vorkuta and remote port Murmansk. However, coal mining has become unprofitable in vorcuteuh, so people are moving out at alarming rates. Plus, just look at this picture and tell me that does not look jolly. And being a port city, Murmansk naturally has contact with new ideas and people. However, there is one city that I have left out. (Papers please theme) Norilsk. The Nickel mining city of 170 something thousand people is so hostile it seems like something out of 1984. No roads lead to Norilsk, and it is one of three large cities in the continuous permafrost zone that means that the land is unfarmable. There is one freight railway that leads to the city, but the only way out is an airport or a port 40 miles away that freezes over in the winter. Norilsk enters continuous darkness for 45 days each year, and when people leave the city, they say that they are going to “the mainland”. the polar night syndrome is common in residents, you can probably figure out why. It is also one of the most polluted cities on earth. Here’s a quick list of facts about norilsk’s pollution: 1 percent of global emissions of sulfur dioxide comes from Norilsk nickel mines . It is so polluted that some people mine the soil for soot because it contains precious minerals. In September 2016, the nearby river turned red. The life expectancy of a worker in Norilsk is 10 years lower. A study done by Boris Revich showed that blood illnesses were 44% higher, nervous system illnesses 38% higher, and bone and muscle system illnesses 28% higher among children in Norilsk WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER CHILDREN IN SIBERA. In any other city, people might protest these terrible, polluted conditions. But in Norilsk, the income for nearly everybody comes from one company: Norilsk Nickel. Any protestors would be fired, because even if you do not work in the mines, Norilsk Nickel also owns nearly all businesses in town. And the Russian Government has no plans to step in, because this company is a cash cow. Norilsk Nickel is 2% of the Russian GDP. In comparison, the entire city of San Francisco is 2% of the US GDP. The city has a depressing past as well: it was built by 500,000 gulag prisoners working under starving conditions throughout the month long days and nights. Of which eighteen thousand died. The most obvious relic of this era can be found all over the city: the stalinist, utilitarian architecture of nearly every building in the city. But hey, they painted the city bright colors so it can’t be that bad right?

How to Scrap old Cell Phones for *Gold Recovery

04:34
http://www.goldnscrap.com Short video showing how and what to scrap in old cell phones and prepare them for gold and other precious metals recovery. Also see the USGS pdf report "Recycled Cell Phones—A Treasure Trove of Valuable Metals" (2006): http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2006/3097/fs2006-3097.pdf But do not forget to adjust the prices to gold's current value. The report suggests an avarage gold content of 0.034g per cell phone: At 2005 - 0.034g was worth 0.4$ At todays prices (1700$ an ounce) - 0.034 is worth 1.85$ Will scrapping cell phones make you rich? probably not. But it will make you some extra cash. --------------------------------------------------------------------- I have made this short list for US citizens who wants to sell scrap electronics. Cherry Creek Mining Town | Historic Gold Mining Town | Nevada | USA

03:10
Cherry Creek is a historic mining town located in northern White Pine County, in northeastern Nevada in the western United States. It is a census county division (CCD), with a population at the 2010 census of 72. Since the 1940s, the community has slowly declined in size, although mine leaseholders have always been active in the district, and occasional mining activity has taken place. Total production for the district since 1872 has been estimated at roughly 20 million dollars. Throughout the 2000s, the "Barrel Saloon" a local business, remained open; however, it closed in July 2010. Many historic structures, including a museum, an early one-room schoolhouse, and the Cherry Creek Barrel Saloon, still stand among more modern buildings. 12 Most Radioactive Places on Earth

