That assistance somehow loses it’s charm when the people receiving it can’t spend their time sitting on the couch watching TV or playing video games. Some people will avoid work like the plague if they can find someone else willing to tolerate having them around all the time and living in their basement. But there is some hopeful news: this particular state has implemented work requirements for those receiving food stamps and their enrollment numbers have declined steeply. From Conservative Tribune: According to Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, after the Razorback State began enacting work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — colloquially known as “food stamps” — back on Jan. 1 of last year, the rolls of recipients dropped by roughly 25,000 individuals in just one year. According to KASU-FM, the state had ended a waiver on a three-month limit to food stamps for able-bodied childless individuals between 18 to 49 who do not work, unless they’re either enrolled in school or a job training program. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that roughly 9,000 were kicked off of the program as of April 1, when the three-month limit could start being enforced. Between April and November, the program shed another 15,000 individuals. Of the 10 states that implemented the requirements last year, Arkansas saw the largest drop in food stamp enrollment, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. And that’s not all. Since 2013, the over-500,000 individuals in Arkansas who participated in the food stamp program has been reduced to 418,000. Now that Donald Trump is set to take the presidential reins away from Barack Obama on January 20, we could see a whole slew of these kinds of policies coming down the pipe in the not too distant future.

Zuma, a leader without authority and no wriggle room, says analyst

03:51
Zuma: a leader without authority and no wriggle room, says analyst. Political analyst Zwelethu Jolobe says Zuma is in a state of transition and hand-over, with the judicial state-capture inquiry, in particular, likely to harm his final days. Amid the release of the terms of reference for the judicial inquiry into state capture‚ political analyst Zwelethu Jolobe has provided an insight into the kind of environment faced by President Jacob Zuma as his administration starts wrapping up ahead of the 2019 general elections. Jolobe said Zuma was no longer the leader of the ruling party and this has serious implications. "He is no longer the leader of the party, this means he [isn’t] an important source of authority. That is gone. The only thing he has is his office. Even then‚ his office term comes to an end officially next year. "At the end of any term‚ any bureaucracy’s general orientation shifts. The issue now is what [Zuma’s administration] can plan for. What can [it] wrap up in this year to plan for the next administration? This is a period of hand-over. This is a transition from his administration to the next one, it is no longer about tying to implement things or sign new deals. That period is gone. "Therefore, there isn’t much room for him to manoeuvre at this stage. In terms of where he sits‚ his room to move is extremely small because his party is now concerned with next year’s elections. All the issues related to that — the manifestos‚ party lists … have to be done." On Thursday‚ Zuma published the terms of reference for the judicial commission of inquiry into state capture‚ paving the way for an investigation into allegations surrounding the controversial Gupta family. The terms of reference‚ published in the Government Gazette‚ appear to be in line with recommendations made by former public protector Thuli Madonsela. Among other things‚ the inquiry will investigate claims made by former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas and former MP Vytjie Mentor that they were offered Cabinet positions by members of the Gupta family. It will also look into allegations of irregularities in the awarding of contracts‚ mining licences and government advertising in the New Age newspaper, and other government services. Since the ANC conference in December‚ the net has been closing in on people alleged to have had links with the Guptas and those who mismanaged government processes. This week‚ Parliament grilled former Eskom chief financial officer Anoj Singh and former acting CEO Matshela Koko — this while Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini was answering difficult questions on the role she played in the social grants crisis. Dlamini was questioned at the Office of the Chief Justice in Midrand where an inquiry into her role and liability in the 2017 crisis is being investigated. Jolobe warned that all these processes‚ in particular the state-capture inquiry‚ would have an impact on the ANC. "The longer all parties which are conflicted or have an interest in this issue delay it‚ the longer they fight the inevitable; the more it becomes an albatross around the neck of the ANC. [The more this happens], the more it diminishes their chances of winning and being strong in next year’s election." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ► Hot news: https://goo.gl/J7mUhU ► ANC: https://goo.gl/x9xRAu ► Scandal: https://goo.gl/YGe8cw ► Zimbawe updates: https://goo.gl/2MJUjp .......................................................................................... Are Courts the Proper Venues for Resolving These Issues?

