Success for Teens | Chapter 1

02:27
The little things matter. "Every day, every hour, every moment of your life, you face a choice. You can take a simple, positive action or you can you can take a simple, negative action". In this video, Sam Chang explains chapter 1 in the popular book, "Success for Teens". So the first chapter talks about the little things and how they mattered and introduces four key points that we should remember as teenagers from all ages as well. So point number one talks about these little things how everyday, every hour and every moment we face a choice. This choice between either face them positively or negatively. I think this is a really key point in facing our life especially in high school because we have a lot of decisions and these little things really do matter. The second point talks about how knowing what to do isn't the same as doing it. Oftentimes we have the knowledge of knowing what to or how to do things we don't necessarily go and commit these actions and make these right choices. It's important to have the motivation to actually do these things to get these things done. Point number three talks about the ripple effect as the book shows us. These are the small positive things and lead to opportunities in the future that we can grasp and hopefully gain by doing these small things. Point number four talks about making these right choices at the right moment when we're given these opportunities we can make those choices make this positive decisions and hopefully our future will come positively as well. Now this book talks about defining our own success, creating our own philosophy, creating a positive attitude that we can go and and tackle life. The college application is all about these little things these little small things. Now on the college application you see there' ten slots for extracurricular activities and ten is actually a lot. So in order for us to have a successful application we need to do the small things in order to compile on this application list. Now it's really important that in our high school we accomplish all ten of these things because the top applicants are able to fill all turned on the slots. That's just a little bit about the college application and hopefully I'll review a little bit more about my college experiences in the next coming videos. If you wanna grab a copy of this book which I think you should, please call us at 800-637-8170 or visit our website FreeTeenBook.com

Truth and Consequences: The Repercussions of Substance Use for Teens and Their Families

04:52
Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours Simulates the Repercussions of Substance Use for Teens and Their Families When you support Extension, youth and their families realize the legal, health, emotional and financial consequences of substance abuse. Drug overdose deaths now exceeded motor vehicle accidents as the primary cause of accidental deaths in the state of Kentucky. Overdose deaths, arrests, court cases and financial loss impact youth directly and indirectly. Epidemiological data reflected that Clinton County had a high need and low resources to divert prescription abuse. Community discussion developed a strategic plan for the Clinton County Alliance for Prescription Drug Diversion, a grant funded initiative through the Kentucky Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Prevention. The idea for Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours (T&C) developed from Extension and the community partners. T&C directs students through a role-play of substance abuse scenarios and interact with community partners such as judges, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, and counseling/treatment providers. At each event, approximately 20 community partners share the reality of what students would experience if he/she committed the substance abuse related behavior. Parents and volunteers such as Extension Homemakers members accompany students as they participate in the scenarios. The enrichment program is designed to show students the health, legal, financials, and other consequences associated with both legal and illicit substance abuse. Since 2007, 905 freshman students at Clinton County High School have participated in Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours , 443 parents and community partners have participated in the program in Clinton County. According to the Kentucky Incentive for Prevention (KIP) School Survey , Clinton County youth have increased their perception of risk for tobacco, marijuana, prescription, and alcohol use. The rate of school law and board violations for tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs has declined from 25.78 in 2004-05 to 9.22 in 2008-09 (Kentucky Center for School Safety). 2012 Kentucky State Police data indicates that juvenile DUI arrest rates have declined. 2013 Kids Count data documents that more youth have been successfully diverted from the juvenile justice system (21 in 2007 compared to 52 in 2012). Kids Count data also reveals that the number of deaths of teens ages 15-19 declined from 2005 to 2009. The success of the Clinton County program resulted in Family and Consumer Science Extension creating the T&C curriculum and evaluation materials and training Extension agents across the state on conducting the program in their counties. In 2015, T&C was presented in thirty-seven Kentucky counties. Of those counties who reported evaluation data, 66% of students had not talked to a parent or guardian about the dangers of substance abuse within the past 12 months. After participating in the event, 86.64% of students had better understanding of legal consequences of substance use and abuse and 84.79% of the students had a better understanding of the emotional consequences of substance use and abuse. •“As my first experience, I thought the professionals did a wonderful job at portraying the “real life” scenarios and offered wonderful advice to our youth. As a parent of a freshman I hope she took away as much from this experience as I have. I know listening to Junior (parole officer) really tugged at her heart and hopefully will impact the decisions she makes throughout her life. Once again….Thanks!”-- Parent 2014 •“Truth and Consequences is a powerful deterrent in preventing teen drug use. It’s not a scare tactic-it is reality.”- School Health Education Teacher 2009 •“I always enjoy it when I hear students say that my mother always told me that but I didn’t believe her. It validates what parents are telling them when it comes from someone from the community like a police officer or court worker.” Diverted Prescription Grant Coordinator 2010 •“I think it’s one of the most beneficial programs that I’ve ever participated in with the youth in our county. I believe we are seeing success because of this and what young people are seeing in the scenarios and demonstrations.”-Minister 2011 •“It really hit me when I watched my son in the mock accident following the scenarios. We really need to communicate and I believe this program is a way we are communicating, not just to the kids but to the parents and the community.”- Director of Pupil Personnel 2009 State Stat

