Oil Exploration In Magadi Basin
Nearly a year after oil was struck in Turkana, the search for oil is now moving south of Kenya to an area known more for the production of soda ash. In a statement, the National Oil Corporation of Kenya has announced that it intends to undertake a deeper assessment of the Magadi basin. This after the state run body announced that it has floated an international tender for the acquisition of two dimensional seismic data on the 400 kilometre stretch that will set the stage for exploratory drilling activities in that exploratory block.

For the first time in 76 years Kenya’s mining industry will now operate under a new law – the mining act of 2016. The new mining act of 2016 repeals the 1940 law which was criticized by investors as having been out of date and out of touch with the times. Economy of Kazakhstan
The economy of Kazakhstan is the largest economy in Central Asia. It possesses enormous oil reserves as well as minerals and metals. It also has considerable agricultural potential with its vast steppe lands accommodating both livestock and grain production, as well as developed space infrastructure, which took over all launches to the International Space Station from the Space Shuttle. The mountains in the south are important for apples and walnuts; both species grow wild there. Kazakhstan's industrial sector rests on the extraction and processing of these natural resources and also on a relatively large machine building sector specializing in construction equipment, tractors, agricultural machinery, and some military items. The breakup of the USSR and the collapse of demand for Kazakhstan's traditional heavy industry products have resulted in a sharp contraction of the economy since 1991, with the steepest annual decline occurring in 1994. In 1995-97 the pace of the government program of economic reform and privatization quickened, resulting in a substantial shifting of assets into the private sector. The December 1996 signing of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium agreement to build a new pipeline from western Kazakhstan's Tengiz Field to the Black Sea increases prospects for substantially larger oil exports in several years. Kazakhstan's economy turned downward in 1998 with a 2.5% decline in GDP growth due to slumping oil prices and the August financial crisis in Russia. A bright spot in 1999 was the recovery of international petroleum prices, which, combined with a well-timed tenge devaluation and a bumper grain harvest, pulled the economy out of recession. Current GDP per capita shrank by 26% in the Nineties. In the 2000s, Kazakhstan's economy grew sharply, aided by increased prices on world markets for Kazakhstan's leading exports—oil, metals and grain. GDP grew 9.6% in 2000, up from 1.7% in 1999. In 2006, extremely high GDP growth had been sustained, and grew by 10.6%. Business with booming Russia and China, as well as neighboring Commonwealth of Independent States nations have helped to propel this growth. The increased economic growth also led to a turn-around in government finances, with the budget moving from a cash deficit of 3.7% of GDP in 1999 to 0.1% surplus in 2000. The country experienced a slowdown in economic growth from 2014 sparked by falling oil prices and the effects of the Ukrainian crisis The country's currency was devalued by 19% in 2004 and by 22% in 2015. 30 Year License For UK Company In Greenland
Greenland has awarded UK-based company London Mining a 30-year licence to build and run a giant iron ore mine. Greenland's industry minister called it the largest commercial project in the autonomous Danish territory's history. London Mining is expected to seek investment partners for the multi-billion dollar project. Some opponents say the open-cast mine will cause environmental damage; others are concerned about plans to bring in up to 3,000 mainly Chinese workers. The iron ore deposit is located 150km (about 90 miles) from Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. In a statement on its website, London Mining said the mine was expected to produce 15m tonnes a year of "very high quality iron ore concentrate to the global steel industry". It said the ore concentrate could be shipped year round from a dedicated deep water port. Safeguards The Greenland government hopes the mine will boost the economy, which is largely dependent on fishing and subsidies from Denmark. "This is indeed a historic moment for Greenland," said Industry and Minerals Minister Jens-Erik Kirkegaard. He said "the largest commercial project to date in Greenland" would boost employment and state revenues - in line with a pledge made by the governing Social Democrats to draw foreign companies to help tap Greenland's resources. The project, known as Isua, is expected to bring in 3,000 workers to Greenland, which has a population of about 56,000, to help build and operate the mine and related infrastructure. London Mining, in a report from June 2010, said it had "identified significant economies of scale, and the involvement of Chinese construction groups is anticipated to deliver significant cost savings". Environmentalists say they want reassurances that the exploitation of the deposits will not come at the cost of extensive environmental damage. "I really hope that the Greenland government has sold itself at a high price, so that London Mining lives up to far stricter requirements than they originally would have done," said Gitte Seeberg, the secretary general of WWF Denmark. She said the Greenland government should insist that the mine be powered by hydroelectric power rather than diesel, and that there should be safeguards to deal with problems such as the dramatic increase in traffic.

