Streaming and Online Algorithms for GraphX GraphX is a resilient distributed graph processing framework on Apache Spark. It is designed for, and is good at, analysis of static graphs. However, it does not support analysis on time evolving graphs yet. In this talk, I will present graph processing research on streaming enhancements for GraphX, which may be used in both pure stream processing or lambda architectures. I will describe an architecture design, and demonstrate how it works with three machine learning algorithms, with detailed evaluation and analysis on performance and scalability.

Making Hadoop Realtime by Dr. William Bain,CEO of Scaleout Software

01:06:43
Abstract: Hadoop has been widely embraced for its ability to economically store and analyze large data sets. Using parallel computing techniques like MapReduce, Hadoop can reduce long computation times to hours or minutes. This works well for mining large volumes of historical data stored on disk, but it is not suitable for gaining real-time insights from live operational data. Still, the idea of using Hadoop for real-time data analytics on live data is appealing because it leverages existing programming skills and infrastructure – and the parallel architecture of Hadoop itself. This presentation will describe how real-time analytics using Hadoop can be performed by combining an in-memory data grid (IMDG) with an integrated, stand-alone Hadoop MapReduce execution engine. This new technology delivers fast results for live data and also accelerates the analysis of large, static data sets. Bio: Dr. William L. Bain is Founder and CEO of ScaleOut Software, Inc. Bill has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering/parallel computing from Rice University, and he has worked at Bell Labs research, Intel, and Microsoft. Bill founded and ran three start-up companies prior to joining Microsoft. In the most recent company (Valence Research), he developed a distributed Web load-balancing software solution that was acquired by Microsoft and is now called Network Load Balancing within the Windows Server operating system. Dr. Bain holds several patents in computer architecture and distributed computing. ODSC WEST 2015 | Hayuan Li - "How Companies are Using Tachyon, a Memory centric Distrib. Storage"

21:51
Abstract: Memory is the key to fast big data processing. This has been realized by many, and frameworks such as Spark and Shark already leverage memory performance. As data sets continue to grow, storage is increasingly becoming a critical bottleneck in many workloads. To address this need, we have developed Tachyon, a memory-centric fault-tolerant distributed storage system, which enables reliable file sharing at memory-speed across cluster frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache MapReduce, and Apache Flink. The result of over three years of research and development, Tachyon achieves both memory-speed and fault tolerance. Tachyon is Hadoop compatible. Existing Spark, MapReduce, Flink programs can run on top of it without any code changes. Tachyon is the default off-heap option in Spark. The project is open source and is already deployed at many companies in production. In addition, Tachyon has more than 100 contributors from over 30 institutions, including Yahoo, Tachyon Nexus, Redhat, Baidu, Intel, and IBM. The project is the storage layer of the Berkeley Data Analytics Stack (BDAS) and also part of the Fedora distribution. In this talk, we give an overview of Tachyon, as well as several use cases we have seen in practice. Bio: Haoyuan Li is founder and CEO of Tachyon Nexus. He is also a Computer Science Ph.D. candidate in AMPLab at UC Berkeley, where he co-created Tachyon, an open source memory-centric distributed storage system. He is also a founding committer of Apache Spark. Before Berkeley, he worked at Conviva and Google. Haoyuan has a M.S. from Cornell University and a B.S. from Peking University, both in Computer Science.

RuPy 13: Unlocking the Universe with Python and LSST / Jake Vanderplas

39:09
Gone are the days of the solitary astronomer up late in a cold dome, staring through the eyepiece of a telescope. Modern astronomy research is characterized by automated digital surveys which create floods of imagery and other data, too voluminous for even large teams of Astronomers to analyze by-eye. Starting in the second half of this decade, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will push the boundary even further by repeatedly image the entire southern sky over the course of ten years. The resulting data stream will effectively be a ten-year movie of the night sky, comprising hundreds of petabytes of raw data in the end, and will lead to an unprecedented ability to understand the physics of the universe, from gigantic nuclear explosions at the centers of galaxies, to orbits of extrasolar planets around distant stars, to the accelerating expansion of space itself. In this talk, I'll highlight some of the more exciting prospects for science with LSST, and highlight how Python is being utilized within astronomy to encourage open, reproducible research as we process, analyze, and share our data.

