Modern Mine Safety: A Union of Technology and Culture

33:08
Mine site accidents can be devastating events with far-reaching consequences. According the U.S. Mine Safety & Health Administration there is an average of 40 open-pit heavy vehicle incidents per year resulting in six fatalities. Moreover, the costs incurred from such accidents can easily reach millions of dollars, even before considering the implications of insurance, investigation expenses, workforce morale, publicity, share values, and so on. Mining companies around the world are recognizing the importance of mine safety and are setting goals to eliminate accidents and achieve a safer and healthier workplace. Reaching these goals, however, is not easy. Fortunately, advancements in modern mining technology in conjunction with cultural and behavioral shifts can provide your organization with the tools and knowledge to meet and exceed your safety goals. Brushy Creek Mine, Calcite and Marcasite crystal Mining, Reynolds County, Missouri, 1994 - Part 3

09:42
The Brushy Creek Mine, Located in the Viburnum Trend District of Reynolds County, Missouri has been known and loved by mineral collectors for decades, probably most notably for attractive calcite and marcasite combination pieces. In this series of videos we will be exploring the origins of some of these pieces, perhaps some which reside in your own collections to this day. In 1994 Top Gem Minerals, owned at the time by Mike New and Joe Kielbaso, got the contract from the Doe Run Company to collect mineral specimens in the Brushy Creek Mine. The first of two collection efforts took place in 1994 from August to December. The second took place in 1995 from April to July, and over that time some truly staggering numbers would be amassed. 26,000+ diapers and 4 miles of bubble pack would be used to wrap and protect specimens that would find their way into 800+ chicken boxes. All told over 24 tons of material would be shipped back to Top Gem for later sale. The chambers that were hand excavated ran 425 feet deep horizontally and the ceiling height reached 30 feet in places. Those present over the course of the two efforts, in no particular order, were; Joe Kielbaso, Mark "The Mine Rat" Kielbaso, Brian Stefanec, Brian Huntsman, Paul Jett, Ray Carillo, Travis "T-Bone" Hartin, and Eugene Quintana. (If we misspelled anyones name or left someone out we apologize.) This is just one of a long series of videos exploring every chamber that was worked in during the project. https://www.MineRatMinerals.com/ https://www.facebook.com/MineRatMinerals http://stores.ebay.com/open-adit-west Mine Rat Minerals is a division of Open Adit West, we specialize in and sell mineral specimens from all over the world. Jobs move to Mexico From a Chrysler Plant in Missouri

04:48
People you have to realize that we need big American jobs like the Chrysler Plant. Those people that work there are mostly the middle class. But now that those people will get paid less in other jobs. They wont be spending as much and then you have the domino effect with businesses around that area and the suppliers for that business. Then the businesses that supply Chrysler with the parts are going to be effected and so on and so forth. All those jobs lost, so Chrysler can make more money in Mexico. Its sad that people dont realize that we as Americans need to buy American made stuff so that money goes to American familys working American jobs. Support our nation by saving American jobs.

Paul Harris about gold mining in Colombia

15:44
Subscribe to our newsletter at http://www.goldmoney.com/goldresearch. Paul Harris, publisher of the Colombia Gold Letter, talks to GoldMoney's Dominic Frisby about the state of the mining sector in Colombia. Though Colombia has been a gold producer for centuries, its mining technology has fallen behind the times due to the country's internal problems. It was only in 2002, when new president Álvaro Uribe Vélez assured democratic security, that a gold rush broke out leading to the discovery of 75-80 million ounces over the last 15 years. Discussing the conflicts between mining companies and environmental protection groups, Harris explains that some modern mining techniques are still poorly understood by people in the communities and local and national government. Therefore the mining companies need to better educate about their projects in order to combat fears from the public. Dominic points out that for many Latin American countries, natural resources make up a large part of exports, which is why mining plays a big socio-economic role. These resources can be very advantageous for the countries' economic development. They agree that the Colombian exploration sector has bottomed out and is ready to move higher again. In his report, Harris examines about 50-60 companies. He points out that Colombia is blessed with a great geographical location and recommends visiting the gold museum in Bogota, which displays an impressive selection of the remaining Inca gold. This podcast was recorded on 22 August 2012.

Giant Mine sits near Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Once it was a productive gold mine, but after the gold ran out, the mining company went bankrupt and left the government to clean up the mess: enough arsenic trioxide dust to kill everyone on Earth. The solution: freezing it, at least for now. Thanks to all the team at the Giant Mine Remediation Project! Settle Open-Pit Barite Mine Exploration: We found a road grader!