Isaac Construction is one of the companies that took on the challenge of meeting the demand to help rebuild Christchurch. Initially the company achieved additional volume through a lot of hard work, driving its production staff and existing equipment to their limits. However, it soon became apparent that the need to expand the company’s production facilities was inevitable to ensure its ability to reliably meet demand over time. That's where we came in. How Marks & Spencer Is Helping To Build A Global ‘Sustainability Tribe’
When UK retailer Marks & Spencer launched its ambitious sustainability strategy in early 2007, it dubbed the strategy “Plan A” to remind us that we have just one planet, so there is no Plan B. Plan A amounted to nothing less than a complete restructuring of the company’s supply chain – from the thousands of small farmers who produce its raw materials to the millions of people who buy its products – and it launched with an ambitious list of 100 commitments covering everything from the way it treats its partners to the health and well-being of its employees. Despite the name, Plan A was designed to change over time, with an initial five-year phase ending in 2012 and leading to a more ambitious second phase, and then another after that. By late 2009, however, it was clear that the project had succeeded in galvanizing the workforce and winning over suppliers, but it wasn’t resonating with customers. “Internally, Plan A has been a powerful change brand, helping 75,000 M&S employees and 2000 suppliers to see the links between activities as disparate as taking trans fats out of food, reducing energy use and promoting Fairtrade,” wrote Mike Barry, the company’s director of sustainability, in a 2009 piece for the UK marketing magazine “Campaign”. “Consumers buy more deeply into sustainability when they are engaged in change, and not just told about it,” he continued, explaining the company’s 2009 decision to add a consumer-facing tagline: “Doing the right thing”, coupled with an education campaign. Overhaul for the Long Haul The 2008 banking crisis hit the retail sector hard, but by late 2009 Plan A had achieved 45 of its 100 commitments; and in 2010, auditors attributed £50 million of extra profit to Plan A – mostly because of energy efficiency and streamlined procurement costs. But Rose decided to leave the company that year, and one of his final acts was to initiate an early end to the phase one so that the sustainability team could harness the lessons learned for a new five-year phase through 2015, with regular five-year intervals after that. “It might take 20 or 25 years to build a truly sustainable Marks & Spencer, and you can’t have a 25-year plan in retail,” says Barry. “Things change by the day, the week, the month.  So what we had to have is a recognition that every few years – and five’s a nice cycle – we’d update the plan, and think about where to go next with it.” Rose’s successor, Marc Bolland, recommitted to Plan A, which added 80 more commitments for the 2010-2015 period. By 2012, Plan A was delivering a net benefit of £105 million, according to that year’s annual report. “The substantive part of this benefit comes from improved resource efficiency, although we are now deriving extra benefits from initiatives that drive our existing business and from new revenue streams,” it said. To engage customers, they decided to crystallize their strategy into distinct Plan A Attributes, “and we decided that every M&S product has to have a Plan A story to tell by 2020,” says Barry. What is a Plan A Attribute? “In most cases, a Plan A attribute will be a well-recognized external environmental and social standard such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified wood or Fairtrade certified cotton,” the 2011 annual report said. “Where external standards don’t exist we work with others to develop our own approach which is credible and robust.” The annual reports hint at rigorous internal debates over what is and is not a Plan A Attribute, and each attribute is clearly defined and documented. Even before settling on a list of Attributes, however, the company agreed make sure that half of all products sold had one by 2015. By 2012, they had identified 55 attributes – 40 for M&S food and household products and 15 for M&S clothing and home products. By 2013, that number had risen to 70, and by 2014 – one year ahead of schedule – 56 percent of all products sold had at least one attribute. Peruse their shelves today, and you’ll find familiar standards like Fairtrade as well as in-house standards like Forever Fish, but Barry says the company has a long way to go. “Metaphorically, we are but 25% sustainable,” he says. “At least 75% of the journey lies ahead.” And that journey, he says, can’t progress in a meaningful way unless we fix the entire ecosystem within which M&S operates. After all, the company’s $23 billion in revenue amounts to a rounding error in the $100 trillion global economy. “Tiny little M&S is not going to make the world’s palm oil production sustainable on its own,” says Barry. “It needs to work with Unilever, with Coke, with Pepsi, with Walmart and all the others to make sure we can move the industry together.” All of those companies have joined multilateral sustainability groups like...

Brian Robertson of Source Exploration: "Drilling Towards NI 43-101 Resource"
At the recent Canadian Investor Conference, held in Vancouver on May 31 and June 1, the Investing News Network (INN) had the chance to chat with Brian Robertson, president and CEO of Source Exploration (TSXV:SOP), about the company's Las Minas project and what it is like working in Mexico. Source has been busy drilling various targets at the project, and right before the conference the company saw some encouraging results. Specifically, drilling at the Nopaltepec target revealed a new highly mineralized zone. "I think the Nopaltepec number-one discovery hole is a very exciting hole, and I say that for a number of reasons. What we have is a hole that intersected several zones of mineralization, the highest grade being 5.74 g/t gold equivalent over 17 meters. Within that 17 meters was a 1-meter intersection grading 35 g/t gold equivalent, so it’s a very exciting intersection," Robertson explained. "And the other part of it is the actual location of that hole and how it is related to other drilling that we have done at Las Minas. It’s approximately 250 meters west of the Santa Cruz high-grade zone." Source also did some step-out drilling at Las Minas, further expanding the down-dip and strike extensions within the El Dorado/Juan Bran zone. Robertson said that all of this drilling is going towards a NI 43-101 resource estimate for the property, which should be finished by the end of this year. INN was also curious about what it is like working in that region of Mexico, and Robertson cited a few reasons why it has been very beneficial to the company. "First of all, a real plus factor for working in that region is the geology. It has tremendous geology. Mexico has tremendous geology. The other thing is that we can drill year round at Las Minas. We are not limited with short seasons, it has excellent infrastructure, there is a hydroelectric power plant at the site and the area is a very safe area. So we feel that we have got a significant discovery in an excellent location." Finally, INN asked how Robertson feels about the gold price and what makes him confident that Source can succeed in today's lower price environment. "[The] gold price in my experience is always very cyclical, and I’ve gone through various cycles on the gold price. My feeling right now is we are at a bottom in the gold price and it will change ... quite dramatically, and it will change before people ever expect it to," Robertson explained. "What we have at Source is a company that has been very successful in a number of areas. We have raised over $2 million in a very difficult junior resource market, we have drilled 4,000 meters, we have excellent people within the company and it is those companies with those attributes that will survive."

