Canada’s First Quantum Minerals on Wednesday was hopeful of resolving a dispute with Zambia over a whopping 76.5 billion Zambian kwacha ($8.07 billion) bill for unpaid duties on imported mining equipment. Zambia has reduced “significant” tax assessments against it in the past, Chief Executive Philip Pascall said on a conference call with analysts. He declined to speculate on the possible outcome of Zambia’s review of the latest claim, which involves more than 23,000 documents and could take up … READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2018/03/22/zambia-slaps-canadian-mining-giant-with-8bn-bill-for-unpaid-import-duties Africanews on YouTube brings you a daily dose of news, produced and realised in Africa, by and for Africans. China has invested billions of dollars into the continent of Africa to build massive infrastructure projects in African countries. Much of this infrastructure is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, an estimated 1 trillion dollar plan to connect the country to trade routes all over the world. » Subscribe to NowThis World: http://go.nowth.is/World_Subscribe » Watch the Previous Episode: https://go.nowth.is/2LhNmtv While China’s Belt and Road Initiative was only proposed in 2013, the country’s first infrastructure project on the African continent was built decades ago. The TazaHra railway, completed in 1976, was built to connect copper mines in Zambia to Dar EH Salaam, Tanzania’s former capital. The TazHara railway was the first infrastructure project built on a pan-African scale. China’s Belt and Road projects will be designed to create new trade routes within and between African countries. In 2017, a Chinese firm opened a railway network in Kenya, connecting its capital Nairobi to the port city of Mombasa. There are already plans to extend this network into South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Many observers worry that African countries won’t be able to pay back these debts, placing them in what’s been called a quote “debt trap.” But others think that as African countries rise economically, they could actually have the upper hand by the time they negotiate payments back to China. This explains why African leaders have been so confident in calling Chinese investment a “win-win.” But is China’s investment in the continent actually a “win-win” as some African and Chinese leaders have said? OR is it just a new form of colonialism on a continent that’s experienced so much of it? In this episode, we’re examining China’s Belt and Road Initiative and what it might mean for Africa. Forty years ago, the Chinese laid a train track through Zambia. Bram Vermeulen travels through the African country by train to discover how the relationship between these countries is now. Zambia and China are old friends. When the African country became independent in 1964, the Asians were the first to queue to lend a helping hand. Communist China, itself still poor, took the lead in the construction of a railway that ran through Zambia and neighboring Tanzania to the port city of Dar es Salaam. Of course, that was not only out of kindness; the Chinese saw trade opportunities in the area. More than forty years later, it turns out that the railroad ran into a grandiose failure that cost China a lot of money - you can read more about this in this story by Sean van der Steen, with beautiful photographs. However, the Chinese presence in Zambia has become indispensable, Bram notes. He comes across them along the train route. For example, Chinese people run a copper mine, breed chickens on a large scale and have large factories. Zambians work on this economic activity, under Chinese bosses. Not everybody is happy with that. Bram visits a village where an explosives factory has exploded. The Chinese owners had not taken it so closely with the safety regulations. The incident is illustrative of the working methods of Chinese in Africa: care for the employees is subordinate to the profits. Also in a copper mine, it appears that the working conditions are far from ideal, and that employees openly complain about their low salary. Episode 5. A trail of Chinese Forty years ago, the Chinese built a railway through Zambia. The cooperation between China and African countries has been transformed and upgraded, that’s according to Wang Yi. The Chinese Foreign Minister recently completed his first trip of the year to 5 African nations, and stressed to his counterparts on the continent that 2017 marks a key year to implement the outcomes of the 2015 FOCAC summit in Johannesburg. Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania, the Republic of Congo and Nigeria all had a chance to interact with the Chinese foreign ministry this week as they charted the way forward for China-Africa relations over the next 12 months. So how do we measure the transformation in cooperation that the foreign minister mentioned? And what are the core outcomes of Wang Yi’s 2017 African Mission? Cobalt value has increased 70 percent since the beginning of the year. The last surprise in the markets, cobalt was a mine with 60 percent of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and limited reserves. Recently, with the incredible increase in mobile phone production and the popularity of electric cars, the price per tonne of cobalt has increased by 70 percent since January, reaching 55 thousand dollars. APPLE AND TRANSPORTATION Cobalt, one of the main components of batteries that run many technology products such as Apple devices and Tesla cars, is valuable because it is one of the most difficult to extract. It is stated that in 2016 only 93 thousand tons of cobalt was produced. Tesla and Apple became the star of a cobalt anda market with increased investment. According to experts, half of the cobalt produced is used in battery production and will rise to 60 percent by 2020. So the demand for cobalt will continue to increase rapidly. THE BIG BREAK OF RESERVES IN THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS REPUBLIC On the other hand, the lack of international standards for working conditions in mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the employment of child labor also cause cobalt production to be interrupted by frequent inspections. Apple temporarily stopped cobalt imports temporarily due to the working conditions in the country last month. Desiring to produce 500,000 electric cars next year, Tesla is attempting to buy cobalt from North America instead of Africa, but no country is in a position to compete with the Democratic Republic of the Congo to produce cobalt that will meet the growing demand.