Why we are unhappy Part 2: The Social Media Effect

08:13
By Chantal Spies Author of the novel "Magic" www.magicbychantalspies.com We live in a digital world where we are constantly exposed to other people’s success and their fame. But most of the time the success what we’re seeing on Facebook and Instagram is not real! It is something called perceived reality. But here we are thinking, Gosh! Everybody else have unicorns and tequila fountains except me! We feel like losers! But we don’t want to look like losers. So what do we do- we make fake unicorns. We take a donkey, a cone, some glitter, take a picture, post it on Instagram, say: “look at my unicorn” hashtag #blessed. But people it doesn’t stop here either! This recession had a ripple effect into other areas of our lives- such as our relationships and our bodies. We think: well I might not have the perfect career, but I can find the perfect partner- because that I have control over. All I need to do to get the perfect partner is to have the perfect body. And we have become obsessed with perfection! We don’t want mortals for boyfriends anymore- we want gods! And thanks to social media and wonderful little dating apps such as Tinder we have a larger and broader choice. Back in the day if you were lucky, you maybe met a 100 people during your entire life. And if just one of that 100 people was roughly the same age as you and not a complete weirdo then you scored big time! Happily ever after, bed of roses, moonlight, valentine guaranteed for life! But now we have quantity and not quality and we refuse to settle for anything less than perfect. So after all that swiping you finally go on a date- the guy is practically perfect, but he likes camping- SWIPE! You go on another date, the guy is practically perfect, doesn’t like camping, but then he orders a white wine with his steak. SWIPE! You go on another date, the guy is practically perfect and he doesn’t like camping, but then he orders no wine because he doesn’t drink. SWIPE! And people, please, I am not judging here- I’m on Tinder. I’m embarrassed to say that, but hey- a girls gotta eat. Oh and our cellphones is another thing about our generation it has caused us the inability to properly communicate with each other with its stupid instant messaging. Do you know what miss? What I really, really miss? And if you’re of my generation them I KNOW that deep down in your heart you miss this too- and that is to be CALLED on a fricken landline and have a nice, normal conversation! Not this snapchat “hey baby you awake” BULL crap. And what is up with complete and utter strangers sending you dick pics? Men! Why? It is not exactly nice when you’re sitting at work, drinking coffee with your colleagues and you get a message and you’re like- oh who is this? Let me see. Press play and aararagahahahha. NO! Make it stop. So why have we lost the inability to communicate properly? Because in the real world, when you have a real conversation with a real person you do not have the luxury of time to think of something witty to say, you don’t have a digital screen to hide behind, you can’t apply a fricken filter. It’s not like you can go on a date and be all like I will have the carpaccio salad, dressing on the side, and a Mayfair filter for my face. It doesn’t work that way. Ladies you are gonna have to BB, CC, DD, EE cream like a mofo, you’re gonna have to buy that body suit at the Hema (which is amaaazing by the way). And this brings me to the body obsession part. So when we finally manage to find the courage to DO move away from our screens and go on a date, then we are so darn scared that people might see that we are not perfect. I have friends who won’t go to the beach, because then they have to wear a swimsuit and they are petrified that someone should see that they have 3 bumps op cellulite on their one thigh. Or women who are too embarrass to let their own husbands and their own boyfriends see them naked- because god forbid their husband with his dad bod should find out she is not a Victoria Secret model. You know what I am scared off? More than being chopped into pieces by a serial killer? Carbs! I am scared of carbs. It is ridiculous! But do you know what we fear more than carbs? Rejection. We fight for perfection because we think if we are perfect no one will reject us, that we will matter. Because we are the generation with the BIGGEST egos! And the bigger the ego the easier it is for it to get hurt. So we play it safe- we pretend that we don’t care, that we’re emotionally unavailable, that we just want to keep things casual. A generation of Star Trek Vulcans! And we fail miserably at being human and having relationships because our pride has gotten bigger than our hearts and because we are driven by our egos and no longer by love. But, there IS a solution! There IS hope. And in my next video I will tell you how I think we can do this.

