Using Buffett's Biggest Mistake to Argue Dividends over Buybacks
Warren Buffett's biggest mistake in the stock market by far was his purchase of Dexter Shoes in 1993. In this video I talk about the details of that purchase, what its results were and how it indirectly supports the (controversial) idea that dividends are a better return of cash to shareholders rather than stock buybacks (aka share repurchases). Of course most companies should and do both pay a dividend and buyback stock, however many (if not most) investors, particularly of the value investing tilt, say they would prefer a company to do stock buybacks over dividends. In an ideal world I'd agree with this preference in the buybacks vs dividends arguments, however the world isn't ideal or predictable, and it goes exactly to the point of this video and the result of Buffett's biggest mistake that he ever made. The book I reference in this video, Michael Batnick's Big Mistakes, tries to highlight the idea that the market is unpredictable and that many uncertainties hit even the best of investors, and that this is just the name of the game. In this short video I try to argue that this is exactly why investors should prefer a dividend over a stock buyback-- if given the preference between one or the other. Regardless of where you stand on the stock buybacks vs. dividends discussion, this story of Warren Buffett making a poor investment serves as a great reminder of the risks of investing in the stock market, and that no one is immune to losing money-- even if you have done extensive research and are the best investor in the world. ===RESOURCES USED IN VIDEO=== Book: Big Mistakes by Michael Batnick https://www.amazon.com/Big-Mistakes-Investors-Investments-Bloomberg/dp/1119366550/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1528554157&sr=8-1&keywords=michael+batnick ===INVESTORS: WHAT TO DO NEXT=== --Subscribe to the YouTube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4TX... --Download the FREE Investing for Beginners EBOOK, which shows you 7 Steps to Understanding the Stock Market, here: http://stockmarketpdf.com --Check out the "How to Analyze Stocks Using Valuations" playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... --Get quick stock market tips from me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ValueTrapBlog --Follow me on Instagram here: http://instagram.com/houseofsloth

Here's Why the TrimTabs Float Shrink ETF Outperforms the S&P
Increased corporate buybacks in recent months along with a low exposure to energy companies has enabled the TrimTabs Float Shrink ETF (TTFS) to outperform the S&P 500, said the fund's portfolio manager Minyi Chen. Chen added that the companies that are cutting their buyback programs due to the stronger dollar or lower oil prices are being offset in his fund by companies increasing their buyback counts. He said a foreign profits repatriation deal in Washington would be good for his fund but he is not counting on a political deal to make it happen anytime soon. Finally, Chen said its okay for Microsoft and Apple to sell debt to buy repurchase shares, but only because they have fortress balance sheets. TrimTabs Founder Launching New Float Shrink ETF
Charles Biderman is back with a new float shrink ETF. TrimTabs Asset Management is launching the TrimTabs Float Shrink ETF under the ticker " " this week. This follows AdvisorShares' decision to replace TrimTabs as the Sub-Advisor for the AdvisorShares Wilshire Buyback ETF at the end of June. With TTAC, TrimTabs founder Charles Biderman is bringing its proven proprietary algorithmic approach to a new ETF. "We're extremely excited to be able once again to offer our proven methodology to investors," said Biderman. The AdvisorShares Wilshire Buyback ETF, which was developed and managed by Biderman until this past June, is up 110% over the past five years, 33 percentage points better than the S&P 500. TTAC is primarily focused on generating long-term gains that exceed those of the Russell 3000 Index. It does so by selecting approximately 100 companies that are both generating free cash flow and reducing their share count without the use of leverage. "Free cash flow is the gold standard when it comes to evaluating a company," said Biderman. "While managements have enormous discretion in how they report sales, earnings, assets, and liabilities, free cash flow is much less likely to be subject to the same financial gimmickry." Another pillar of TTAC's investment methodology is a focus on share reductions, also known as "float shrink." Companies execute share reductions by lowering the amount of shares outstanding, most commonly through stock buybacks, though this can also be accomplished with other corporate actions. This can prove advantageous for investors holding the stock in question, as they end up holding a "larger piece of the pie." Biderman said TrimTabs takes an extra step by ensuring that companies executing buybacks are only doing so with free cash flow, not through additional leverage. TTAC's expense ratio will be 59 basis points, compared to 90 basis points currently being charged for the AdvisorShares TTFS. S&P 500 vs Berkshire Hathaway - Which is the better investment for your money? The S&P500 (SPY) and Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A or BRK-B) are both great performers over the long term, but this video helps narrow down which one of the two I would personally pick as an investment. The S&P500 is the 500 biggest companies in the US and it can be tracked by the ticker SPY. Berkshire Hathaway is a company - managed by Warren Buffet who is one of the greatest investors of all time. He arguably hand picked the best companies (43 public companies and also a bunch of private ones that they own 100% or close to 100% in such as Duracell, Fruit of the Loom, and Dairy Queen). So say you believe that Berkshire's hand picked companies will outperform the S&P500 - what are some negatives of holding BRK? First you need to understand there's 2 versions - BRK.A and BRK.B. BRK.A is around $320,000/share and BRK.B is around $215/share. The main difference is BRK.B does not give you any voting rights in the company but most of us out there can't trade $320k/share anyways. So a big difference is Dividends - BRK does not pay a dividend ($0) whereas SPY pays a 1.7% div. Another is commission fees - a lot of brokers don't charge to buy/sell ETFs - so you save a bit with SPY here but BRK is a stock, so you are tied to your usual broker fees for stocks. If you have Robinhood, then this is negligible. The last negative I see is they don't really hold any growth companies - this is a compromise, as Buffet believes in companies like KO, AXP, JNJ - which are blue chip safe stocks. You don't get exposure to companies like Amazon and Google which are considered more growth-type companies. Essentially, holding BRK.B is like trusting an expert financial adviser with your money - if you are one that loves investing in Mutual Funds, then BRK pretty much offers this, but with no management fees. Now the most important question is - which has performed better? Over last 1, 5, and 10 yrs, BRK has outperformed the SPY: -1yr performance is 34% vs 24% -5yr is 120% vs 88% -10yr is 131% vs 113% -And during the last recession from Dec 2007 to June 2009, both were roughly the same -Spy was -38% -BRK was -40% So, should you buy the S&P or BRK? Since I'm not financial adviser, I can't say - but I personally feel better holding the S&P even though BRK did better performance wise. The reason is because I feel once Buffet steps down as CEO, there will be a lot of fear that the new CEO won't be able to truly replace him and this could cause the stock to dip, at least in the shorter term.
