At Glencore Raglan Mine, Canada: Tamatumani supports indigenous mining jobs at our Nunavik mine

02:56
In 2008, Raglan Mine began a programme to create more Inuit jobs and career opportunities, with indigenous mining traineeships: the initiative is called Tamatumani. Raglan Mine is a Glencore nickel operation in northern Canada; although it already employed Inuit workers we wanted to encourage more long-term employment, expand indigenous mining opportunities and foster better workplace integration. The Tamatumani training and employment programme is sponsored by the government for its work with local Inuit communities. Raglan Mine employees visit communities in the local Nunavik region, attend community events to discuss job opportunities and meet interested candidates, visit high schools to encourage students to consider a career in mining, and meet with local community representatives on a variety of issues. A key initiative created as part of the Tamatumani project team is the Inuit Employment Centre. This is the first point of contact to receive and process requests for Inuit personnel from the various services and contractors based at the Raglan Mine site. So far Tamatumani has placed Inuit workers in over 100 positions, covering more than 45 types of jobs. Our number of Inuit employees has risen from 55 in 1998 to 158 as of 31 December 2014, the highest number in Raglan Mine’s history. At the end of 2014, over 18% of our workforce was from Inuit communities. To find out more about Tamatumani, visit http://www.mineraglan.ca/EN/Sustainability/stakeholder-engagement/Pages/Tamatumani.aspx

At Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines, Australia: Mike Westerman on creating shared value

00:56
Creating shared value. We're proud of our more than 90 year history of successful coexistence in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. Hear from Mike Westerman on why creating a successful business is important to the local community and not just shareholders. About Mount Isa Mines We operate two separate mining and processing streams, copper and zinc, to deliver natural resources that have enduring roles in society. With the largest zinc resource base and the biggest underground network of mines in the world, we provide work for almost 4,000 employees and contractors. From the tiny copper connections in our mobile phones to the zinc used to galvanise industrial steel, the minerals we mine play vital roles in our lives every day. As well as the Australian market, our products are exported to 16 countries across Asia, Europe and the United Kingdom, contributing billions of dollars to the Australian economy every year. One of only a handful of Australian mines located on the doorstep of a community, we are dedicated to supporting local people and local businesses and creating strong links between our operations and the city of Mount Isa. We do this through generous contributions to local health, education, cultural and capacity building initiatives and the funding of vital public services and infrastructure development projects. Since 1924, our operations have been at the heart of life in “the Isa”. While we’re part of one of the world’s largest mining companies, we have retained a uniquely decentralised management structure that fosters a sense of responsibility in our people, paves the way for innovation and encourages an entrepreneurial spirit. We strive to preserve the long-term health, function and viability of the natural environments affected by our operations, and to maintain safe and healthy workplaces based on mutual respect, fairness and integrity. http://www.mountisamines.com.au/EN/Pages/default.aspx

Introduction to Underground Mining - What will I learn?

00:51
Underground Training Systems Ph: 08 9297 2647 email: [email protected] web: www.undergroundtraining.com.au Underground Training Systems (UTS) has been set up to offer courses in hardrock underground mining (Gold, Nickel, Copper, Diamonds and many other base metals, excluding coal). Each course has been developed using our company Core Values and Positive Tips for Safety in a Hazardous Workplace . All courses are presented by a consultant that has a W.A shift boss ticket and more than 15 years practical underground mining experience. This gives the course participants a unique opportunity to ask questions and receive experienced answers about all different aspects of mining life. The jobs are Australia wide and there are roughly 23,000 hard rock miners within the Australian industry. The W.A. the Mines Department has estimated that between 10%-15% of these workers leave the industry every year. That works out to be 2300 to 3450 people that leave the industry every year (for a number of reasons) that need to be replaced. These entry level positions are filled with new starters that are commonly referred to as Green . This is where UTS Introduction to Underground Mining course has given employers the opportunity to employ people that have the knowledge of how an underground mine works and the entry level skills that they will be required to be performed. This allows a UTS graduate to become a useful member of an underground crew in 4-7 days of being on site. Entry level jobs covered include dump truck operator, nipper, drillers offsider and service crew member . By completing Introduction to Underground Mining over three days you will have the knowledge for us to present your resume to the relevant mining companies for entry level positions as part of our Placement Program . This program has been designed to give you the best possible chance to "get your foot in the door" and helpful staff who will start the employment process once you enrol.

Zinc is the fourth most mined metal in the world after iron, aluminum, and copper. It has strong anticorrosive properties and bonds well with other metals. Consequently, about one-half of the zinc that is produced is used in zinc galvanizing, which is the process of adding thin layers of zinc to iron or steel to prevent rusting. Large quantities of zinc are used to produce die-castings, which are important in the automobile, electrical and hardware industries. Antamina Zinc Mine, Peru: Antamina mine in the Andes Mountains of Peru is one of the largest copper/zinc mines in the world. It is operated by the consortium of leading mining companies, including BHP Billiton, Glencore and Teck, is the fifth biggest zinc producer. Antamina is one of the largest copper and zinc mine worldwide, and also a major producer of silver, lead and molybdenum. Rampura Agucha mine, India: Rampura Agucha Zinc-Lead-Silver Mine, located on a massive sulfide deposit in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, India. The mine has a combination of open pit mine and underground mine. The open pit operation includes drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling and Underground Mining is carried out using Long Hole Open Stoping with Paste Fill method with mined out stopes backfilled with cemented rock & with cemented tailing in paste form. Rampura Agucha mine is owned by Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), and has the world's largest deposits of zinc and lead. Cerro Lindo mine, Peru: Cerro Lindo Zinc Mine , Peru is the largest underground mine in Peru. Votorantim’s Cerro Lindo polymetallic mine is the sixth biggest producer of zinc and the largest underground mine in Peru McArthur River zinc mine: McArthur River open pit mine is one of the world's largest zinc, lead and silver mine in Australia. Chinese Mine Ignored Safety Warnings Before Deadly Explosion

