What is OPEN-PIT MINING? What does OPEN-PIT MINING mean? OPEN-PIT MINING meaning - OPEN-PIT MINING definition - OPEN-PIT MINING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Open-pit, open-cast or open cut mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunneling into the earth, such as long wall mining. Open-pit mines are used when deposits of commercially useful minerals or rocks are found near the surface; that is, where the overburden (surface material covering the valuable deposit) is relatively thin or the material of interest is structurally unsuitable for tunnelling (as would be the case for sand, cinder, and gravel). For minerals that occur deep below the surface—where the overburden is thick or the mineral occurs as veins in hard rock—underground mining methods are used to extract the valued material. Open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone are commonly referred to as "quarries." Open-pit mines are typically enlarged until either the mineral resource is exhausted, or an increasing ratio of overburden to ore makes further mining uneconomic. When this occurs, the exhausted mines are sometimes converted to landfills for disposal of solid wastes. However, some form of water control is usually required to keep the mine pit from becoming a lake, if the mine is situated in a climate of considerable precipitation or if any layers of the pit forming the mine border productive aquifers.

How is coal mined? Read Full Story: http://www.spoonfeeding.in/2013/02/how-is-coal-mined-what-is-surface.html Mining is the process of removing coal from the ground. There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

NOTE: Although this video shows an up-close look at the blasting process, NEVER go near an active surface mine or blast site without Federal training and permission. FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. After all the holes are loaded and rigged up, it's time for the fireworks! And remember kids, don't try this at home! Want to see more Blasting? What is CONVEYOR BRIDGE? What does CONVEYOR BRIDGE mean? CONVEYOR BRIDGE meaning & explanation

What is CONVEYOR BRIDGE? What does CONVEYOR BRIDGE mean? CONVEYOR BRIDGE meaning - CONVEYOR BRIDGE definition - CONVEYOR BRIDGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A conveyor bridge is a piece of mining equipment used in strip mining for the removal of overburden and for dumping it on the inner spoil bank of the open-cut mine. It is used together with multibucket excavators, frequently bucket chain excavators, that remove the overburden which is moved to the bridge by connecting conveyors. Conveyor bridges are used in working horizontally layered deposits with soft overburden rock in areas where mean annual temperatures are above freezing. They are frequently used in lignite mining. A conveyor bridge consists of girders resting on two or three supports mounted on rails, or sometimes on crawler tracks. The bridge is set across the pit and moves along the mining face at a few metres per minute. If it runs on rails, the tracks are shifted in accordance with the progress of the mining. The rock is moved from the excavator to the bridge by connecting conveyors. The dumping support of a conveyor bridge may rest on the soil of the seam or on a dumping mound specially poured and packed by the bridge itself, depending on the stability of the rock. The first conveyor bridge was built in Plessa lignite mine Agnes according to plans of mine director Friedrich von Delius. It was scrapped in 1959 after exposure of clay beds made mining in the pit unsafe. A large conveyor bridge with 200 m span and 50 m height, fed by a bucket-wheel excavator, was completed in 1930 in the Böhlen lignite mine. After it was toppled by a storm in 1937, a replacement went into service in 1939. The conveyor bridge of Espenhain lignite mine with a total length of 545 m, which started operation in 1944, could remove an overburden of 45 m thickness. Between 1969 and 1991, TAKRAF built five very large conveyor bridges of the type F60 of which four are still in operation in lignite mines in Lower Lusatia, and one has been preserved as a visitor attraction. These were constructed for removing overburden up to 60 m thick, are 502 m long and span 204 m. They could move originally up to 23000 m3/h, with additional excavators up to 34600 m3/h.

