Ancient Mining Techniques[History Documentary]HD

45:14
Ancient mining techniques go well back into our history – well back into ourprehistory, in fact. As we progressed through the Stone Age, with more and more sophisticated tools and weapons being designed and developed, so too,our need for more and better raw materials for these implements. Stone and flint led to copper, then bronze, gold, silver, iron… all in the name of progress, war, technology, vanity or greed. In fact, it’s ironic (pun intended) that the substance prized and even mined by our ancient ancestors for some of the earliest stone tools and weapons – flint – was later a hindrance encountered by Classical miners – who were in many cases also Classical minors – in gold mining galleries described by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD as “thought to be the hardest thing that exists, except greed for gold, which is the most stubborn of all things. Gold Mining On The Yuba River

09:20
Gold Mining On The Yuba River The Ancient American River, Ancient Yuba River, Ancient Calaveras River, Ancient Mokelumne River, Ancient Tuolumne River, Ancient Magalia Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic Cateract Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic American River and the Ancient Jura River (from the Jurassic Period), are plotted in detail on Big Tens California Gold Map 5. The present-day rivers bearing the same names as their ancient rivers are also shown. The Ancient Rivers of Gold in northern California are from the Tertiary Period. The Tertiary rivers existed millions of years ago and many of them had large quantities of gold within their gravels. Because of that, they are known as the "Ancient Rivers of Gold." Each ancient river is discussed below. Information on this page is based on the classic work of Waldemar Lindgren of the United States Geological Survey and by study of Big Tens California Gold Map 5, which shows the relationship of the ancient rivers to landmarks, such as roads, creeks and towns in the region. These now-dry Tertiary rivers are thought to be a prime source of the gold found in many of the rivers and streams of the Mother Lode region of northern California. The ancient rivers are discontinuous and sometimes follow tortuous routes. They have been altered by volcanic activity, erosion, and in some instances portions of the rivers have been covered by lava. Much of the region underwent extreme volcanic eruptions. Volcanic flows have been found up to 4,000 feet deep. Volcanic flows were up to 60 miles in length. Portions of an ancient river may be found at ground level or near the top of a mountain, or on the side of a mountain, or buried. Early prospectors found portions of the ancient rivers and worked them for their rich gold content. Later, mining companies used hydraulic mining or drift mining techniques to recover the gold. In hydraulic mining, water under pressure is directed to, for example, the side of a ravine to dislodge the gravels and send the material to the sluices where the gold is recovered. The equipment that was used (called a "monitor" or "giant") was similar to a very large hose nozzle. Geologic reports speak of gravel deposits up to 250 feet deep with gold deposits interspersed at various levels within the gravels. Some of the gravels of the ancient rivers of gold have been cemented together over time. Smaller materials between the larger gravels have bound the larger gravels together. Drift mining is used in those instances to follow the channel underneath the volcanic covering. In drift mining, tunnels are driven in bedrock underneath the channels and when the channels are reached, the richest stratum, resting immediately on the bedrock, is extracted by underground mining methods and then washed at the mouth of the tunnel. Many miles of the ancient rivers are still un-worked and may be very rich in gold.

Old Gold Mine With A Massive Quartz Vein

06:07
An old gold mine with a massive quartz vein. A 100 meter adit with nice looking quartz found in a schistose rock. Some sulphides were found. One of our current properties has to be reached by traveling through a portion of this claim which is how we found the mine. The area has mass amounts of mineralization and is in a silitified and pyritized fracture zone 11km long and several kilometers wide in BC, Canada, this zone carries multiple gold, gemstone, mineral and VMS deposits. There are hundreds of heavily mineralized outcrops and multiple large and smaller deposits. Some mined over a hundred years ago, some are new discoveries. Host rock in the area consists schists, granodiorite and quartz feldspar, these host a schist panel which has multiple outcrops with quartz veins with free mill gold along with multiple sulphides over a huge zone. The Secret World Of Gold | Gold Mining - Geographic History