10:54
Despite our speculation in the video about this being a lead or iron mine, the Settle Mine was actually a barite pit owned by the Milchem company and operated into at least October 1969. It seems to have sold crushed barite to the Pfizer chemical company, likely for use in drilling mud. We bumped into some local bowhunters who had shot a deer in the area that morning and were tracking it; they were able to provide a bit of information that led me to some decent online resources- more than we had had before! There are numerous other barite mines around Potosi, many with extant structures. This makes them ideal candidates for visitation and documentation, as most structures are torn down for scrap shortly after a mine closes here in the Ozarks. Officially, barite production in Missouri wrapped up by 1986. Unofficially, there is evidence of numerous small-time mines currently operating off-the-books. We fully support this activity, and may explore one of the recently-closed bootleg mines at some point.

SubTropolis

02:30
Kansas City, Missouri SubTropolis is a 55,000,000-square-foot (5,100,000 m2), 1,100-acre (4.5 km2) manmade cave in the bluffs above the Missouri River in Kansas City, Missouri, United States, that is claimed to be the world's largest underground storage facility. Developed by late Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt via Hunt Midwest Real Estate Development, Inc., it has trademarked the phrase World's Largest Underground Business Complex. Dug into the Bethany Falls limestone mine, SubTropolis is, in places, 160 feet (49 m) beneath the surface. It has a grid of 16 ft (4.9 m) high, 40 ft (12 m) wide tunnels separated by 25 ft (7.6 m) square limestone pillars created by the room and pillar method of hard rock mining. The complex contains almost 7 miles (11 km) of illuminated, paved roads and several miles of railroad track. Currently 5,000,000 square feet (460,000 m2) is occupied and 10,000,000 square feet (930,000 m2) are "improved." About 3.2 acres (13,000 m2) of available space are added each year as active mining continues. The mine naturally maintains temperatures between 65 and 70 °F (18 and 21 °C) year-round. The United States Postal Service and the United States Environmental Protection Agency lease spaces within SubTropolis, the United States Postal Service for its collectible stamp operations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their Region-7 Training and Logistics Center.[1] On the north edge of the complex Hunt developed the Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun amusement park complex. Hunt's extensive business dealings in Clay County contributed to the Chiefs having their NFL Training Camp at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri until 1991. Other facilities like SubTropolis exist although not on the same scale, such as the abandoned mine in Butler, Pennsylvania used by Corbis and the US Federal Government for secure storage. As the room and pillar mining method is used to extract limestone throughout the Midwest, many companies are looking at ways to utilize the hundreds of millions of square feet created in this manner for everything from mushroom farming to crude oil stockpiling.

The Underground Storage Area in Independence, Mo.

04:24
Unknown to most Missourians, there are former underground limestone quarry-turned storage caves just east of Kansas City, in Independence. We visited two on the same day. This one was called the Carefree Business Park, if I'm not mistaken. Looking closely, you can see the massive stone columns literally holding the stone ceiling up. The maze-like structure created by the hollowing out of limestone has created a massive underground void which has been turned in to underground storage. As you can see in the vid, the place has a surreal empty feel and look. Semi's drive around and pull up to loading docks just like those found at any factory or business on the planet. The only difference is that these are completely underground, and in VERY tight quarters. The semi we were riding in frequently came within inches of the limestone walls and columns when making corners, trying to navigate and negotiate the very tight and unforgiving area. At one point, you'll see a semi drive past the camera. I thought the truck was going a bit to fast for the area. Anyone walking through the myriad of columns could have blindly walked out in front of the truck, allowing the driver almost no way out to miss the person. At :14 seconds in to the video, you can see two of the closed dock doors. The pavement leading to the dock doors is on a decline. You can clearly see there is very little room for movement. Maneuvering a car through here is a piece of cake. Try doing it with a semi 75 feet long. The cars seen parked in the video belong to people who actually work in the businesses housed underground: there are storage and warehousing companies located in these tunnels. Compare this video to the similar vid I have posted of a similar underground storage facility located nearby in Independence. It was called GeoSpace. That facility is not nearly as bright nor as refined as this one is. It is much darker, much tighter, and more cave-like. I guess it was an older facility.