Saprolite - Video Learning - WizScience.com

"Saprolite" is a chemically weathered rock. Saprolites form in the lower zones of soil profiles and represent deep weathering of the bedrock surface. In most outcrops its color comes from ferric compounds. Deeply weathered profiles are widespread on the continental landmasses between latitudes 35°N and 35°S. Conditions for the formation of deeply weathered regolith include a topographically moderate relief flat enough to prevent erosion and to allow leaching of the products of chemical weathering. A second condition is long periods of tectonic stability; tectonic activity and climate change can cause erosion. The third condition is humid tropical to temperate climate. Poorly weathered saprolite grit aquifers are capable of producing groundwater, often suitable for livestock. Deep weathering causes the formation of many secondary and supergene ores – bauxite, iron ores, saprolitic gold, supergene copper, uranium and heavy minerals in residual accumulations. Saprolite is a chemically weathered rock . More intense weathering results in a continuous transition from saprolite to laterite. Saprolites form in the lower zones of soil horizons and represent deep weathering of the bedrock surface. In lateritic regoliths – regoliths are the loose layer of rocks that rest on the bedrock – saprolite may be overlain by upper horizons of residual laterite; most of the original profile is preserved by residual soils or transported overburden. Weathering formed thin kaolinitic saprolites 1,000 to 500 million years ago; thick kaolinitic saprolites 200 to 66 million years ago; and medium-thick immature saprolites 5 million years ago. The general structure of kaolinite has silicate sheets bonded to aluminium hydroxide layers. Wiz Science™ is "the" learning channel for children and all ages. Surface Mining (Open Cast Mining) Surface mining is used when a coal seam is located close to the surface. Heavy equipment is used to clear the land of trees, shrubs and topsoil. Holes are drilled into the rock and explosives are placed in these holes. The explosion breaks up the dirt and rock called overburden. Large earth-moving machines move the overburden to expose the coal seam. When the coal is uncovered, bulldozers and shovels scoop up the coal and load it into large trucks. All of the coal is mined. In 2000, there were six surface mines in Illinois. The surface mines produced 3,800,000 tons of coal and employed 330 miners. After mining the topsoil is replaced for plants and wildlife to grow again.

What is ACID MINE DRAINAGE? What does ACID MINE DRAINAGE mean? ACID MINE DRAINAGE meaning

What is ACID MINE DRAINAGE? What does ACID MINE DRAINAGE mean? ACID MINE DRAINAGE meaning - ACID MINE DRAINAGE definition - ACID MINE DRAINAGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Acid mine drainage, acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), or acid rock drainage (ARD) refers to the outflow of acidic water from metal mines or coal mines. Acid rock drainage occurs naturally within some environments as part of the rock weathering process but is exacerbated by large-scale earth disturbances characteristic of mining and other large construction activities, usually within rocks containing an abundance of sulfide minerals. Areas where the earth has been disturbed (e.g. construction sites, subdivisions, and transportation corridors) may create acid rock drainage. In many localities, the liquid that drains from coal stocks, coal handling facilities, coal washeries, and coal waste tips can be highly acidic, and in such cases it is treated as acid rock drainage. The same type of chemical reactions and processes may occur through the disturbance of acid sulfate soils formed under coastal or estuarine conditions after the last major sea level rise, and constitutes a similar environmental hazard. Historically, the acidic discharges from active or abandoned mines were called acid mine drainage, or AMD. The term acid rock drainage, or ARD, was introduced in the 1980s and 1990s to indicate that acidic drainage can originate from sources other than mines. For example, a paper presented in 1991 at a major international conference on this subject was titled: "The Prediction of Acid Rock Drainage - Lessons from the Database" Both AMD and ARD refer to low pH or acidic waters caused by the oxidation of sulfide minerals, though ARD is the more generic name. In cases where drainage from a mine is not acidic and has dissolved metals or metalloids, or was originally acidic, but has been neutralized along its flow path, then it is described as "Neutral Mine Drainage", "Mining-Influenced Water" or otherwise. None of these other names have gained general acceptance. Sub-surface mining often progresses below the water table, so water must be constantly pumped out of the mine in order to prevent flooding. When a mine is abandoned, the pumping ceases, and water floods the mine. This introduction of water is the initial step in most acid rock drainage situations. Tailings piles or ponds, mine waste rock dumps, and coal spoils are also an important source of acid mine drainage. After being exposed to air and water, oxidation of metal sulfides (often pyrite, which is iron-sulfide) within the surrounding rock and overburden generates acidity. Colonies of bacteria and archaea greatly accelerate the decomposition of metal ions, although the reactions also occur in an abiotic environment. These microbes, called extremophiles for their ability to survive in harsh conditions, occur naturally in the rock, but limited water and oxygen supplies usually keep their numbers low. Special extremophiles known as Acidophiles especially favor the low pH levels of abandoned mines. In particular, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is a key contributor to pyrite oxidation. Metal mines may generate highly acidic discharges where the ore is a sulfide mineral or is associated with pyrite. In these cases the predominant metal ion may not be iron but rather zinc, copper, or nickel. The most commonly mined ore of copper, chalcopyrite, is itself a copper-iron-sulfide and occurs with a range of other sulfides. Thus, copper mines are often major culprits of acid mine drainage. At some mines, acidic drainage is detected within 2–5 years after mining begins, whereas at other mines, it is not detected for several decades. In addition, acidic drainage may be generated for decades or centuries after it is first detected. For this reason, acid mine drainage is considered a serious long-term environmental problem associated with mining.