Winona LaDuke - Building a Green Economy
Rural communities have often been affected adversely in historic economic systems based on centralized power and food production. The loss of environmental and human wealth has been costly, particularly in Native American communities, but other rural communities are similarly affected. This historic pattern has buttressed an unsustainable way of life. The future must be sustainable in terms of environment, economics and social relations. Relocalizing food and energy systems as core elements of a rural economy indeed national and international economies has the potential to transform world social, economic and political relations. Our work at a local, national and international level describes how communities make change and the implications for larger society.

Samuel Nguiffo struggled tirelessly to stop the liquidation of the world's second largest contiguous rainforest for short-term profit. As a lawyer and founder of the Center for Environment and Development, Nguiffo worked to inform forest-dwelling peoples, including Pygmies, of their legal right to manage their traditional lands. He was also at the forefront of an international effort to ensure that the Chad/Cameroon oil pipeline project did not bring about large-scale forest destruction, marine pollution and social dislocation. Economy of South Korea
South Korea is one of the world's wealthiest nations, and is a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the G-20 major economies. South Korea has a market economy that ranks 15th in the world by nominal GDP and 12th by purchasing power parity (PPP). It is a developed country, with a developed market and high-income economy. South Korea is the only developed country so far to have been included in the group of Next Eleven countries. South Korea had one of the world's fastest growing economies from the early 1960s to the late 1990s, and South Korea is still one of the fastest growing developed countries in the 2000s. South Koreans refer to this growth as the Miracle on the Han River of Heavy-Chemical Industry Drive, and top four chaebol generate 90% of South Korean conglomerate profits. Having almost no natural resources and always suffering from overpopulation in its small territory, which deterred continued population growth and the formation of a large internal consumer market, South Korea adapted an export-oriented economic strategy to fuel its economy, and in 2012, South Korea was the seventh largest exporter and seventh largest importer in the world. Audit Report: NEITI uncovers fresh N2.23 trillion fraud in NNPC
A sum of $3.8billion and N358.3billion oil revenues that should have gone to Federation in 2013 was not remitted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its sub-units, the Nigeria Extractive Industries and Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said in a latest report. The report, which covered activities of the oil and gas and mining sectors in 2013, was unveiled by the Chairman of NEITI, Kayode Fayemi on Monday in Abuja. Aside the outstanding revenues from NNPC, Fayemi said, citing the report, that the sums of $5.966billion and N20.4billion revenues were denied the federation due to crude oil swaps and crude theft. Highlights of the report added that the sum of $599.8million was also lost as a result of under-payments of petroleum profit taxes and royalties by oil and gas companies. The audit also revealed that the Nigeria Liquefied Natural gas (NLNG) paid the sum of $1.289 billion as dividends, interest and loan repayment for 2013. However, while NNPC acknowledged receipt of the amount, it did not remit the money to either the federal government or the Federation. The amount brings to a total of $12.9 billion the total NLNG payments received by NNPC between 2005 and 2013 but not remitted by NNPC to the federal government, the report showed. NLNG is a joint venture project owned by four shareholders namely, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the NNPC which has a 49 per cent stake, Shell Gas BV, SGBV, 25.6 per cent; Total LNG Nigeria Limited, 15 per cent; and Eni International (N.A,) N.V. Kansas i/ˈkænzəs/ KAN-zəs is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. It is named after the Kansa Native American tribe which inhabited the area. The tribe's name is often said to mean "people of the wind" or "people of the south wind," although this was probably not the term's original meaning. Residents of Kansas are called "Kansans." For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the Eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the Western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue. Political Concepts: The Trump Edition (Friday AM Session 2)
Political Concepts at Brown: A Critical Lexicon in the Making The goal of Political Concepts is to serve as a platform for revising, inventing, and experimenting with concepts while exploring the political dimension of their use and dissemination. Participants operate under the assumption that our era urgently needs a revised political lexicon that would help us better understand the world in which we live and act, and that the humanities at large can and should contribute toward such a revision. In the past, some of the participants revised key political concepts while others showed the political work done by terms and common nouns that are not usually considered “political.” The 2017–2018 conference was dedicated to analyzing and contesting the transformation of the American political system under the presidency of Donald Trump. Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
