12 Biggest Mines

07:39
These huge open-pits in the ground can either be called mines or quarry and they give us amazing things like gold, silver, and copper! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. The Barrick Goldstrike Mine Owned and operated by Barrick Gold, which is the largest gold mining company, the goldstrike mine happens to be the largest gold mine in all of North America. Located in Eureka County, Nevada, the goldstrike mine is comprised of 3 different mines, the larger of the three is the Betze-Post open-pit mine, the Meikle, and the Rodeo, both of which are found underground. This complex of mines is also the largest Carlin-type mine in the world. First opened way back in 1986, the mine not only produces gold but silver as well, which just so happens to be where Nevada gets its famous nickname, the “Silver State”, from. 6. The Oyu Tolgoi Mine The name for this combined open-pit mining project translates to Turquoise Hill and is located in the southern region of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. The mines that are filled with gold-copper ore deposits are actually relatively new and were only recently discovered back in 2001 by the Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines. It’s expected that the mine will reach full capacity in the year 2021. It’s believed that this mine contains around 2,700,000 tons of copper and another 1.7 million ounces of gold. Like with all other mines, the environmental impact that the Oyu Tolgoi mine is often criticized since it is located in such a dry area and uses more than one billion gallons of water each month. 5. The Chuquicamata (choo-kee-kə-mah-tə) Mine In terms of volume, the chuquicamata mine, or the “Chuqui” mine as it’s more commonly known is the second deepest open-pit mine on the planet. This mine can be found in the northern area of Chile where its main export is that of copper. This has been the country’s main export and staple that is crucial to how the people of Chile rely on an income and it’s here that the metal is called “Chile’s salary” ever since they became dependent on the copper industry back when the first World War ended. Copper actually makes up about a third of all the country’s foreign trade but that 33 percent was once at a high percentage of 75% a few years earlier. 4. The Dionysos Marble Quarry This quarry lies on the Penteli Mountain in the town and municipality of Dionysos, Attica in Greece. It’s here that the world famous Dionysos pentelicon marble is extracted. The quarry has been opened for more than a 100 years and it was back in 1949 that it was owned by the Dionysos Marble Company. The quarry currently has 2 underground sites and 9 above ground sites where the marble is extracted. The marble here is protected by law and is solely used for the Acropolis Restoration Project and other ancient buildings in Athens. 3. The Udachnaya Pipe The name of this open-pit mine literally translates to lucky pipe and can be found right outside of the Arctic Circle in Sakha Republic, Russia. This mine was discovered way back in June of 1955 and is believed to contain around 225.8 million carats of diamonds with an estimated 10.4 million carats harvested annually. The diamond mine was taken over by the Russian diamond company Alrosa back in 2010. This is mine also happens to be the third deepest open-pit mine in the world at a depth of 1,970 feet. 2. The Mir Mine Occasionally called the Mirny Mine, this was once a former open-pit diamond mine that is located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. This mine reaches a depth of 1,722 feet deep, along with a diameter of 3,900 feet making it one of the largest excavated holes to ever exist. The mine was first discovered back in June of 1955 by a group of three Soviet geologists. It proved to be rather difficult as it seemed like there was always one problem arising after another. The cold winter months provided harsh conditions that slowed production, the mine suffered a flood in the 90’s, and surface operations would cease in June of 2001 with underground operations still moving forward until the whole mine was permanently shut down in 2004. 1. The Bingham Canyon Mine Known by the locals at the Kennecott Copper Mine, the Bingham Canyon Mine is located in the southwest region of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. This massive chasm is known for being the largest man-made excavation in all of the world. Owned by the Rio Tinto Group, the production of this mine was started an astonishing 110-years ago and since then the mine measures at being 2.5 miles long, 0.6 miles deep, and covers a distance of 1,900 acres. The mine endured a tremendous landslide back in 2013 and then a smaller one later that same year.