01:27:27
Another issue concerns the role of courts in determining policy and practice on such matters as teacher tenure, dismissal, and due process, which are more commonly the product of the political process, including state legislation, school-board policy, and collective bargaining. What is the appropriate role of courts as a venue for resolving complicated social issues—issues in which evidence is mixed and evolving, and where competing and deeply-held values are in play? In the above link, the Defence ministry of US has rejected importing chips for their defence equipment. When the defence ministry has rejected it , we foolish people are buying the planes from the US and endagering the lives of soldiers and also civilians. Quoting from the above link "Defense Science Board Report "HIGH PERFORMANCE MICROCHIP SUPPLY" "Trustworthiness of custom and commercial systems that support military operations ... has been jeopardized. Trustworthiness includes confidence that classified or mission critical information contained in chip designs is not compromised, reliability is not degraded or untended design elements inserted in chips as a result of design or fabrication in conditions open to adversary agents. Trust cannot be added to integrated circuits after fabrication; electrical testing and reverse engineering cannot be relied upon to detect undesired alterations in military integrated circuits." "The shift from United States to foreign IC manufacture endangers the security of classified information embedded in chip designs; additionally, it opens the possibility that "Trojan horses" and other unauthorized design inclusions may appear in unclassified integrated circuits used in military applications. More subtle shifts in process parameters or layout line spacing can drastically shorten the lives of components..." Which is why we should manufacture ALL chips we use in India. We had a chip manufacturing company which mysteriously caught fire, and entire factory got gutted in 1989. This was not accident, because such factories are made with sprinklers ...and have permanent staff to run to point where fire erupts. Later came MMS\PVNR in 1991. They suspended all chip licenses and said that GoI will issue licences after GoI makes semi-conductor policies. 20 years later, the draft of semi-conductor policy is still unfinished !! And so we have to import all chips. This show that out top is completely rotten. And as I always believed and stated, that unless we have RTR at ALL levels -- lower, middle and top --- it is too easy for MNCs to bribe out "unrecallable" authorities and get GoI policies tilted in favor of MNCs, even when it huts Indian Military. Now given that we are importing so many weapons from US, most critical weapons like planes etc will come with Kill Switches. So during war with China or Pakistan or Bangladesh (or all three - so called two front attack or three front attack) US will ask GoI to hand over all mineral mines and oil fields to US companies, or else threaten to activate Kill Switches. GoI will have to obey. One mineral mines etc go in US hands, within months they can usurp most factories and in next 1-2 decades impose Christianity in India. Former Coal Executive With Shoddy Safety Record Will Lead Mine Safety Agency

03:10
The Senate Wednesday confirmed a former coal executive with a dismal safety record to lead the government’s top agency regulating mine safety. President Trump’s nomination of David Zatezalo, former CEO of Kentucky-based Rhino Resources, was approved by a party-line vote of 52-48. Zatezalo will bring an unconventional perspective to the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) after serving as a top executive at a company hit with two “pattern of violations” citations by the agency. That specific sanction is a rarely used tool that former MSHA head Joe Main began wielding in 2010 after the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster killed 29 people. Rhino Resources was cited for two “pattern of violations” between November of 2010 and August of 2011, according to the Charleston Gazette-Mail. In the time between those two citations, tragedy struck at one of the company’s mines. Between those two warning letters, crew leader Joseph Cassell was killed at the Eagle No. 1 Mine when rock and coal from a portion of a mine wall collapsed onto him in June 2011. MSHA investigators concluded that Rhino’s efforts to control the mine walls with timbers and conventional bolts were inadequate, something that conditions at the mine had “put the operator on notice” about. Rhino was cited and paid $44,500 in fines to MSHA, records show. At another mine in Kentucky, the company was sanctioned for giving advance notice to miners that MSHA inspectors were on-site to investigate claims of workers smoki

Making Connections News May 05, 2015: McAteer – Mines No Safer After Upper Big Branch

08:11
April 4th was the 5th anniversary of the Upper Big Branch disaster, when 29 coal miners were killed in a methane explosion at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch Mine at Montcoal, near Whitesville, WV. J. Davitt McAteer, who headed the Mine Safety & Health Administration during the Clinton years, led the Governor’s Independent Investigation into the disaster. On this anniversary McAteer published an op-ed in the Charleston Gazette warning that not enough has changed in American coal mines to keep another disaster like Upper Big Branch from happening again. In fact, in some places like West Virginia mine safety laws are being gutted. He spoke to WMMT by telephone. He began his political activism in the 1970s during the period of students uprisings in the country, organised behind the banner of the black consciousness movement, which came to head during the 16 June 1976 massacre. His election into the ANC and especially to the position of Secretary-General followed his reputation as an effective organiser and trade union leader following his term as General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). He led the founding processes of the NUM and went on to lead the union to stage one of the biggest and most effective industrial strikes in South Africa in 1987, leading to a three weeks shutdown of the entire mining industry. He emerged out of that political standoff between labour and capital as a renowned negotiator, reputed for his tough approach and ability to push a hard bargain whilst maintaining the respect of his opponents. As part of his role as Secretary-general, he served as Chief Negotiator for the ANC at the Congress for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) at which the framework for a democratic transition was being mapped out. His experience as a negotiator in industrial conflicts asserted him as one of the key players in breaking stalemates and initiating strategic areas of consensus between opposing parties in that process. After the first democratic elections in 1994, Comrade Cyril Ramaphosa was deployed in Parliament by the ANC and was elected as Chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly tasked with drafting the new Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. He was re-elected as Secretary-General of the ANC in its 49th National Conference in 1994. Catch it Live on our stream