Legal Aid Reform

07:37
The Effect of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 on Legal Aid for Family Cases. The legal aid system was created in 1949 as part of the development of the post-war Welfare State, alongside the National Health Service. It provides funding both for legal advice and out-of-court representation by lawyers, for example in negotiating the settlement of disputes, and -- should it come to this -- legal representation in court. However, this is set to change in April 2013, when the controversial Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 is due to come into force. The Act raises profound concerns about access to justice, largely removing legal aid from many of the areas of law where it has previously been available. Ms Jo Miles discusses the potential effects of the new Act on access to justice, especially in relation to difficult family law cases. Ms Miles is Fellow and Director of Studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, and a Senior Lecturer in Law, specialising in Family Law. She is also Academic door tenant at 1 Hare Court, Assistant editor of the Child and Family Law Quarterly. and an Elected member of the Executive Council of the International Society of Family Law. In 2005 Ms Miles was seconded for two years to the Law Commission for England and Wales to work on the financial consequences of relationship breakdown. OPEN-PIT COAL EXCAVATION SITE AT JUNNAR DEO IN MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA

01:52
A coverage of open cast coal mine near Junnardeo in Madhya Pradesh. Open-pit mining, Open-cut mining or Opencast mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow. Open-pit mines are used when deposits of commercially useful minerals or rock are found near the surface; that is, where the overburden (surface material covering the valuable deposit) is relatively thin or the material of interest is structurally unsuitable for tunneling (as would be the case for sand, cinder, and gravel). For minerals that occur deep below the surface - where the overburden is thick or the mineral occurs as veins in hard rock - underground mining methods extract the valued material. Open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone are commonly referred to as quarries. Open-pit mines are typically enlarged until either the mineral resource is exhausted, or an increasing ratio of overburden to ore makes further mining uneconomic. BHS Combimix process for processing clay-and-rock mixtures in quarries

02:32
The Combimix process involves the efficient use of limestone, which creates value from previously unutilized and dumped material, particularly clay-and-rock mixtures. One ton of lime is all it takes to turn 100 tons of rock into a valuable building material. Germany is rich in rock-based resources. Counting close to 250 active quarries, the German stone industry is rock solid. BHS-Sonthofen developed a special Combimix process that allows quarries and gravel pits to maximize profits by using resources more efficiently. Previously, there had been no adequate solution for reactivating contaminated rock material. Now approximately 90% of what used to be mining overburden can be converted into a marketable rock grade – not just in Germany, but across the globe. The Combimix process turns clay-and-rock mixtures found in quarries and gravel pits into a valuable building material. Before development of this process, these mixtures had to be refilled or disposed at a landfill. Owing to this process, the German customer MSW Mineralstoffwerke Südwest was able to increase the yield of its repository by 25 percent. In order to produce the same volume, it was previously necessary to extract about 620,000 tons of limestone annually. Now the total is around 188,000 tons less, meaning a relative reduction of around 30 percent. The raw material efficiency thus increased from 65 to 70 percent to around 93 percent. The new process thus conserves limestone resources and extends the lifecycle of quarries worldwide. Because less material will be classified as unmarketable, Combimix furthermore creates space in landfills and backfills. Furthermore, this means that millions of tons of already disposed material thought to be lost can now be reactivated. As an added benefit, the Combimix process reduces energy needs for processing by almost 20 percent. BHS-Sonthofen presented with the German Resources Efficiency Award 2016 for the Combimix process. Two Deadly Mine Blasts Kill 40 Workers in China

