We began to roll-out our SafeWork initiative in 2013 and continue implementing it at all our assets; still delivering safety improvements. This is a risk-based framework designed for our assets to use as a basis for their own individualised safety improvement plans. The initiative’s aim is to provide everyone with the knowledge and tools to perform every task safely; the overall message is that every individual has the authority to stop unsafe work. http://www.glencore.com/sustainability/our-people/safety/

Stop Glencore-Xstrata's Deadly Mine
Glencore-Xstrata owns a controlling stake in the Tampakan mining project to build a huge copper and gold mine on Mindanao island, southern Philippines. The project threatens to displace thousands of people and destroy 10,000 hectares which are home to rainforest and the source of five rivers. At Glencore Raglan Mine, Canada: Tamatumani supports indigenous mining jobs at our Nunavik mine
In 2008, Raglan Mine began a programme to create more Inuit jobs and career opportunities, with indigenous mining traineeships: the initiative is called Tamatumani. Raglan Mine is a Glencore nickel operation in northern Canada; although it already employed Inuit workers we wanted to encourage more long-term employment, expand indigenous mining opportunities and foster better workplace integration. The Tamatumani training and employment programme is sponsored by the government for its work with local Inuit communities. Raglan Mine employees visit communities in the local Nunavik region, attend community events to discuss job opportunities and meet interested candidates, visit high schools to encourage students to consider a career in mining, and meet with local community representatives on a variety of issues. A key initiative created as part of the Tamatumani project team is the Inuit Employment Centre. This is the first point of contact to receive and process requests for Inuit personnel from the various services and contractors based at the Raglan Mine site. So far Tamatumani has placed Inuit workers in over 100 positions, covering more than 45 types of jobs. Our number of Inuit employees has risen from 55 in 1998 to 158 as of 31 December 2014, the highest number in Raglan Mine’s history. At the end of 2014, over 18% of our workforce was from Inuit communities. To find out more about Tamatumani, visit http://www.mineraglan.ca/EN/Sustainability/stakeholder-engagement/Pages/Tamatumani.aspx

Underground miners take families to depths of Mt Isa
Underground miners take families to depths of Mt Isa: . Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_PwdFVp32NtZPUqZfAM_jw?sub_confirmation=1  One of Australia’s mining giants has given its employees’ families a taste of what it is like to work 600 metres underground. Last week, Glencore opened the doors of its George Fisher lead, zinc and silver mine in north-west Queensland to more than 1000 workers’ family members. Joining the tour was Heather Dewar, a Mount Isa-based truck driver whose husband, Matt, works at the mine. “I haven’t been underground out here. The way I’ve heard about it, it’s quite small and dark,” Ms Dewar said, with a degree of understatement considering the mine reaches more than a half a kilometre underground. Matt Dewar said that showing his family how the mine worked was important. “You come here, you put in the long hours, it’s hot, it’s dusty. But at the end of the day you get to go home and see your family,” he said.  #Underground, #miners, #take, #families, #depths, #MtIsa

Meandu Pink Shirts
On Wednesday, 18 April, miners at Stanwell's Meandu Mine held one of the South Burnett's largest ever breast cancer awareness days, with around 190 employees wearing pink safety shirts to work. Employees from Thiess and Stanwell wore the pink shirts to show their support for the fight against this devastating form of cancer. "Traditionally, pink is one of the last colours that mining people would wear to work," Thiess's Meandu Mine Operations Manager, Greg Mortlock, said. "However, wearing pink is a very visible way to support this important cause," he said. Stanwell's General Manager of Mining Operations, Bob Rutten, said: "Breast cancer has a devastating effect on South Burnett families, including the families of Meandu miners." "Our employees at Meandu Mine were very happy to swap their usual yellow safety shirts for highvisibility pink," he said. In total, around 230 pink shirts were bought for $50 each by Meandu miners, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among Australian women, with 1 in 9 expected to be diagnosed by the age of 85. There is hope, however. In the past decade, deaths from breast cancer have fallen by around 22%.

At Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines, Australia: Mike Westerman on creating shared value
Creating shared value. We're proud of our more than 90 year history of successful coexistence in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. Hear from Mike Westerman on why creating a successful business is important to the local community and not just shareholders. About Mount Isa Mines We operate two separate mining and processing streams, copper and zinc, to deliver natural resources that have enduring roles in society. With the largest zinc resource base and the biggest underground network of mines in the world, we provide work for almost 4,000 employees and contractors. From the tiny copper connections in our mobile phones to the zinc used to galvanise industrial steel, the minerals we mine play vital roles in our lives every day. As well as the Australian market, our products are exported to 16 countries across Asia, Europe and the United Kingdom, contributing billions of dollars to the Australian economy every year. One of only a handful of Australian mines located on the doorstep of a community, we are dedicated to supporting local people and local businesses and creating strong links between our operations and the city of Mount Isa. We do this through generous contributions to local health, education, cultural and capacity building initiatives and the funding of vital public services and infrastructure development projects. Since 1924, our operations have been at the heart of life in “the Isa”. While we’re part of one of the world’s largest mining companies, we have retained a uniquely decentralised management structure that fosters a sense of responsibility in our people, paves the way for innovation and encourages an entrepreneurial spirit. We strive to preserve the long-term health, function and viability of the natural environments affected by our operations, and to maintain safe and healthy workplaces based on mutual respect, fairness and integrity. http://www.mountisamines.com.au/EN/Pages/default.aspx

Chinese Mine Ignored Safety Warnings Before Deadly Explosion
The late-night explosion at the Xinxing coal mine in Chinas Hegang city on November 21 was the countrys deadliest mine disaster in four years. But could over 100 lives have been saved? According to this Southern Weekend report entitled 43 Deadly Minutes, at 1:37 am on November 21—43 minutes before the deadly explosion—(quote) The dispatching station received a report: gas concentration has exceeded the safety level by 12 percent. Mr. Li, who declined to give his first name, lost his brother to the disaster. He told Sound of Hope Radio that the mine operator ignored the safety warning. [Mr. Li, Brother of Mine Explosion Victim] After the gas monitoring technician discovered the gas level, he took my brothers team of eight people out of the mine. But the leader of Team 113 didnt let them out. He said, Dont listen to him (the gas monitoring technician), hes just bluffing, nothing will happen. The team leader told my brother to go back down to the mine. The official death toll from the disaster stands at 108. However, relatives of victims question this figure. They say that more than 800 people were at mine that night, not just the 500 claimed by the mining company—meaning more than 108 might have died. Mr. Li says the company was secretive in removing the bodies from the mine. [Mr. Li, Brother of Mine Explosion Victim]: They waited until the investigation team from Beijing left, and didnt dare to carry out the bodies during the day, in case victims relatives would make trouble on the scene. They began carrying out the bodies at night, at around 1 am, and the whole time there were military police on guard. The coal mine has assigned the family of each victim a so-called comfort team. But Mr. Li says that instead of assisting his grieving family, the team was violent when his family tried to ask questions. He says the coal mine has also refused to let them see his brothers body. China has the world's deadliest coal mining industry. Last year, more than 3,000 people were killed in floods, explosions, collapses and other mining accidents.

Introduction to Underground Mining - What will I learn?
Underground Training Systems Ph: 08 9297 2647 email: [email protected] web: www.undergroundtraining.com.au Underground Training Systems (UTS) has been set up to offer courses in hardrock underground mining (Gold, Nickel, Copper, Diamonds and many other base metals, excluding coal). Each course has been developed using our company Core Values and Positive Tips for Safety in a Hazardous Workplace . All courses are presented by a consultant that has a W.A shift boss ticket and more than 15 years practical underground mining experience. This gives the course participants a unique opportunity to ask questions and receive experienced answers about all different aspects of mining life. The jobs are Australia wide and there are roughly 23,000 hard rock miners within the Australian industry. The W.A. the Mines Department has estimated that between 10%-15% of these workers leave the industry every year. That works out to be 2300 to 3450 people that leave the industry every year (for a number of reasons) that need to be replaced. These entry level positions are filled with new starters that are commonly referred to as Green . This is where UTS Introduction to Underground Mining course has given employers the opportunity to employ people that have the knowledge of how an underground mine works and the entry level skills that they will be required to be performed. This allows a UTS graduate to become a useful member of an underground crew in 4-7 days of being on site. Entry level jobs covered include dump truck operator, nipper, drillers offsider and service crew member . By completing Introduction to Underground Mining over three days you will have the knowledge for us to present your resume to the relevant mining companies for entry level positions as part of our Placement Program . This program has been designed to give you the best possible chance to "get your foot in the door" and helpful staff who will start the employment process once you enrol.