08:17
These are the top most most dangerous radiation hot spots in the world from nuclear weapons testing to power plant explosions! Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 6. Fort D’Aubervilliers Originally constructed as fortification to protect Paris from going under attack in 1846, it’s actually now one of the world's most radioactive places. It’s here where some of the first tests on radioactivity were conducted. Frederic and Irene Joliot-Curie both worked with salts of radium-226. People have noticed a large amount of cancer in the area especially in a school near the fort in 2002. High doses or radioactive contamination appeared to be the only plausible explanation and a study in 2006 confirmed the radioactivity. 5. McClure Radioactive Site A company looking to build some houses came across a startling discovery when surveying new land in Ontario Canada. The McClure site was contaminated with high amounts of radium from industrial use and a large amount of the soil as contaminated. They found out later that the plant in the area was put radioactive scrap metal in the ground for experimental purposes. The researchers had wanted to see if the radioactivity would somehow accelerate plant growth. The experiments were obviously unsuccessful but the area remains contaminated to this day. Some people have some crazy theories! 4. McGuire Air Force Base During the Cold War, America was quite eager to have the best nuclear arms of any country in the world. The McGuire Air Force Base was seriously contaminated from weapons grade plutonium in 1960. Located just south of Trenton, this was home to Launch Shelter 204 that stored nuclear, intercontinental ballistic missiles. An unexpected explosion happened in a helium that caused a fire in the nuclear tipped BOMARC missile. The fire burned for about 15 minutes and was extinguished with water. This resulted in radioactive material and water to flow throughout the air force base. Some pieces of debris were found a half mile from the explosion. It could have been much worse considering how close it is to populated areas. The contaminated area stretches an estimated 7 acres and it’s closed off with a barbed wire fence. So don’t even think about coming here! 3. Mailuu-Suu This place is one of the most polluted and radioactive sites in the world. Located in Kyrgyzstan, it’s radiation is derived from the large amount of Uranium ore deposits. Mining operations from 1946 to 1968 left this place severely damaged. They managed to mine nearly 10,000 tons of uranium ore for the Soviet nuclear program. A landslide that took place in 1958 released 6000 cubic meters of material from this mine, leaving radioactive particles all over the place. There’s more than 20000 times the amount of normal radiation at this location. When the mining operations ended, it left many people without jobs. It’s believed that many settlers of this region, put themselves in danger and attempt to sell of the metal to scrap metal dealers. 2.Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Chernobyl and Pripyat were both quickly evacuated after a horrific meltdown took place at the nuclear power plant Reactor number 4 on April 26, 1986. People fled this area so quickly that they left many of their belongings behind. As a result of the meltdown, no one has been allowed to live here due to the high amounts of radiation set off from the explosion. The toxic cloud of particles affected a large part of eastern europe and some material was even found as far away as Switzerland. This photo here depicts what's known as the elephant foot is the reminisce of the black lava firefighters found that oozed directed from the core of the power plant. This is basically molten radioactive lava and certainly not something you want to get close. Stand next to this thing for 300 hundred seconds and you’ll only have two days to live. Although nature has been able to flourish here, mankind certainly won’t be making their way back to this place any time soon. 1.Fukushima Power Plant ` A tsunami that struck the coast of Japan in 2011 after an earth and it’s the worst nuclear power plant disaster since Chernobyl by a longshot. The reactors automatically shut down and the tsunami destroyed the emergency cooling generators causing it to overheat. This lead to not one, not two, but three nuclear meltdowns and the releasing of radioactive material all over the area. It was given the Level 7 classification by the International Nuclear Event Scale. This has lead many people seriously concerned for their health in this area and the eventual number of cancer victims could be through the roof! Radiation hotspots like this one in kashiwa are completely closed from the public. Radioactivity is now found much more often through the entire Pacific ocean and has been causing mutations in plants and animals in many parts of the world.

Mechanical Engineering 75th Anniversary

02:32
https://www.sdsmt.edu/Academics/Degrees/Mechanical-Engineering/ Mechanical engineers work in manufacturing, transportation, mechanical systems, medical technology, industrial production, and thermal science and energy. They design parts and systems for air and spacecraft, cars, electronics, prosthetics, computers, turbines, air-conditioning, robots, and cell phones. In the department's design-based curriculum, students dive into projects from day one. Through the CAMP program, majors build Baja vehicles, drones, electric snowmobiles, and Formula cars tested in Ford's wind tunnel – just four of the thirteen teams. --------------------------------------------------- The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology department of Mechanical Engineering has been ranked sixth in the nation by Schools.com. Schools.com bases its rankings on data from the United States Department of Education. Utilizing a 13-point rating system, Schools.com ranks more than 1,600 U.S. schools based on affordability, flexibility and other quantitative factors, including graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratio and size of the program. SD Mines offers undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering, as well as six online programs. Currently, the three mechanical engineering programs have more than 600 students enrolled. “We are extremely proud that our department of mechanical engineering has been named sixth in the nation” said department head Pierre Larochelle, Ph.D. “Our faculty and staff work diligently to ensure that our students receive the very best education. We are proud to be educating the next generation of mechanical engineers.” The mechanical engineering department at SD Mines is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2018. The program began in 1943, graduating its first two mechanical engineers four years later. More than 3,300 mechanical engineers have graduated from the SD Mines Mechanical Engineering Department since 1947.