01:24
A deadly mine blast occurred on Saturday in China's southwest Sichuan Province, killing 28 miners and injuring 18, state media reports. Three of the injured are in a critical condition, suffering from extensive burns and gas inhalation. One survivor had his face mask burnt off during the explosion. [Ma Tinggang, Injured Miner:] "It was a strong force. I heard a huge boom (from my back). I then saw a fire." Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. It was the second deadly mine explosion in China within 24 hours. In southwest China's Guizhou province, twelve miners were killed and two injured on Friday evening in a gas explosion. One of the injured suffered burns to 95 percent of his body. This survivor was lucky to be further away from the blast. [Ma Dayun, Survivor:] "I pinched my nose, lay on my stomach and crawled forward in the darkness. There was no light. I could not see or hear anybody. I kept a cool head, and when I heard the sound of an air extractor coming from above, I climbed to that air outlet." Corruption, poor safety controls and insufficient safety equipment make China's mines the most deadly in the world. Labour rights groups say mining accidents often go unreported by mine owners, who fear of economic loss and punishment. This means that the almost 2,000 mining deaths reported in 2011 could be even higher. Al Ahli Holding Group listening to a new audience: Mohammed Khammas

05:46
As CEO of Al Ahli Holding Group, Mohammed Khammas hasn't just remodeled a family industrial conglomerate into an entertainment empire - he's helping reinvent the way brands engage with their customers in the digital age. Al Ahli Holding Group (AAHG) is a four-decade old multi-diversified international conglomerate that his father, Nasser Khammas, built from scratch. Activities range from real estate to construction, engineering, mining and infrastructure, retail and trading, technology and logistics, lifestyle and fitness, entertainment and hospitality. Since Khammas junior entered the business in 1999, he has diversified it considerably, opening Dubai Outlet Mall, buying the franchise rights to US-based Gold’s Gym and licenses to publish Marvel, Warner Bros and DC Comics comic books. He established Al Ahli Plastics, opened Comicave, the world’s largest comic store at Dubai Outlet Mall, and launched a Singapore-based company, also with Comicave Studios and Universal Events, to host events and conventions. He also has alliances with Fox Studios, Marvel-Disney, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. To run all this, AAHG has 9,000 employees, and is based in the UAE with representative offices across 20 countries. So, when Khammas says he doesn’t want to overburden his team, he is not exaggerating. And it means he occasionally has to reign in his enthusiasm to reshape not only his own family empire, but the future of commerce more generally. Because, as it turns out from a wide-ranging conversation at the company headquarters next to Outlet Mall, Khammas has an extremely focused vision for how these seemingly disparate businesses connect with each other, and the customers he wants to attract. In this edition of Inside AB Bernd Debusmann and Jeremy Lawrence dig into Mohammed Khammas' innovative approach to finding new customers in the digital era. Aga Khan Program Lecture: AbdouMaliq Simone

01:52:21
4/6/16 As a trope for divergent urbanism, the “Global South”—encompassing Jakarta, Johannesburg, São Paulo, Delhi and other metropolitan areas in the Southern Hemisphere—refers to a distinct amalgam of urban zones constituted by shared subjections to colonialism and underdevelopment, as well as by city-making processes that proceed by culturally dystonic impositions of planning, infrastructure, policy, and provisionally assembled local compensations. Today, the "Global South" is now rapidly fading from view—or perhaps it never should have been envisioned in the first place. The urban South may continue to have some purchase in international political organizing, or in analyses of economic inequality and precariousness of different kinds, at different scales. But urban theory increasingly considers the ways cultural interchanges, economic flows, governance regimes, histories, and alliances actively articulate places in multiple and shifting ways that a continued focus on South–North divides oversimplify or misrepresent. AbdouMaliq Simone will explore this notion “as a means of thinking through the various instances, ambiguities, and powers of detachment as they effect urban residents today, knowing full well that an urban South does not ‘really exist,’” with the aim of relocating the urban South “as a kind of elsewhere at the interior of a seemingly hegemonic trajectory that converts urban space into a uniform everywhere.” Abdoumaliq Simone is an urbanist and research professor at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity and visiting professor of sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London, visiting professor at the African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town, research associate with the Rujak Center for Urban Studies in Jakarta, and research fellow at the University of Tarumanagara. For three decades he has worked with practices of social interchange, cognition, local economy, and the constitution of power relations that affect how heterogeneous African and Southeast Asian cities are lived, focusing on the concrete challenges of remaking municipal systems, training local government personnel, and designing collaborative partnerships among technicians, residents, artists, and politicians.