Asia Cement under growing pressure over expanded open pit mines in Taroko

02:18
The month before his death, Chi Po-lin filmed open pit mines operated by Asia Cement Corporation in Taroko National Park, which he observed were even larger than when he captured them five years ago. The images have prompted many legislators and environmental groups to call for Asia Cement''s mining license there to be suspended until the firm submits a satisfactory environmental impact assessment. On May 15, Chi Po-lin caught these shocking images of bare, ashen mountain tops while flying over open pit mines in Taroko National Park operated by Asia Cement Corporation.Compared to five years ago, when Chi shot the open pit mines for his film “Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above,” the photos from last month clearly show that the quarries have been expanded, setting off widespread controversy. A petition started by more than 60 environmental protection groups to revoke Asia Cement’s mining rights in the region has already collected close to 70,000 signatures.Huang Ching-tingCitizen of the Earth, TaiwanLast year in 2016, the company’s export sales accounted for 36 percent of its production. So do we have to let our own environment be destroyed and then go and sell the product overseas? DPP Legislator Lin Shu-fen decried the fact that Asia Cement’s mining license in Taroko was extended for another 20 years this past March, despite the company having never submitted an environmental impact assessment during a half century of operations at the site. Environmental protection groups and legislators from both major parties have joined calls for an extraordinary legislative session to amend the law and bring Asia Cement’s mines under the current regulatory framework.Alex HuangPresidential Office SpokesmanEver since the new administration took office, we, including the Interior Ministry, have been doing our utmost to push our comprehensive plan on land use and conservation. And in fact the Cabinet has already decided that Taiwan’s mining industry must undergo systematic environmental impact assessments. The Presidential Office has not specifically commented on the Asia Cement case. But the Economics Ministry has stated that if the amendments to the Mining Act are passed, Asia Cement will have to make up for the assessments it has missed.

Hundreds march against plans to build open-pit mining project to extract iron ore

02:03
Several hundred people marched in Uruguay's capital Montevideo on Friday against plans to build a massive open-pit mining project to extract iron ore. Protesters chanted, clapped and held up large banners as they walked down Montevideo's main avenue towards Independence Plaza. The Uruguayan parliament weeks ago approved a controversial mining law that will enable the private mining company, Aratiri, to build five open-pit mines in the small South American country. Opponents of the project say they're concerned about its environmental impact on the soil and the use of chemicals and explosives. "I was born and raised in the countryside. I was born in the zone where today they want to build the Aratiri mine. We're talking about destroying gold (comparing their agricultural land to gold). Our food is like our gold," said Alvaro Jaume, a demonstrator who lives in area where the Aratiri mine project is planned to be built. According to figures from Aratiri, they will export an average of 18 (m) million tons of iron ore per year, which would make Uruguay the world's eighth largest exporter of the mineral. "This project is really a monstrous project," said Alfredo Dante, a resident of the area where Aratiri mine project is planned to be built. Dante called the project "highly destructive" because of the large number of chemical explosive he said will be used for the ore extraction. "For a country like Uruguay, this project is crazy," he added. According to Aratiri, the iron will be extracted by magnetic means without chemicals. The mining project will cover the departments of Durazno, Florida, Lavalleja, Treinta y Tres and Rocha. It is the largest project of its kind in South America. Aratiri is part of the Zamin Ferrous multinational group, with corporate headquarters and trading operations in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to Zamin group's website. Citizen Voices Matter - Sustainable Economic Alternatives to Open-Pit Mining