Laura Pidcock | Maiden Speech
Thank you, Mr Speaker, for calling me to make my maiden speech. I also thank the people of North West Durham for allowing me to be here at all. It is apt that I should be called in this debate because, before entering the House, I worked with schools, colleges and teachers for nine years and my predecessor, Pat Glass, dedicated her professional and then political career to education. If I can be half the friend and ally of schools in North West Durham that Pat Glass has been, I will be doing very well. Pat Glass leaves a brand new secondary school as one important legacy of her time here. Even in opposition, she managed to prise funding for a school from the former Education Secretary, which took the energy of a lion hunting a gazelle. I and others are truly grateful for all that she did for the constituency, and I wish her well in her retirement. North West Durham is the most magnificent of places, and I am truly blessed to represent such a beautiful part of our country. The green, lush countryside is simply breathtaking, peppered with arable, dairy and upland hill farms; the richness of our culture and history is astounding; and the people are hard workers, proud and strong. Some in here would have us in the north painted as uncultured and without finesse—as savages—but people only think that or say that because they do not know our communities or our people. My constituents are the real wealth creators, and they are people who make this nation great. If anyone wants to see one of the world’s finest cultural traditions, they should look no further than Durham miners gala, which, although not in my constituency, is an annual pilgrimage for many of my constituents and is the biggest trade union gathering in Europe. It celebrates the best of solidarity, born of struggle. North West Durham has a long and proud tradition of industry and skilled work. Consett was dominated by steel production and became renowned for the thick red dust that covered the town—airborne iron oxide from the plant. At its peak in the 1960s the steelworks provided jobs for some 6,000 people. We had lead mines and hundreds of jobs in a thriving textiles industry in Crook. That industry was unfortunately left to decline. Jobs and communities were not invested in and unemployment rose exponentially. Many are still living with the scars of that period today. Turning to this place, this building is intimidating. It reeks of the establishment and of power; its systems are confusing—some may say archaic—and it was built at a time when my class and my sex would have been denied a place within it because we were deemed unworthy. I believe that the intimidating nature of this place is not accidental. The clothes, the language, and the obsession with hierarchies, control and domination are symbolic of the system at large. But the most frustrating thing has been to sit opposite those people who tell me that things are better, and that suffering has lessened for my constituents. I would like them to come and tell the people who have been sanctioned that things are better. I would like them to tell that to the teacher in my constituency who was recently made redundant. I would like them to talk to the 16,500 people in County Durham in receipt of food parcels. I would like them to talk to the nurses, the junior doctors and the firefighters—come and tell them that years of austerity have improved their practice or their profession. I will end with this: we can choose, in this place, to be self-obsessed, to perpetrate fear and greed, to be a monument to injustice, or this can be a place that elevates equality, facilitates the power of the people, and esteems and properly funds a rich network of public services so that nobody is left in the indignity of poverty.

Underground Mine Construction & Development: Redpath leading the way in safety innovation
Redpath was awarded a contract to remove the old and construct a new overhead gantry crane system in an underground workshop in Queensland, Australia. Through the risk management process and industry experience there were several significant risk areas Redpath identified with the construction of the gantry crane, foremost they included generic risks such as - - Working with suspended loads; - Slinging beams and columns which were all compounded by the confined spaces of an underground mine workshop environment. Redpath's solution? A hydraulically controlled beam manipulator - The Redigrip PSM (Precision Steel Manipulator). The Redigrip can - Lift I-Beams up to SWL 1.2 Tonnes - Achieve 360 Degree rotation - 40 Degree side tilt left and right - 140mm side shift - 180 degree primary tilt - 600mm of telescopic extension - And can reach over 8 metres The Redigrip was a finalist in both the Queensland Mining Industry Health & Safety Innovation Awards 2012 and for the National Safety Council of Australia's Safety Awards of Excellence 2012 for Best Solution of an OHS Workplace Risk (medium to large businesses). Glencore Graduate Program 2017 - Chris Gerard
Chris Gerard joined Glencore in 2008 as a full-time graduate after working as a vacation student during his university holidays. Chris is now a member of the senior leadership team for the technical services division at Liddell Coal Operations and oversees all technical operations, from mining engineers to computer system monitoring in trucks. Chris says the best part of the Glencore Graduate Program was being thrown in the deep end and the opportunity he was given to be involved in meaningful work. His advice to graduates is to seize every opportunity and take on as many roles as you can. “If I see opportunities, I put my hand up,” he says. “Whether the role comes up internationally or in a different stream in my field, I’d certainly be up for having a crack.”