42:41
The Secret World Of Gold | Gold Mining - Geographic History. It is impossible to know the exact date that humans first began to mine gold, but some of the oldest known gold artifacts were found in the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria. The graves of the necropolis were built between 4700 and 4200 BC, indicating that gold mining could be at least 7000 years old. A group of German and Georgian archaeologists claims the Sakdrisi site in southern Georgia, dating to the 3rd or 4th millennium BC, may be the world's oldest known gold mine. This movie is the last remaining part of footage from an old video cassette that I owned. I believe that it is still available from the Empire Mines State Park. I do not own the copyright to this movie and this is being posted here under YouTube's Guidelines for informational and teaching purposes. Then I added pictures on my own of the Malakoff State park from days gone past when mining was active in the area to the end of this movie. This is a great addition to this hydraulic mining playlist, so watch history being taught from long ago & then learn & enjoy.

Prospecting A Newly Logged Area & Some Old Gold Mines

09:45
We have recently staked this area to evaluate the mineral potential. Recent logging has exposed loads of new bedrock. Several locations were found with minerlization including a new quarry used to build access roads. Part of the property has several old mines including an old prospectors pit, 6 meter deep shaft, an incline shaft 33 meters deep and a big quarry were we have recently been removing material for a bulk sample (shown in another video). The video shows some quick exploration of the area to get a view of how much bedrock is exposed from logging. And shows some of the workings. There will be more videos in this are soon to come as we only show 1/5th of the entire property in the video. Assays and preliminary testing were done on some showings and the results are listed throughout the video. Want to support us? Incredibly Rare Wooden Ore Cart Found Inside A Mine!

22:15
Well, we certainly don’t come across something like this every day when we’re out exploring… Just like the abandoned steam engine we featured in another video, this is one of those incredible once in a lifetime finds. There are precious few of these wooden ore carts left in existence and even fewer that can still be found at an abandoned mine rather than rotting away in someone’s backyard. Fortunately, this mine is not marked on any topographic maps and it is in a very remote area of the desert. I believe this is what has protected it from the vermin that ransack these sites to sell the historical artifacts on eBay. Were it not for these circumstances, the wooden ore cart would have undoubtedly disappeared a long time ago. We have found bits and pieces of the metal frames of wooden ore carts in and around some of the old (1800s) mines in California’s “Mother Lode” region. So, obviously, they were used there. However, the wood has long since rotted away and whatever was left of the abandoned carts has disintegrated with time and exposure to the elements. If you consider it, wooden ore carts actually made a lot of sense for the miners in the past that were venturing out over steep mountains and down deep canyons, often over little more than primitive trails. Rather than needing to use a team of mules to haul a backbreakingly heavy metal ore cart up a sheer cliff to a mine, the miners could have hauled out the relatively lightweight (except for the wheels) components and then assembled the carts from the plentiful trees growing around the mine. And, as was mentioned in the video, if something breaks, the miners could just cut another tree down and repair the cart. From the look of it, the wooden ore cart at this mine in the video may have likewise been constructed from the trees found around the mine. As for the mine itself, which was almost an afterthought for me after finding the wooden ore cart, it wasn’t a huge mine, but I thought it was an interesting little mine all the same, no? The flickering effect created by the LEDs on the video drove me nuts when I was editing it, but focusing on the features of the mine, I liked the way the mine twisted around until it reached that small raise and the winze. Given how clean this first section of the mine was, I can only conclude that that section is the one that was worked most recently and the area behind the skip car (where the rails for the ore carts disappeared) was driven during the early days of the mine and then abandoned. I don’t blame the miners for abandoning that section of the mine given how soft the material there was. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

Ancient gold smelting rare today. extract recovery process of refining gold to remove any impurities