04:19
People in northern Wisconsin have worked to create a sustainable economy in the state's iconic Northwoods. But their livelihoods could be threatened by environmental damage caused by a proposed open-pit iron mine. This is the story of Hermit Creek, Landis and Steven Spickerman's organic, family farm, which is located near the proposed mine site. In 2013, public officials ignored the community's objections when they passed a law deregulating iron mining in the state, but you can help to make these voices be heard. At the center of the debate over the use or protection of our natural resources is a coveted, 21-mile iron ore deposit that lies in Wisconsin's Penokee Hills. The Gogebic Iron Range stretches between the community of Upson and Mineral Lake, and includes the headwaters of the Bad River, a beautiful, pristine and sacred river that supplies the ground and surface waters of a watershed that reaches across Ashland and Iron counties, the Bad River Tribe of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians' reservation and Lake Superior's largest wild rice beds in the Kakagon Sloughs. Lake Superior is the world's largest freshwater lake. The wooded hills and complex watershed not only supply the drinking water for private wells, but also are the basis for the agricultural, forestry and tourism industries. Those who are working for a sustainable economic future and to protect the Bad River watershed see an open-pit iron mine as something that may bring short-term jobs, but will cause long-term damage to the region. A mine is not a done deal, however. Please share this film and help others learn about this vision for a future economy that can sustain this and future generations. Learn more about the proposed iron mine in Wisconsin's Penokee Hills: http://midwestadvocates.org/issues-actions/actions/mining_in_the_penokees/ Visit Hermit Creek Farm on the web at hermitcreekfarm.com Please donate to Midwest Environmental Advocate's legal effort and support the work of our attorneys who are a part of the legal team for the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians who are using the power of the law to save the Penokee Hills. Produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, this fascinating movie looks at copper and copper mining in the 1960s, when the American mines were at peak production and financial troubles loomed. The film looks at the future of mining, including the development of efficiencies to keep mines in business. Open pit mining techniques are shown, with a focus on the Southwest. At 2:00, Bingham Canyon and the Utah Mining Company pit (also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine) is seen. At 2:40, various open pit mines are seen which use either trucks or trains to remove ore. Although they are not named, it's likely that one of them is the Phelps-Dodge mine at Bisbee, Arizona. At 5:40, exploratory core drilling is shown. At 6:30, exploration programs are shown including at 6:43, an engineering team that maps mine development. Various drill systems are seen at 9:00, including the rotary drill. At 10:30, preparations are seen towards using explosives with the burying of dynamite and detonators for excavation. At 12:12, loading of explosives is seen with an emphasis on safe handling. At 14:51, a cage drill is shown in use allowing rocks to be drilled in the field (without being moved by shovels) for explosive removal. At 16:00, a small 4.5 yard bucket shovel is shown being used to move blast debris. At 16:00, a 6-yard loading shovel is seen. At 17:49, overburden waste from the pit is loaded on a train so that it can be moved and dumped at a remote area. At 18:50, a 13-yard shovel is seen in use with a large truck also in use. As the narrator explains, these large size equipment is needed to lower unit costs of copper, and are an economic necessity given the modern financial conditions. At 19:52, the motorized wheel principle of new types of mining trucks is seen, and the narrator comments that next generation trucks will carry over 100 tons of ore. At 22:55, a grader is seen working the mine roads, and the narrator comments about how tires wear out so quickly on the job that they account for up to 1% of mining costs. At 24:30, railroad trains are shown on the move at a mine, moving 60-125 ton per car loads. The narrator comments further on the use of railroads in pit mining. At 26:30, a large shovel is seen loading a train, sprinkling the loads with water to hold down dust. The large boulders in the loads make this type of work dangerous. At 27:16, ore loads are dumped into a crusher at a mill site. At 27:40, a rail waste dump into a slag pile is seen. At 28:00, a train-based grader is used to clear tracks of debris. The narrator notes that the mining railroads are some of the busiest in the USA and the world. At 28:44, new tracks are installed due to various demands, and mechanized railroad ballast systems are used for fast track installation. At 31:20, a skip hoist is seen being used to take ore from a deep, small pit to the surface. At 32:50, a series of leeching ponds is seen, with water percolated through the ponds to precipitate copper. At 34:00, a machine shop is seen at the mine, providing repair and maintenance services at the mine. At 35:40, a heavy repair part is unloaded at the mine using a power shovel. At 36:00, a research laboratory is seen at work, developing new uses of copper in the atomic and other industries. At 36:40, the IBM Ramac computer is seen. The IBM 305 RAMAC was the first commercial computer that used a moving-head hard disk drive (magnetic disk storage) for secondary storage. The film ends with a shot of a heap of pennies, with the narrator noting that the industry is working hard to expand production to fulfill future needs. The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine, is extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world and produced more copper than any other mine in history – more than 19 million tons. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (970 m) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). Marion Power Shovel Company was an American firm that designed, manufactured and sold steam shovels, power shovels, blast hole drills, excavators, and dragline excavators. The company was a major supplier of shovels for the construction of the Panama Canal. Founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, the company grew through sales and acquisitions throughout the 20th century. The company changed its name to Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the industry's change from steam power to diesel power. Mining restoration centre