Out of the Fiery Furnace - Episode 7 - The Age of Metals Can It Last

58:25
From the Stone Age to the era of the silicon chip — metals and minerals have marked the milestones of our civilization. OUT OF THE FIERY FURNACE traces the story of civilization through the exploitation of metals, minerals and energy resources. Renowned radio and BBC television commentator Michael Charlton hosts seven, one-hour programs filmed in more than 50 different parts of the world. This very unusual public television series combines the disciplines of history, science, archeology and economics in order to explore the relationship between technology and society. The final episode in this series explores modern metal and energy resources, including the environmental destruction that comes as a result of our mining. Are there enough metals left on earth for all who need them? Where will we find energy sources in the years to come? New methods of energy and metal exploration are discussed with emphasis on the discovery of mineral reserves in Asia, which has produced yet another shift in world civilization, this time to the Pacific Basin. (60 minutes) VHS Cover: http://imgur.com/XVIHau7 Disclaimer: This video series, produced in 1986 by Opus Films is shown here for Educational Purposes. It includes footage of cultures in India, China, Near East, etc. and ancient methods of manufacturing metals. It is hoped that this information is useful for archival and educational purposes to viewers all across the world. The video is provided here under the Fair Use policy.
2017 AM: Executive Session: Why Anthropology Matters: Making Anthropology Relevant and

01:41:56
Cont. Engaging a Larger Public Audience through Pedagogy "Teaching is one of the main venues through which anthropologists regularly reach a larger general audience over a sustained period of time. In a given academic year, individual faculty may work with between 120 to 800 students. Many of these students will not become majors but all will care for, design for, assist, or work with people from many different backgrounds. Yet, in the minds of some students and the larger public, anthropology often indexes vague ideas about Indiana Jones, “other cultures”, and even just-so stories that do not have an equal place in scientific inquiry. As Cathy Davidson writes in her 2017 article, The Future of Higher Education is Now, “we must radically reform higher education to meet the most pressing needs of our age.” What role does and should anthropology as a discipline have in these changes? What does this mean for the way that anthropologists’ approach teaching? In thinking about how anthropology matters, how do we make anthropology matter to our students? How can we optimize our teaching to reach out to students and the communities in which they belong to help them understand why anthropology matters and more importantly how collaborative work with anthropologists can be relevant for obtaining their goals? This session addresses these and other related questions through highlighting particular pedagogical strategies that can be employed in a variety of class sizes and levels both within academic and vocational settings. The papers in this session illustrate how anthropology’s analytical skill set, such as an “anthropological ontology”, participant observation, reflexivity, and social theory uniquely position the discipline to contribute to current political debates and educational shifts to more experiential learning. The papers rethink how social media, service learning, collaborative projects, and anthropological theory can be integrated into course curriculum to foster the use of an anthropological skill set in students’ daily lives. Whether it is through experiential or class-based activities, the papers show how anthropologists’ can support students in recognizing and understanding structural inequalities and critically engaging in current issues, such as immigration. They also address the challenges surrounding these approaches and strategies to address them. In addition, attention is given to how similar effects can be reproduced through the use of social media in large introductory anthropology courses and how anthropologists can prepare graduates to communicate why anthropology matters. Hidden assumptions and conflicting worldviews are at the heart of today’s debates over how to approach global challenges. Openness to different worldviews is key to finding appropriate solutions. This session’s papers call attention to the importance of anthropology in addressing these impasses and how a redesign of the curriculum can bridge the divides. Together, these papers highlight how teaching can serve as an effective platform for anthropology to reach a broader public audience and show how anthropology can and should play a central role in supporting non-majors and the broader public in becoming more aware and socially engaged citizens." Matthew S. Henry - Extractive Fictions: Energy and Environmental Justice in the Anthropocene

47:45
The ASU Department of English presents doctoral candidate Matthew S. Henry in a "warm-up" talk for a forthcoming presentation in Stanford University's Environmental Humanities Project lecture series. This talk, titled "Extractive Fictions: Energy and Environmental Justice in the Anthropocene," will begin with a discussion of "extractive fictions," or cultural productions that map the uneven impacts of fossil fuel extraction on poor, ethnic minority, and indigenous communities. As a case study, it will focus on fiction, poetry, and public art exhibits that respond to socio-ecological crises associated with coal and gas development in impoverished rural communities in northern Appalachia, with an emphasis on the ways in which artists are challenging dominant narratives of extraction as a path to economic and social progress. The talk will close with an exploration of collaborative, cross-disciplinary reclamation art projects that prompt affected communities to envision post-extraction futures and an epistemological shift away from extraction culture. Matthew S. Henry is a PhD candidate in the English at ASU.