In this video Khailee expresses that when most people embark on a big mission, be it starting a business or a social cause, they will face a couple of 'frequently-faced obstacles'. While most people prescribe a set of habits, qualities, or tactics to overcome these obstacles, Khailee discovered that they can be overcome, or even prevented when you shift your focus from solving the problem itself to shifting the context altogether. After being involved in over 40 fast-growth technology startups as a founder, advisor, or investor, Khailee identified 3 specific 'context-shifts' that will help anyone who is on a mission, and shares these shifts in a visually unique and memorable way. Khailee Ng co-founded group buying site GroupsMore.com. Launched in 3 weeks, it grew it to largest player in Malaysia in 3 months, and was then sold to Groupon. He also co-founded SAYS.com, a social news company in Southeast Asia, and grew it into a fast-growing, profitable business with some of the biggest brands in the world as returning customers. See incredible entrepreneurs like Khailee live at Awesomeness Fest. Awesomeness Fest is a global non-profit, transformational event that brings together people who are driven to change the world-- entrepreneurs, authors, technophiles, mavericks, artists and visionaries alike. Oprah's POWERFUL Secret to SUCCESS Using The Law Of Attraction - Oprah Winfrey Show

This movie, The Secret, was created by Australian Rhonda Byrne, and she says that if you follow its philosophy, you can create the life you want—whether that means getting out of debt, finding a more fulfilling job or even falling in love. Rhonda says she stumbled on what she calls The Secret at the end of 2004. At the time, everything in Rhonda's life had fallen apart—physically, emotionally and financially—and she was in "total despair." Then her father died suddenly, and she was worried about her grief-stricken mother. "I wept and wept and wept, and I didn't want my daughter to see me sobbing," Rhonda says. That's when Rhonda's daughter gave her a copy of The Science of Getting Rich, a book written in 1910 by Wallace D. Wattles. "Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it," Rhonda says. "It gave me a glimpse of The Secret. It was like a flame inside of my heart. And with every day since, it's just become a raging fire of wanting to share all of this with the world." After that first discovery, Rhonda read hundreds of books, listened to hundreds of hours of audio tapes and scoured the Internet for more information. She says she traced the idea of The Secret through history—all the way from 3500 B.C. to the present day. "Since I discovered The Secret, every single moment of my entire life has changed, and I am living my life for the first time," Rhonda says. Rhonda defines The Secret as the law of attraction, which is the principle that "like attracts like." Rhonda calls it "the most powerful law in the universe," and says it is working all the time. "What we do is we attract into our lives the things we want, and that is based on what we're thinking and feeling," Rhonda says. The principle explains that we create our own circumstances by the choices we make in life. And the choices we make are fueled by our thoughts—which means our thoughts are the most powerful things we have here on earth. To help teach the philosophy, Rhonda created the DVD The Secret, which features experts including the Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith, James Arthur Ray, Lisa Nichols and Jack Canfield—who not only teach other people about The Secret, but say they are successful in their own lives because they know and use the principle. The law of attraction means that everything that happens to you—good or bad—you attract to yourself. Everything you focus on can have an effect on your life—from books to magazines to thoughts. Trump Supporters Admit They Were “Stupid” & “Tricked By The Devil” As They Face Financial Ruin