#bbuzz: Ted Dunning "Real-Time Learning for Fun and Profit"

33:05
Real-time Learning for Fun and Profit Ted Dunning http://berlinbuzzwords.de/sessions/real-time-learning-fun-and-profit I will describe how real-time Bayesian learning can optimize real processes. These processes can be web-sites, user interfaces, ad-targeting servers, back-end server farms, search engines or physical systems. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have all adopted the algorithms described in this talk for ad targeting because they produce superior results, but you don't have to be on that scale to benefit as well. The positive impact of these new learning techniques can be massive. Conventional techniques are harder to implement and make it harder for the consumers of the results of such tests to understand the results and to take correct actions. Worst of all, conventional techniques waste enormous amounts of precious user data making it harder to react quickly. Counter-intuitively, while Bayesian techniques for real-time learning are based from complex mathematical theories that have only recently been fully understood, these techniques are actually very simple conceptually, are much easier to implement correctly than conventional statistical approaches and produce results that are much easier to understand, especially for non-statisticians. In this talk, the audience will learn the basic ideas behind effective real-time learning, but also see detailed implementation techniques and learn how to architect effective testing systems. I will also cover methods for starting gently without massive system upheavals and how to build consensus around how real-time learning and optimization. The focus throughout the talk will be on practical methods that can be applied in real life. The code described in this talk will be made freely available. About the speaker: Ted Dunning is the Chief Application Architect at MapR Technologies. Ted has held Chief Scientist positions at Veoh Networks, ID Analytics and at MusicMatch, (now Yahoo Music). Ted is responsible for building the most advanced identity theft detection system on the planet, as well as one of the largest peer-assisted video distribution systems and ground-breaking music and video recommendations systems. Ted has 15 issued and 15 pending patents and contributes to several Apache open source projects including Hadoop, Zookeeper and Hbase™. He is also a committer and/or project management committee member for Apache Mahout, Apache Zookeeper and Apache Drill. Ted earned a BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado; a MS degree in computer science from New Mexico State University; and a Ph.D. in computing science from Sheffield University in the United Kingdom. Ted also bought the drinks at the very first Hadoop User Group meeting.

A recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development analyzed more than 200 government blockchain programs globally, a community that is rapidly growing as public services explore the immense potential of this emerging technology. In order to better learn about blockchain and evaluate solutions that improve transaction performance, traceability, and trust, public services must collaborate not just across silos between agencies, but side-by-side with the businesses, academic researchers, and organizations that are leading these advances. The Hyperledger Project, started in December 2015 by the Linux Foundation, is an open source initiative to support the collaborative development of blockchain-based distributed ledgers. In this first of our new Emerging Technology Leadership Series, we invite Brian Behlendorf, executive director of the Hyperledger Project and one of The New York Times’s “Top 10 People Leading the Blockchain Revolution,” answer your questions about collaborative development of blockchain solutions and share insights from the source on what public services need to know. The Emerging Technology Leadership Series, hosted by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Emerging Citizen Technology Office, is a six-part livestream pilot to enhance the modern federal workforce with training, education, and awareness of emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence, Robotic Process Automation, Blockchain, Social Technologies, and Virtual/Augmented Reality.

We project the Big Data market to top $18 billion in 2013, a growth rate of 61%. Looking beyond 2013, we forecast the total Big Data market to approach $50 billion by 2017, which translates to a 31% compound annual growth rate over the five-year period 2012-2017. While the global economic outlook is for slow to stagnant growth over this period, We believe the Big Data market will not be severely impacted and may, in fact, benefit from enterprises needing to do more with less, which effective Big Data analytics facilitates. Dennis J. Andrucyk Maniac Lecture, May 23, 2018

01:17:59
Dennis J. Andrucyk, Deputy Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters, presented a Maniac lecture entitled, "Speak Your Mind, but Ride a Fast Horse; From GS-1 to SES.