Hospital’s staff quarters reduced to ashes. A 12 bed roomed staff quarters at St Paul’s Mission rural hospital some 60 kilometers north of Lupane town, was reduced to ashes with property worth over a $100 000 destroyed after a fire razed the building. There are suspicions that the fire could have been caused by an unattended candle light. It’s a case of one step forward and three steps backwards. When stakeholders constructed this staff cottage back then, there was hope that they had dealt with the accommodation problems at this clinic. F...

Just under three years after some striking mineworkers were fatally shot by police in North West Province's Marikana area, the Marikana Report was recently released by President Jacob Zuma. Since it is a very detailed document, President Zuma touched on key elements of this Report's recommendations in order to address the concerns of the South African public in general, and those of the families of those who died during the tragedy in particular. But, is the Marikana incident likely to help accelerate the transformation of the mining sector? Capitol Visitor Center, Room HVC 210 Washington, DC 20515 Friday, September 18, 2015 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm As President Obama prepares to host Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 24-25, 2015, the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) will hold a hearing to examine the critical human rights and rule of law issues that deserve frank and robust discussions during the planned state visit. It has been another bad year for human rights in China. In its forthcoming Annual Report, scheduled for release in October, the CECC will provide documentation of the Chinese government and Communist Party’s efforts to silence dissent, suppress human rights advocacy, and control civil society — efforts that are broader in scope than any other period documented since the Commission started issuing Annual Reports in 2002. Chinese authorities have targeted for arrest and harassment human rights defenders; media outlets and journalists; human rights lawyers; Tibetans and Uyghurs; religious groups; nongovernmental organizations (NGOs); intellectuals and democracy advocates; and supporters of “universal suffrage” in Hong Kong. The CECC Political Prisoner Database has case information on over 1,300 political and religious prisoners currently known or believed to be detained or imprisoned. There are many important issues, to include security and economic concerns, that should be on the agenda during the Chinese President’s visit. So too should human rights. It is increasingly clear that there are direct links between concrete improvements in human rights and the rule of law in China and the security and prosperity of the United States. Witnesses will address a variety of human rights developments and will make policy recommendations in the context of the upcoming summit. WITNESSES: Teng Biao, Chinese human rights lawyer, Harvard University Law School Visiting Fellow, and Co-founder, the Open Constitution Initiative Xiao Qiang, Founder and Editor-in-Chief, China Digital Times Yang Jianli, President, Initiatives for China/Citizen Power for China Wei Jingsheng, Chairman, Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition Shohret Hoshur, journalist reporting on news in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region for Radio Free Asia Ethan Gutmann, China analyst and author of The Slaughter: Mass Killings, Organ Harvesting, and China's Secret to Its Dissident Problem

Three people including a child have been wounded during a shootout between police and armed robbers at Emperors Palace Casino in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, on Sunday. Details surrounding the incident are still sketchy but eyewitnesses on the scene say a gang of around 20 people were involved in the robbery attempt. Officials have however confirmed that two suspects have been shot and wounded including a five-year-old girl who was in the vicinity and got hit by a stray bullet. Police are now examining the scene of the shootout and they believe there's a possibility that suspects may still be inside the casino after guns were discovered in the toilet. The gang of men reportedly arrived this morning at the premises in an attempt to rob the casino but they didn't realise that police had received a tip-off and had been waiting for them. Police say when the suspects spotted them, they tried to flee. The tyres of one of the two vehicles the suspects had been travelling in, was punctured as the driver smashed through the boom gate. The would-be robbers then opened fire on police and the officers retaliated. At least 10 suspects have so far been arrested more are on the run. The casino has been temporarily closed to the public while detectives continue with their investigation.