Many Trump supporters in the Midwest are starting to realize how stupid their decision to vote for Donald really was. And those are the words that THEY are using. Now, that is an exact quote from one of the Trump supporters that this newspaper interviewed. Another admitted that he feels stupid for falling for all of Donald Trump's lies. Now, this is not the typical Trump voters finally expressing remorse for their vote story. This story is actually a little bit more detailed and involved. The reason that these people feel like they have been tricked or feel like they're stupid for voting for Donald Trump is because they are the ones who are being directly affected in a negative way by Donald Trump's policies. The people that this paper spoke to, the Lexington Herald Leader, they're landscapers, they're farmers, they're people who rely on the H2B visa guest worker program who now may have to close down their businesses, shut down their landscaping organization, shut down their farms, because they can't get any workers because of decisions from the Trump administration to limit those programs and limit the amount of workers that come over here to the United States. These are jobs according to the Trump supporters that other people, American citizens don't want to take. Either because they don't pay enough, because the hours are too long, or because the work is just a little too strenuous and difficult. Guest workers, they're willing to do anything because they desperately need that money. That's why they come over here and do it. Yes, it's wrong that they get taken advantage of by companies that do this, pay slave wages and give them horrible working conditions with no benefits, but Americans aren't willing to do the work. It's work that has to be done. These businesses fund their communities. When they get money, they go and spend that money at another local small business, and so on and so forth. It's the ripple effect through the entire economy. Now these people understand that the policies that Donald Trump, both with the guest worker program and with the tariffs that he is imposing that are hurting farmers all across this country, they know that he's screwed them over and that he doesn't care about them. Yeah, this story is a little bit different. It's not the typical CNN panel of Trump voters who say, "I don't like him anymore. The porn star thing threw me off." These are people who understand that voting has consequences. Believing the lies of a Republican can and will directly affect your financial livelihood. These people could lose everything that they have built their entire lives for, because they voted for a bigot who wants to keep immigrants out of this country for other people, because keep in mind, Donald Trump appears to only be hiring foreign guest workers at his properties, but that's not good enough for anybody else. It's only good enough for Donald Trump. You want to make your business successful? You got to bump your pay up, offer benefits, and pay more money so these American citizens will want to take those jobs. Yes, we should be doing that anyway. I also understand that there are some industries where it's not possible. Lawn maintenance is one of them.

Emotional Intelligence - Part 5 (Last)

04:52
This is the last part of my 'The Art of Social Interaction' Series. In this video, I touched based on Emotional Intelligence. 🤩🤩 Emotional intelligence separate top achievers from the rest of the pack. In your personal life, they play a significant role in your health and quality of life; to your happiness, to the quality of your relationships and to living on purpose. The art of social interaction is dying, and it’s our duty to make sure it doesn’t! With social media booming, we, as human beings, are disconnected more than ever with reality. Social engagement is slipping away for many people, especially for young teens and adults, ranging from the age of 18 to 30-year-olds, the Millennials - OUR FUTURE LEADERS! Social support and social interaction are one of the most important factors in predicting the physical health and well-being of everyone, ranging from kids to older adults. This type of subject isn't as glamorous as being an entrepreneur. Being an entrepreneur is associated with money and fame for many people, so of course, it's attractive. But to be a successful entrepreneur or anyone for that matter, you need to master the art of social interaction and be socially aware. How could I spread Social Awareness to the younger generation and others who would find this topic stale and boring? After much thoughts, since the human minds have a short attention span than goldfish (sad face), the best way is through video! I had to make my videos engaging and funny, with short clips that would help paint a picture. View the series based on The Art of Interaction: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBsfeVigIYpMpwsMgxNoBUiVRdvJWw5Do Social Interaction is a valuable skill and stepping stone if you would like to be successful and succeed! We could excel in every aspect of our lives. From school, to work to home, we can create more fulfilling relationships with our friends, families and peers. Without it, we can't be as content as we would like. As humans, we all want to be connected, no matter how 'cool' or 'fly' you are. When we connect and show compassion to others, it creates a ripple effect of positivity all around. The only way to spread social awareness and get others show their real potential is to lead by example. Thanks for watching! Love, C Dang. Bob Sima Album Trailer - The Movers The Shakers and The Peacemakers