Joint development of N. Korean mines could generate 90,000 jobs yearly: report

00:44
"북한 주요광산 남북 공동개발시 연간 9만명 일자리 창출가능" A report by a private research institute shows that if the two Koreas were to jointly develop the mining industry in North Korea, it could create more than 90-thousand jobs a year. The Seoul-based North Korea Resources Institute says... out of some 700 mines projected to be in North Korea, it based its estimate on information about 74 North Korean mines that have deposits of 11 minerals including coal, iron ore and gold. Apart from job growth, it says the project could help reduce South Korea's reliance on imports... and significantly raise its self-sufficiency in those minerals to above 40 percent from the current level of less than three percent. Economist Lumkile Mondi suspension of the reviewed mining charter

09:44
South Africa has suspended implementation of a new mining law, which includes raising the level of shares blacks should own in mining firms, pending a court ruling, the Chamber of Mines industry body. Mining shares fell to more than one-year lows when Mines Minister Mosebenzi Zwane released the revised mining charter last month, giving resource firms 12 months to meet a new 30 percent minimum for black ownership, up from 26 percent. The Chamber of Mines said the minister had given a written undertaking that the new code would not be implemented until a court ruled on a case against the move brought by the chamber. It said the court would likely hear the so-called interdict application in September. Joining me now to find out what the suspension of the reviewed mining charter means is Economist Lumkile Mondi. GIANT WASTE OF MONEY! - Antminer D3 ASIC Miner

ASIC vs GPU mining? Which one is better? Which one is more profitable? Which one has longer staying power? We got our hands on an Antminer D3 and did a bit of testing to check out what the current ASIC market is like. While this may not be true of all ASIC miners in general, the Antminer D3 is a giant pile of wasted cash. • Buy from Amazon in US: http://amzn.to/2AuVYYu • You can support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/UFDTech • Enter the giveaway: https://gleam.io/sbeCy/zotac-1070-ti-amp-extreme-giveaway For PC parts: • Buy from Wootware in SA: https://goo.gl/LHuwN5 Video was edited on: • X399 Gaming Pro Carbon: http://amzn.to/2iPnnzB • Threadripper 1950X: http://amzn.to/2ikITbh • MSI RX Vega 64: http://amzn.to/2A2JW7Q • Trident Z RGB: http://amzn.to/2prkDHI • Corsair H100i: http://amzn.to/2gRg0mU • ASUS PCI WiFi Adapter: http://amzn.to/2teOAwm • Enthoo Evolv: http://amzn.to/2oHZU5o • Corsair LL 120's: http://amzn.to/2z1w25M • Thermaltake Toughpower RGB 850W: http://amzn.to/2lSKNUv Video was shot on: • Panasonic GH4: http://amzn.to/2tyKUpJ • Sigma 18-35 f1.8: http://amzn.to/2tyDKBB • Tascam DR-40: http://amzn.to/2tRVLxo • AKG Lavalier Mic: http://amzn.to/2uzaVW3 • Rode VideoMic Pro: http://amzn.to/2uzxOZf • Benro Tripod & Head: http://amzn.to/2u0P9xk • Godox LED Lights: http://amzn.to/2uTeHJ2 For the intro/outro music by Kalyptra: https://goo.gl/KyLzTB For the music in the video: https://goo.gl/IMZC9A My Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/ufdisciple My Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/ufdtech My Instagram - http://www.instagram.com/ufdtech Thanks to Tancrid "Tank" Muller for writing this video! STRANGEST Places in Russia