A clearly-irked French President Emmanuel Macron was heard telling Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman “you never listen to me” in a video captured during a break in the ongoing G20 summit Friday. The comments were made during a private conversation between the two leaders about the murder of Saudi activist Jamal Khashoggi and the political crisis in Yemen, a French official told Reuters. “You never listen to me,” Macron is heard saying in English in footage posted by the Saudi Gazette newspaper. “No I will listen of course,” bin Salman says, also in English, in response before launching into a fit of laughter. Macron, undeterred and continuing on with the conversation, later says “I’m a man of my word.”

Donald Trump takes on the Bureau of Land Management BLM, Federal Land Control

02:41
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/donald-trump-takes-on-federal-land-control/article/2579978 Forget China, guns or immigration. Donald Trump is taking on a new issue: federal land ownership. In a new op-ed for the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Republican presidential front-runner rails against the "draconian rule" of the Bureau of Land Management and the Obama administration's "land grab" in the western United States. "The BLM controls over 85 percent of the land in Nevada," Trump explains. "In the rural areas, those who for decades have had access to public lands for ranching, mining, logging and energy development are forced to deal with arbitrary and capricious rules that are influenced by special interests that profit from the D.C. rule-making and who fill the campaign coffers of Washington politicians." On Thursday, Trump told the New York Times he would end an ongoing dispute between Oregon ranchers and federal officials, that's culminated with a group of armed protesters staging an ongoing occupation of a federal wildlife refuge, with a "phone call."

Coal miner who died in WV had survived Sago blast - Daily tv news

03:07
Coal miner who died in WV had survived Sago blast MILL CREEK, W.Va. - A coal miner who died on the job in West Virginia was the brother of one the 12 killed in the Sago Mine disaster of 2006.The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that authorities identified the miner found dead Friday as Owen Mark Jones, a fire boss at the Pleasant Hill Mine. The surface mine is located near Mill Creek, about 90 miles east of Charleston. Jones' brother, Jesse, was among those killed when an explosion ripped through the Sago Mine, about 25 miles from Mill Creek. The brothers had worked together at the same mines for 17 years. On the day of the 2006 explosion, Owen Jones headed a second crew that followed his brother's group into the Sago Mine. His crew was about 10 minutes behind the others because they needed to switch to a larger vehicle, and they made it back out. Jones was among the men who tried to reach the 13 trapped miners, only one of whom survived. "It was like watching your brother falling off a cliff and not being able to do anything about it," he said at the time. Jones later returned to work at Sago, but ultimately asked for a transfer. "Every single noise, you jump," he said. "You're on edge all of the time." Jones, whose great-grandfather also died in a mine explosion, said at the time that the pay was the main reason he returned to coal mining despite the dangers. "My wife and kids don't want me to ever go back, but what are you supposed to do? You either work in the woods around here or in the coal mines or you work for Hardee's or McDonald's or something like that, and then you don't make enough money to live," he said. Jones, 51, is survived his wife, two children and five grandchildren. Gov. Jim Justice's office called the death "especially heartbreaking" because "this family has been devastated twice in the last 11 years by losing loved ones in the mines." The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration confirmed the fatality Friday at the Carter Roag Coal Co. mine. No other information about the circumstances of Jones' death was immediately released. Carter Roag is owned by Metinvest, a mining and metals firm headquartered in Ukraine. The federal agency said it's the sixth coal mining death in West Virginia this year, up from three killed on the job last year. Twelve coal miners have been killed nationwide so far this year, up from eight in 2016. A Conversation With ITIF About the State of Federal Government Websites

30:28
At the beginning of 2017, the ITIF (Information Technology and Innovation Foundation) released a report that benchmarked 300 federal websites in four areas: page-load speed, mobile friendliness, security and accessibility. Some sites fared better than others, but the report highlighted that our federal sites have a ways to go (DigitalGov included) in these areas. Looking at these four metrics is important as they directly impact our customers’ first perceptions of the quality of our government’s digital services. Since it’s been nearly six months since the report was released, we wanted to check in with ITIF and see what they’ve learned, what they’ve heard from agencies and what their future plans are to build on this research. ITIF will also discuss their report and methodology behind it.