10:32
►► http://www.goldextractionprocess.com Smelting of rare antique gold. The process of refining gold to remove any impurities that may be found intermixed with the noble metal is an ancient practice that has long been employed by diverse cultures. One of the earliest gold refining equipments employed by ancient metallurgists was the blast furnace – by then a rudimentary structure built with clay, stone, or roughly hewn rocks which were fed with wood or an assortment of biofuels derived from the dried fecal matter of animals. The blast furnace was used in tandem with the crucible, one of the oldest and perhaps still widely used metallurgical instruments to this day. With the methods of gold refining being perfected through the decades, even rustic objects such as clay pots and later on, cast iron equipment were employed in the quest for purer and finer examples of gold. Prospecting Old Mines On A Railway Grade With Au, Ag, Cu & Zn Ore

15:10
Prospecting two mine adits on an old railway grade. High grade gold, silver, copper and zinc ore from sampling. We also look at the old narrow gauge railway grade, an old drill hole and an mineralized outcropping. The mines are about 130 years old and struck along an old narrow gauge railway which was used in transporting high grade ore from another mine to a smelter 10km away. The old railway has multiple switchbacks up the mountain. The area has mass amounts of mineralization and is in a silitified and pyritized fracture zone 11km long and several kilometers wide in BC Canada, which carries multple gold, gemstone, minerals and VMS deposits. There are hundreds of heavily mineralized outcrops and multiple large and smaller deposits. Some mined over a hundred years ago, some are new discoveries. This mountain has over 2 dozen old workings and new showing with free gold and sulphide deposits. Three assay were we test four four elements were done and a single 35 element ICP assay was done at the old mine dump. This video was made possible by our patrons listed below! Free Gold, Silver, Copper & Minerals From Mine Slag!

02:59
Imagine finding high grade free gold, silver & copper ore. Then finding those same elements in something that's already been refined? Old refining techniques at this onsite refinery only yielded as high as 60% recovery rate for this sulphide ore that was mined. Some of these elements are found as free mill and some appear to still be in there sulphide form. We found a small waste pile of mine slag while gold prospecting one of our properties in BC, near an old mine on one of our hardrock mining claims. About 3-5% would be graded about the same as the assay done at the end of the video. These are left in a pile near the old mine dump. Pieces of almost pure copper can still be found as melted nuggets. Slag is the glass like by product left over after a desired such as gold, silver, copper, lead....ect.. metal has been separated or smelted from its natural ore. Slag is usually a mixture of metal oxides and silicon dioxide. However, slags can contain metal sulfides and elemental metals. Just for fun an assay was done on a small sample. Yeilding some good gold, silver, copper and lead values the results are at the end of the video! This video was made possible by our patrons listed below! Historic Gold Mine & Mill Deep In The Forest – Part 1

16:27
This mine was once made up of several smaller claims and the earliest records I can find on those date back to 1867. However, by the turn of the last century (1900), these appear to have all been consolidated into the large operation seen in the video. Given the large number of adits and trenches, the number of collapsed structures (I only showed a small number of them in the video), the large stamp mill and the need for a cemetery, this was obviously a significant mining community during its heyday. The guys I explored this site with are the Gold Country Explorers and credit goes to them for locating it. Gold Country Explorers find and post pictures of some really awesome places. You can find a link to their material here: https://www.facebook.com/Gold-Country-Explorers-850167371691275/ To see one of those monster Fairbanks-Morse stationary engines running (and it is worth seeing), check out the great video at the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_0xifuTqVA An early (1800s) California State Mining Bureau report had this to say about the mill at the site: “A 20-stamp mill was located on the east side of the creek, with 900-pound stamps driven by a Knight wheel under 94’ of head from a 1,650’ long ditch; only one battery of stamps was reported as being in running order.” A later report (1900s) adds these additional details about the mill: “The mill at this time is described as possessing a 50-ton daily capacity, with a jaw crusher, 10 stamps, and ball mill in closed circuit with a Dorr classifier. Riffles were set below the stamps, and amalgamation plates below the ball mill. Three Fagergren flotation cells were followed by two Kraut cleaner-cells. A 200-hp diesel engine drove a generator to supply electric power, and a 440 cfm compressor was driven by a 100-hp motor.” Now, you may notice a discrepancy here as the first description mentions twenty stamps and the second description mentions ten stamps. As you saw in the video, the ruins of the mill at the mine site now has ten stamps. So, does that mean that an earlier mill was torn down and replaced by a new mill? Possibly. However, in the picture in the video, which was taken in 1937, a flume can be clearly seen leading toward the mill. Presumably, it was still being used when the photograph was taken because it appears to be maintained and in good condition. So, perhaps the mill was remodeled or rehabbed and ten stamps were taken away? The first report mentions that only one battery was in working order… In further support of this idea is the manufacturer’s stamp on the stamp mill itself. Union Iron Works of San Francisco ceased to be an independent company in 1902 when it was absorbed into a conglomerate called the United States Shipbuilding Company. This, therefore, dates the stamp mill to the time of the original report and would seem to suggest that it is the same mill. The last records of work being done at this mine date to 1939. You can perhaps better understand how everything is laid out at this abandoned gold mine by knowing that I did not backtrack or meander at all during the video, but continued in a steady downstream direction. So, the order in which objects of interest appear in the video are the order in which they are laid out across this sprawling site. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind...