02:13
The late-night explosion at the Xinxing coal mine in Chinas Hegang city on November 21 was the countrys deadliest mine disaster in four years. But could over 100 lives have been saved? According to this Southern Weekend report entitled 43 Deadly Minutes, at 1:37 am on November 21—43 minutes before the deadly explosion—(quote) The dispatching station received a report: gas concentration has exceeded the safety level by 12 percent. Mr. Li, who declined to give his first name, lost his brother to the disaster. He told Sound of Hope Radio that the mine operator ignored the safety warning. [Mr. Li, Brother of Mine Explosion Victim] After the gas monitoring technician discovered the gas level, he took my brothers team of eight people out of the mine. But the leader of Team 113 didnt let them out. He said, Dont listen to him (the gas monitoring technician), hes just bluffing, nothing will happen. The team leader told my brother to go back down to the mine. The official death toll from the disaster stands at 108. However, relatives of victims question this figure. They say that more than 800 people were at mine that night, not just the 500 claimed by the mining company—meaning more than 108 might have died. Mr. Li says the company was secretive in removing the bodies from the mine. [Mr. Li, Brother of Mine Explosion Victim]: They waited until the investigation team from Beijing left, and didnt dare to carry out the bodies during the day, in case victims relatives would make trouble on the scene. They began carrying out the bodies at night, at around 1 am, and the whole time there were military police on guard. The coal mine has assigned the family of each victim a so-called comfort team. But Mr. Li says that instead of assisting his grieving family, the team was violent when his family tried to ask questions. He says the coal mine has also refused to let them see his brothers body. China has the world's deadliest coal mining industry. Last year, more than 3,000 people were killed in floods, explosions, collapses and other mining accidents.

Meandu Pink Shirts

03:05
On Wednesday, 18 April, miners at Stanwell's Meandu Mine held one of the South Burnett's largest ever breast cancer awareness days, with around 190 employees wearing pink safety shirts to work. Employees from Thiess and Stanwell wore the pink shirts to show their support for the fight against this devastating form of cancer. "Traditionally, pink is one of the last colours that mining people would wear to work," Thiess's Meandu Mine Operations Manager, Greg Mortlock, said. "However, wearing pink is a very visible way to support this important cause," he said. Stanwell's General Manager of Mining Operations, Bob Rutten, said: "Breast cancer has a devastating effect on South Burnett families, including the families of Meandu miners." "Our employees at Meandu Mine were very happy to swap their usual yellow safety shirts for highvisibility pink," he said. In total, around 230 pink shirts were bought for $50 each by Meandu miners, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among Australian women, with 1 in 9 expected to be diagnosed by the age of 85. There is hope, however. In the past decade, deaths from breast cancer have fallen by around 22%.

John Watson - This is our story - TV version

01:02
Australian mining means a lot to Australia. It supports our country, provides thousands of jobs - and is filled with great people. This is John Watson's story. See more stories at: ‪http://www.thisisourstory.com.au/‬ --- Although John Watson is a keen runner, what he's really into is Olympic pools. Thanks to John's expertise, and the mining industry's commitment to the environment, last year alone John managed to save the equivalent of over 77 Olympic pools full of water from the Hunter River region. John started in the mining industry as an industrial chemist working in Newcastle. As his career progressed, John found himself doing more and more environmental work, by improving air quality in mines. To John this work was enormously satisfying. Over the next few years his job enabled him to move around while balancing both sides of the industry: helping run a successful mining operation, and at the same time taking care of the environment. When the time came to have children, John and his wife Jane decided to move back to the place they know and love best -- the Hunter - where both their families are originally from. John secured a job with Xstrata in the region, which allowed him to take care of his family, and the environment in which they lived. John now works across all Xstrata sites in the area, and has many young people coming on board as environmentalists. In fact, at only 42 he's already seeing the next generation of environmentalists emerging in the mining industry. John says: "It's a great feeling to mentor them and help them develop their careers in this direction." John's passionate about helping young people achieve their goals, and teaching them about the importance of the environment. His work in the mining industry allows him to focus on a range of different environmental concerns. "I can go from greenhouse, to water, to noise issues in one day, and then become involved in sponsoring community projects." This community work includes upgrading the youth centre in Singleton, to supporting the Wesley Mission, to river restoration along the Hunter, and much more. He says the attitude within the mining industry is to expand in a responsible way, and create positive legacies for future generations. "These days mining companies have a binding social contract to operate within. So we have to rely on our record as good citizens." And that's exactly what Xstrata is doing in the Hunter region. For example, the company has a series of mines that includes five operations. Essentially, the sites are interlinked with a pipeline network that enables them to transfer water between the mines. This ingenious system allows water to be sent both ways and taken to any mine that needs it. Each site has freshwater allocations that they're able to use, but by recycling the mine water, John and the team save the freshwater, which is great for the environment. They're also managing water recovery from dams so that it can be used more effectively. John's proud of the fact that "recycled water, plus water sourced from mining areas, totalled just under or 95% of our total consumption". Effectively, water from the Hunter River now accounts for less than 5% of their water consumption in the Greater Ravensworth area. This equates to enormous water savings. The total Hunter River water consumption for the Greater Ravensworth Area was reduced last year by 23% or 194 megalitres. That's over 77 Olympic swimming pools, or as far as John's concerned -- just doing his job.