It is divided into 16 administrative subdivisions, covering an area of 312,696 square kilometres (120,733 sq mi), and has a largely temperate seasonal climate. With a population of approximately 38.5 million people, Poland is the sixth most populous member state of the European Union. Poland's capital and largest metropolis is Warsaw. Other major cities include Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk and Szczecin. The establishment of the Polish state can be traced back to A.D. 966, when Mieszko I, ruler of the realm coextensive with the territory of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented its longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest (about 1 million km2) and most populous countries of 16th- and 17th-century Europe, with a uniquely liberal political system which adopted Europe's first written national constitution, the Constitution of 3 May 1791. More than a century after the Partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century, Poland regained its independence in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles. In September 1939, World War II started with the invasion of Poland by Germany, followed by the Soviet Union invading Poland in accordance with the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. More than six million Polish citizens perished in the war. In 1947, the Polish People's Republic was established as a satellite state under Soviet influence. In the aftermath of the Revolutions of 1989, most notably through the emergence of the Solidarity movement, the sovereign state of Poland reestablished itself as a presidential democratic republic. Poland is a developed market and regional power. It has the eighth largest and one of the most dynamic economies in the European Union, simultaneously achieving a very high rank on the Human Development Index. Additionally, the Polish Stock Exchange in Warsaw is the largest and most important in Central Europe. Poland is a developed country, which maintains a high-income economy along with very high standards of living, life quality, safety, education and economic freedom. Poland has a developed school educational system. The country provides free university education, state-funded social security and a universal health care system for all citizens. Poland has 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 14 of which are cultural. Poland is a m ...

It was established as an independent kingdom from a series of land concessions acquired by an Englishman, James Brooke, from the Sultanate of Brunei. The kingdom received recognition as an independent state from the United States in 1850, and from the United Kingdom in 1864. Following recognition, Brooke expanded the kingdom territory at the expense of Brunei. Several major rebellions occurred against his rule, causing him to be plagued by debt incurred in countering the rebellions, and the sluggish economic situation at the time. His nephew, Charles Brooke, succeeded James and normalised the situation by improving the economy, reducing government debts and establishing public infrastructure. The kingdom was made a British protectorate in 1888. To gear up economic growth, the second Rajah encouraged the migration of Chinese workers from China and Singapore to work in the agricultural fields. With proper economic planning and stability, Sarawak prospered and emerged as one of the world's major producers of black pepper, in addition to oil and the introduction of rubber plantations. He was succeeded by his son Charles Vyner Brooke but World War II and the arrival of Japanese forces ultimately brought an end to the Raj and the Protectorate administration, with the territory placed under a military administration on the Japanese capitulation in 1945, and ceded to Britain as a Crown Colony in 1946. The area now forms the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2), the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area and slightly smaller than the entire continent of Europe's 3.9 million square miles (10.1 million km2). With a population of over 325 million people, the U.S. is the third most populous country. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city by population is New York City. Forty-eight states and the capital's federal district are contiguous in North America between Canada and Mexico. The State of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The State of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate, and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.Paleo-Indians migrated from Siberia to the North American mainland at least 15,000 years ago. European colonization began in the 16th century. The United States emerged from the thirteen British colonies established along the East Coast. Numerous disputes between Great Britain and the colonies following the French and Indian War led to the American Revolution, which began in 1775, and the subsequent Declaration of Independence in 1776. The war ended in 1783 with the United States becoming the first country to gain independence from a European power. The current constitution was adopted in 1788, with the first ten amendments, collectively named the Bill of Rights, being ratified in 1791 to guarantee many fundamental civil liberties. The United States embarked on a vigorous expansion across North America throughout the 19th century, acquiring new territories, displacing Native American tribes, and gradually admitting new states until it spanned the continent by 1848. During the second half of the 19th century, the Civil War led to the abolition of slavery. By the end of the century, the United States had extended into the Pacific Ocean, and its economy, driven in large part by the Industrial Revolution, began to soar. The Spanish–American War and World War I confirmed the country's status as a global military power. The United States emerged from World War II as a global superpower, the first country to develop nuclear weapons, the only country to use them in warfare, and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union competed in the Space Race, culminating with the 1969 moon landing. The end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 left the United States as the world's sole superpower. The United States is the world's oldest surviving federation. It is a federal republic and a representative democracy, "in which majority rule is tempered by minority rights protected by law". The United States is a founding member of the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organization of American States (OAS), and other international organizations. The United States is a highly developed country, with the world's largest economy by nominal GDP and second-largest economy by PPP, accounting for approximately a quarter of global GDP. The U.S. economy is largely post-industrial, characterized by the dominance of services and knowledge-based activities, although the manufacturing sector remains the second-largest in the world. The United States is the world's largest importer and the second largest exporter of goods, by value. Although its population is only 4.3% of the world total, t ...