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age

02:08:21
The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. 30HP St Mary's Oil Engine Company St Charles Missouri (produced under a license from R.M. Hvid company). This engine was removed from a clay mine in St Louis County (running a DC generator) and kept in clean/dry storage ever since that time. This engine runs flawlessly. Stationary engine hit and miss. The original application was not on the cart that is in the video. After the engine was removed from its stationary mount it was installed with the compressed air tank alongside the Faribanks Morse 3hp gas engine and Fairbanks Morse air compressor (used to set the engine in motion for initial startup (think pup engine concept). Was Rudolph Diesel technically the first to invent the "true diesel", perhaps but the technology was known and in production/use well before his experimental design of 1903. The inventor Jan Brons developed his first engine in 1900. At the same time period on the shores of the U.S., Rasmus Hvid (naturalized U.S. citizen from Denmark) born in 1881 filed his patent in 1912 with a slightly different design than the Brons design. The R.M. Hvid engine took a slightly different approach and licensed his designs to engine manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada. This engine was built by the St Marys Oil Engine Company.

Lon Hogan Interview 1 - Part 4 - Shannon County Film Digitization Project

10:15
Camera roll 059 is one of five rolls (054, 057, 058, 059, 060) containing an interview with Lon Hogan, who, at 97, was the oldest resident of Shannon County, Missouri. This was the first of two interviews with Hogan. It was recorded August 26, 1978. The second interview, filmed on November 3, 1978, is on rolls 119 through 122 of this collection. Both interviews are firsthand accounts of life in Shannon County during the heyday of the timber industry. Hogan was born and raised on a farm near Willow Springs, Missouri. In 1897, his parents sold the farm and moved to Birch Tree, Missouri, where Hogan worked in the Cordz-Fisher Lumber Company sawmill. When Cordz-Fisher closed its mill, Hogan got a job in the hub mill at Fishertown, a company town built and run by the Ozark Land and Lumber Company, and became an entrepreneur on the side, opening a restaurant in Fishertown and a photography business in nearby Winona. After OL&L closed its mill, Hogan moved to West Eminence where he worked for the Missouri Lumber and Mining Company in its sawmill. Hogan spent much of his free time photographing events and social life in the towns, workers at the mills, and anything else that caught his fancy. Many of the photographs documenting the lumber mill era in Shannon County were taken by Hogan. Both Hogan interviews cover a wide range of topics, from his early years on the farm to the closing of the mills. Although he suffered from a mild palsy, his mind was sharp and clear. He often inserts small details and brief allusions to people, places, companies, and customs too numerous to reference, but which lend rich texture to the interview and provide valuable bits of information. In roll 059, Hogan tells how Missouri Lumber and Mining brought many of their employees with them to West Eminence. He talks about housing conditions in the Fishertown, the water supply, the way people were paid, buying on credit, the company store, and how he was able to make money as a photographer. Part of the raw footage recorded 1978-1979 for the 1981 documentary motion pictures "Shannon County: Home" and "Shannon County: Hearts of the Children." Aerial Video of Historic Mining Sites in Utah

15:11
This aerial video is of historic mining sites in Utah and Nevada. These sites are for sale. MINING - Mine Site Aerial Video Surveillance Services/Drones Taking aerial video of mining sites to date has been done with very expensive helicopter chartering. Not any longer, GTV being an innovator, has been aerial videoing mining sites for well over a couple years now with drone multi rotor copters. The technology today allows for a huge advancement in mining site security through aerial video surveillance. GTV can set up a video surveillance program for a mining company that will allow a 24/7/365 aerial view to the mining site around the clock if they wish. We program the waypoint of the mining site perimeter and day or night the mining company’s security personnel can see if there is an intrusion live and also video feed the data back to the base of operations. Our drones come with HD daytime cams and with a simple plug and play change infrared function is made available. Don’t get us wrong, we are not selling toys here. What we bring to the mining industry is the tools and the process developed to greatly increase mining site security. The aerial video drones we provide and setup mining companies with are not the off-the-shelf standard system anyone can purchase. They are developed for long range flight, long range video transmission (over 2KM) for a live view and an ease of use including reliability. MINING - Mine Site Aerial Video Surveillance Benefits 1, Aerial video survey an existing, operational or historic mining site 2, Get a 3D view to the mining operation 3, Aerial video surveillance add a huge level of security to a mining site (day or night) 4, Aerial videos of a mining site will greatly support potential investors 5, Remote controlled aerial video drones are less costly and much safer than utilizing a helicopter to survey a mining site