Historic Gold Mine & Mill Deep In The Forest - Part 2

18:01
There is quite a lot to this abandoned mine site and so while I found a fair amount when I was wandering around on my own, I still missed interesting pieces of mining equipment that Michael showed me the next day. Further, I’m quite confident that there is plenty more scattered around in the brush or underneath the ruined buildings that we both missed. Eventually, forest fires will roar through all of the areas where these abandoned mines we document are located. When that happens, many hidden adits and pieces of metal equipment that were hidden away in brush will be revealed. It certainly isn’t in any way worth having a forest fire for, but it is an interesting side effect. As I mentioned in the prior video in this series, credit for our trip to this mine site goes to Gold Country Explorers. They get out in the forests (mostly in California’s Gold Country) and have an uncanny knack for tracking down stamp mills and other impressive elements of our industrial history – not to mention, a fair number of adits too! Check out their site – they post some great pictures on there: https://www.facebook.com/Gold-Country-Explorers-850167371691275/ It felt good to discover that adit that the Forest Service missed near the top of the hill. They are pretty thorough, but some things are not easy to spot in the forest and many adits are not marked on the topographic map. As I mentioned in the video, I’d like to show you the portal and how this adit was essentially hiding in plain sight. However, if I post that, the Forest Service will be able to find it pretty easily and will be out there as soon as the snow melts to gate it. So, I reluctantly declined to share the view from the outside. Like I said in the video, we need to preserve some of our industrial history outside of a museum. I also think it is important to maintain at least something in the way of the spirit of adventure and the excitement of discovery in our increasingly fearful and risk-averse society. The site of the shaft that we visited toward the end of the video was so badly degraded that I mistakenly speculated that it was an adit (easy to do when there were adits all over the place). However, my subsequent research demonstrated that it was, in fact, a shaft. I could not find many records on it, but the shaft dropped down for almost four hundred feet and apparently had two levels to tap into the hard rock gold veins underground. The large waste rock pile all around that section is supposed to be from the shaft. I’m not sure how the ore was transported from the shaft to the mill, but I’d be curious to know. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! If you’ve ever wondered what a gold mine looks like from the side then this video is for you! And while we’re at it I’ll step you through every stage of how this awesome diorama was built. The techniques used to build this diorama can be used whether you’re building a huge model railroad or just a tiny little master piece of a model, you can also use these techniques for war gaming scenery however when it comes to sealing the scenery with Woodland Scenics Scenic Cement I’d use it undiluted for extra strength. The hot wire tools I use in the video are supplied from ‘The Hot Wire Foam Factory’ and I’m giving you my 100% honest opinion that these tools are absolutely fantastic! This diorama idea has been on the cards for over 12 months and it was not until I started to use the hot wire tools that I was able to get the results I was after! I highly recommend these tools! If you down here reading these comments…. THANK YOU. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the videos and don’t forget that if you’d like to help support these videos you can go over to patreon and donate to the channel, I have some perks for different levels of donation. The music used throughout the video is from Epidemic Sound using their YouTube Subscription License and the intro tune is licensed through Premium Beat.