10:46
FROM ABANDONED ISLANDS; TO MYSTERIOUS ANCIENT MAZES; THESE ARE THE 11 STRANGEST Places in Russia ! HEY YOU ! There are more awesome videos being made every week, like and subscribe to World Unearthed so you don't miss a beat ! 11.Yamal Craters During a routine trip, helicopter pilots spotted a mysterious hole, deep in the Siberian Permafrost. Before it was news, a second hole was reported... then a third. At this point, it was not easy to dismiss the curious case of the sinkholes, craters, shafts, whatever you want to call them. By February 2015, a total of seven craters were reported, and people wanted answers. The first official reports stated the craters were caused by explosive methane release, a process connected to global warming.... But other theories have surfaced as well. The holes were there the whole time, they were just covered by ice plugs, that ice melted and boom - there is a hole again. The methane in the area is typical. Unfortunately, the 2nd theory doesn't explain the built up material around the hole, which is indicative of an explosion and not fast melting ice. Both theories do have one thing in common, global warming, but that's a subject for a different video. Stranger still, some internet detectives believe that the craters are the result of experimental plasma arc weapon technology.... 10.Norilsk 9.Vottovaara Mountain In 1978, a Russian adventurer stumbled across this mysterious and unsettling place. Even though it has grown in popularity, the mountain is still hard to access. There are no paved roads and nice tourist welcome centers that hand out visitor maps. With stories of UFO landings, rituals of sacrifice, and eerie “stone pools”, the Vottovaara Mountain will surely be the subject of discoveries in the future. But for now, we only have stories. The whole surrounding area is of special importance to the ancient Sami people, who have lived on these lands for 100s of years, and to this day, pagan believers visit the mountain in hopes of understanding it. The dead trees give out the weirdest vibes, maybe they are the trapped souls of all those ancient people that were sacrificed here? 8.Bolshoi Zayatsky Island 7.Novaya Zemlya 6.Por-Bazhyn 5.Kizhi Island Lots of weird little islands around Russia huh? Kizhi island doesn’t have a grand mystery or unexplained history around it, it's just… different. The big 22 dome church we see in these pictures was built in 1714 and has managed to stay strong to this day, with only minor repairs. At one point, the church was surrounded by a massive wall that served as protection from Polish and Swedish attacks. The island is part of the Kizhi Open Air Museum, and anyone that is interested in the beautiful architecture, can visit around 90 different wooden structures. Pretty cool. 4.The Amber Room 3.Mir Mine Another YouTube Certified ClickBait 3000, the mir mine. The Kimberlite Diamond Pipe “Peace” was one of the deepest open pit mines in the world, so big that helicopters are not allowed to fly over it because of the apparent “suction” by its sheer size and depth. Well, not really. There isn’t any “suction” or staggering gravitational change, the real reason behind the no fly zone is the change of air temperature above the pit. The temperature difference can cause a deadly loss of lift that an inexperienced pilot can not recover from. There is also the whole De Beers conspiracy… which is more fact than conspiracy really. The mining operation in Russia was so big that the De Beers Company, the main distributor of diamonds in the world, had to start buying most of the production from the Mir Mine, so they could still charge exorbitant prices for their diamonds… such nice people right ? Screw it, lets look at some more mines, so we have the Mir Mine at #4, then the Udachnaya Pipe at #3, at number #2 we have Chuquicamata in Chile; and at #1, the largest man made hole in the world, the Bingham Canyon Mine located in Utah. Needless to say, I’m making a mine video in the near future. 2.The Motherland Calls 1.Church of Andrew the Apostle on Vuoksi River We have arrived at our final destination; the secluded Church found in the middle of a river. Believe it or not; the church is not 100s of years old, it was actually built in the year 2000. The Church is open to anyone who is willing to make the trek across the river. If you are afraid of small boats; you can always wait for the winter, when the water around it freezes. So did you know how many time zones Russia spans? The answer is 11, just for comparison, the continental US spans only 4 time zones.