2014 Scott Shields, Medal of Merit Under 40, Amer. Mining Hall of Fame

02:25
The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is pleased to recognize Scott Shields as a 2014 recipient of the Medal of Merit Under 40 for induction into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Manager, Mining Application Engineering, Joy Global Surface Mining. Scott M. Shields is a fifth-generation Arizona Miner. In 1995 he joined the Phelps Dodge Morenci Mine as a Surveyor and despite his young age, was successfully able to implement new techniques (both conceptual and in field) to improve mine operations. Shields initiated ground-breaking work with GPS integration and co-authored Optimization of GPS on Track Type Dozers and GPS in the Pits: Differential GPS Applications at the Morenci Copper Mine. This novel idea of building roads by using GPS without first conducting surveys won best of session at the Institute of Navigation conference and resulted in Shields being sponsored by Senator John McCain to rep resent Phelps Dodge Mining Company for "GPS on the Hill." During his tenure at Phelps Dodge and later with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., Shields helped to develop sulfide leaching with bacterial augmentation, advanced electrowinning technologies, leach pad monitoring, and GPS integration. While serving as the Autonomous Mining Program Site Coordinator, Shields supervised the construction of the San Juan Experimental Mine and was instrumental in laying the groundwork for a real autonomous mine of the future. Shields left Freeport-McMoRan in 2007 to earn a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering at The University of Arizona. While attending school, he was employed by the U of A as an associate mine engineer and was placed in charge of overseeing the design and construction of the new San Xavier Underground Training Center, facilitating research funded jointly by mining companies, private organizations, and the government. Although challenged with full-time work and school, Shields was the winner of the 2008 Copper Club Scholarship, the 2009 Leonard Judd Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Scholarship, the Mining Engineering nominee for the Thomas G. Chapman fellowship and scholarship, the 2010 MMSA/SMEF Presidential Scholarship, and was the UA College of Engineering 2011 Outstanding Senior in Mining Engineering. In addition, Shields graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011 and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, a National Engineering Academic Fraternity. Shields now manages a team of Joy Global Mining Engineers supporting the applications of P&H Surface Mining and Joy Mining Machinery Underground products. Notably he has provided optimization and best practice in more than 60 mines and in 18 countries on five continents. Shields is an adviser for The University of Arizona ILB, Montana Tech MIAB, University of Missouri Science and Technology Advisory Committee, South Dakota School of Mines ECE Advisory Board, and he also serves as an Executive Committee Member and officer of the SME.

Carp fishing with dry flies! Fly Fishing by Todd Moen

09:01
SUBSCRiBE & “Ring the Bell" ►http://goo.gl/9Z5dTu Summer temps hovering in the upper 90’s. Rising carp. The Missouri River. Dry fly fishing. Montana’s magnificent Big Sky. Put these together, and T-Motion Theater had an unlikely, yet absolutely remarkable fly fishing video opportunity. Carp, unlike trout or steelhead or bonefish or any for that matter, feed in a frenzy known to some anglers as the “Hour of Power”. This is when schools of carp rise to the surface in fierce unison, their big mouths breaking the surface and “hoovering” up bugs in a linear path on the top of the frothy, shallow water. Montana native, fly fishing guide extraordinaire and longtime Gallatin Gateway friend of mine, Brian Kimmel of Shadow of a Trout Outfitters, told me that the next T-Motion film MUST be on Montana carp. I had no idea what I was in for. I packed up my gear into a boat driven by Adipose Boatworks founder and co-owner, Tracy Allen. Tracy quickly jetted Brian into the action of carp on the Missouri River near Helena, Montana. This film immediately became “Carpology,” as Brian revealed his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for these giant, heat loving, bottom dwelling, big-bellied fish. With topwater action, hard fights, explosive runs, breathtaking scenery and excellent angling, Carpology-PART ONE will leave you waiting anxiously for PART TWO! Thanks to Kimmel and Allen. Enjoy! We recently camped at Johnson Shut-ins Campground and I had a great day to fly the DJI Phantom 3 Standard to get some aerial drone footage. This campground has more activities available to it than most including a paved bike riding trail, the shut-ins themselves, hiking and horseback trails. Loop 1 is the equestrian loop for campers that want to bring their horses. This loop has concrete pads. Loop 2 has full hook-ups water, sewer and electric with concrete pads for camper trailers and RVs. Loop 3 has electric at the sites with concrete pads. Loop 4 are basic sites with concrete pads and no electric. Loop 5 are walk in sites that are meant for tents most of them have wooden decks with dirt pads. See my other Johnson Shut-ins video if you want to see more about the park and the shut-ins. https://youtu.be/9XNYSYJTcdE This is one of my favorite areas of Missouri.