A spear thrower is a simple tool that allows the user to throw a spear further than by hand alone. It is a small length of wood with a hook in the end that fits into a notch in the back of the spear. The extra power and distance gained by the thrower is due to the extra leverage it gives. I cut a small branch with a minor branch coming off the side. I shaped the minor branch into a spur to fit into the end of the spear. The thrower was about 65 cm long. For the spear, I cut a thin sapling approximately 2 m long and about 1.5 cm thick. I carved a cup in the end of the spear for the spur to fit into. Then I bound the back of the spear with bark fiber to prevent the wood from splitting. The head of the spear was simply charred in the fire and scrapped against a rock to sharpen it (during practice the head regularly breaks so only a sharpened tip is used to save work). To use the spear thrower, the spur of the thrower is inserted into the cup of the spear. The spear and thrower are held at about shoulder height. The thrower is quickly flicked forward and the spear propelled towards the target. As the spear leaves the thrower it bends slightly storing energy until it jumps of the spur. During flight, the flexible spear wobbles and oscillates paradoxically giving the spear some stability in flight. The throws in the video show what can be done in one afternoon of practice (my arm got sore and I wanted to start on other projects). I hit the target a few times at a distance 15 m. It is more powerful than a spear thrown by hand alone but is difficult to learn. The spear I made could have been a fraction lighter and so would have greater speed. Another improvement would be to add flights to the spear so it would be more accurate and fly straighter (like an atlatl). The extra energy gained from a Woomera's (Australian spear thrower) use has been calculated as 4 times that of compound bow (Wikipedia). It's easy to make (this took less than a day) but requires lots of training to become accurate. The World's Largest Cut Emerald Is To Be Sold At Auction The Emerald Unguentarium The “Emerald Unguentarium,” a 2,860-carat (20.18 oz) emerald vase carved in 1641, is on display in the Imperial Treasury, Vienna, Austria. The Patricia Emerald The “Patricia Emerald,” discovered in Colombia in 1920 and named after the mine owner’s daughter, is a 632-carat (4.46 oz) uncut emerald. It resides in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Mogul Mughal Emerald The “Mogul Mughal Emerald,” a 217.80-carat (1.54 oz) carved emerald, was sold at Christie’s for $2.2 million in 2001. It now resides in the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, Qatar. The Sacred Emerald Buddha The “Sacred Emerald Buddha,” a 2,620-carat (18.48 oz) emerald statue, was carved from a 3,600-carat (25.4 oz) African emerald crystal in 2006. The Bahia Emerald The Bahia Emerald is an 840 lb. stone discovered in Bahia, Brazil, in 2001. This stone reportedly contains over 180,000 carats of emeralds (approximately 79.38 lb.), including the largest single shard of emerald ever found, described as “the size of a man’s thigh”. The events and personalities involved with this gemstone since its discovery have inspired much speculation, and its ownership is currently in dispute. The LKA and Stephenson Emeralds When the “LKA Emerald” was unearthed in 1984 in the Hiddenite area of North Carolina, it was considered the largest intact emerald found in North America. At 1,686.3 carats, it currently ranks as the 2nd largest. The name “LKA” comes from the company that owned the mine at the time. The “Stephenson Emerald,”found in the same region in 1969, weighs 1,438 cts. It, too, was considered the largest North American emerald until the discovery of the LKA emerald. This stone was named after John A. D. Stephenson, a 19thcentury researcher of Hiddenite area gems. Both of these gems were displayed in the American Museum of Natural History in the 1990s and are currently for sale.