04:52
The scale of mining activities today is greater than ever but so are its environmental and social impacts. Over the past few decades mining has contributed to millions of hectares of land degradation worldwide. Open-pit mining transforms productive landscapes into ruined wastelands with disastrous consequences for biodiversity, climate, water and soil resources and the livelihoods and health of local people. Yet this is a solvable problem. We have developed and tested a complete set of planning tools and restoration technologies which can return mining sites to full ecological functioning and productivity. These tools include next-generation technologies for seedling nurseries, genebank resources for climate-smart agroforestry species selection, investment decision analysis and institutional arrangements for restoration and eco-friendly income generation. We therefore propose the establishment of a global centre of excellence for mining restoration. The centre will implement restoration projects in selected developing countries and work with a range of stakeholders to develop policies and practices on the ground. This could kick-start restoration around the world not only of mining sites but wherever human activities have damaged our planet.

Fenghua Dust Suppression System Open cast mining dust control

00:21
In a open mining site, wind is a silent thief, taking large percentages of coal dust from piles, conveyors, and loading areas. It can also cause environmental issues that can lead to lawsuits and major profit loss. Our line of Dust suppression system are the perfect solution to any dust control issue and have many application options. Mobile units can be quickly towed to key issue areas through out the day while stationary units can be mounted in high dust areas (such as conveyor systems or loading zones) and controlled remotely.

A Typical Day in an Open Cast Coal Mine / Coal Seam Fire / Coal Dust / Mine Tour

01:34
A day spent in an open cast coal mine in SCCl during our Mine tour. usually in an OCP ( open cast coal mine ) dusts and smokes are seen clearly. A coal seam fire or mine fire is the underground smouldering of a coal deposit, often in a coal mine. Such fires have economic, social and ecological impacts. They are often started by lightning, grass, or forest fires, and are particularly insidious because they continue to smoulder underground after surface fires have been extinguished, sometimes for many years, before flaring up and restarting forest and brush fires nearby. They propagate in a creeping fashion along mine shafts and cracks in geologic structures. Coal fires are a serious health and safety hazard, affecting the environment by releasing toxic fumes, reigniting grass, brush, or forest fires, and causing subsidence of surface infrastructure such as roads, pipelines, electric lines, bridge supports, buildings and homes. Whether started by humans or by natural causes, coal seam fires continue to burn for decades or even centuries until either the fuel source is exhausted, a permanent groundwater table is encountered, the depth of the burn becomes greater than the ground’s capacity to subside and vent, or humans intervene. Because they burn underground, coal seam fires are extremely difficult and costly to extinguish, and are unlikely to be suppressed by rainfall. There are strong similarities between coal fires and peat fires. Across the world, thousands of underground coal fires are burning at any given moment. The problem is most acute in industrializing, coal-rich nations such as China. Global coal fire emissions are estimated to cause 40 tons of mercury to enter the atmosphere annually, and to represent three percent of the world's annual CO2 emissions. Hence These seam fires need to be controlled., which can be done in various ways. in this video its done by water spraying. Hope you guys like it, comment and subscribe.