07:45
MARYLAND-BASED MUSICIAN HAS SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT ON HIS 8TH ALBUM RELEASE Title Track of Sima’s New Album Won a 2017 Global Peace Song Award Prior to the Official Album Release Bob Sima continues his musical mission of opening hearts and inspiring a national audience with his 8th studio album, The Movers The Shakers and The Peacemakers. The album is a collection of songs, intentions, mantras, and reveries all supporting the central theme of ‘Healed People’ that Sima sees happening across the world. Our current state of affairs appears so divisive among politics and corporations, as greed and the concepts of “power” and “control” drive both a silent disbelief and a highly emotional response at the same time. But if you look beyond the media and lawmakers, and into the hearts and minds of your local community, there are good news stories in overflowing abundance. When you seek out accounts of unity and humans supporting humans, you will find them. Not only will you notice them, you will want to be part of your own good news story. We simply have to be motivated to want to believe there is love and compassion all around us and we will soon see it - and be it - everywhere. The healing begins. As Sima quotes, ”I feel like music is such a powerful tool to bring us out of darkness. Keep in mind that I first write these songs for me and then I get to share them with you.” Recorded at Sima’s home studio in Annapolis and engineered by Airtime Studios in Bloomington Indiana, The Movers The Shakers and The Peacemakers is a collection of conscientiously well-written songs that sway from rock to folk, from sacred to vulnerable, from emotional to empowering. Most important to Sima is the message of each song. How it comes through musically is simply icing on the cake. Sima doesn’t read music and has never formally studied instrument or voice, yet he knows exactly how to pull together the lyrics and the vibe of each song to take the listener into their heart and inspire change instantly. Sima’s albums always have deeper messages, but the particular collection of songs on The Movers The Shakers and The Peacemakers reaches new depths of the healing and growth that we - as the human race - are challenged by and with throughout our lives. It all leads to a place where we can then serve others and initiate the ripple effect of shifts and transformations within homes, communities, states, regions, countries, and the world. There is not one song on this album that will not find a place in your heart. We are all learning the same life lessons, regardless of how they might appear in our lives. We are all trying to create a unified effort to love and support each other in this world. We may believe that we fall short, but as each person has their own awarenesses and revelations about their own personal journey, everyone they touch is affected. Sima is changing the world one song at a time, as evidenced with the 2017 Global Peace Song Award for the title track. One listen to The Movers The Shakers and The Peacemakers is all it takes to accelerate your own healing adventure. Check Bob’s website for upcoming events and links to social media channels. The Movers The Shakers and The Peacemakers is available at www.bobsima.com, iTunes, and CD Baby. Sima is a nationally-touring singer-songwriter based in Annapolis Maryland. When Sima opens his mouth to sing, what emerges is far beyond the human sounds of his warm and soulful voice. It’s a call, a remembrance, a soft and steady place to land. Sima’s concerts are a musical satsang or gathering of truth that navigate the audience on a profound musical journey every time. He and his partner, Shannon Plummer, are creative collaborators. Shannon - as a powerful healing presence, spiritual teacher, intentional creation coach, artist and singer; and Bob - as a singer-songwriter, spiritual teacher and musical mystic. Together they amplify each other's talents as they weave their individual gifts into a divine combination of music, harmony, wisdom, joy, and presence that will lead the soul into truth. They offer keynote presentations, concerts, music meditations, workshops, and retreats around the country. Give Your Support-Liza Pavlakos Foundation- Help this cause

03:05
Thank you for wanting to find out more about the non-profit Liza Pavlakos Foundation and why you should support it. Why I started the Foundation I started it not just because, having triumphed over powerlessness to become a self-made millionaire entrepreneur, I now want to help others turn their lives around too. It’s also not just because I am a persevering philanthropist at heart who wants to do all she can to empower others to live better lives. To put it simply, above all, it’s because I have a dream. A beautiful dream. To help fulfil the dreams of 1) millions of children who are doomed to a life of abject poverty in slums or are being raised in orphanages; 2) poor, disadvantaged women living in slums who need to be made financially independent; and 3) the victims of human trafficking who need to be reintegrated into society. The Liza Pavlakos Foundation is the powerful force that will enable caring individuals and organisations to join hands with me in providing support to those who need it the most. How your donations will help Your support, however small, could make a huge difference to the success of the Foundation. Your donations could: Help create awareness about the value of education in slums in different parts of the world Help build schools for imparting skills to youngsters in slums to become entrepreneurs and manage their lives better Pull slum children out of poverty and misery and get them into classrooms; lead them from ignorance to knowledge and literacy Ensure quality education and a holistic learning experience for orphans across the world, to help them get jobs and earn a decent living after they grow up Help bring joy and dignity into the lives of underprivileged children Help empower children deprived of basic human needs and a family of their own today to become self-reliant members of society and better citizens of the world tomorrow Help victims of human trafficking live independently as useful members of society by empowering them with education and work skills Philanthropic projects I am currently committed to helping: CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S INTEGRATED EDUCATION PROJECT SUMMARY: The Liza Pavlakos Foundation is a non-profit organisation working to eradicate intergenerational poverty by providing education and welfare for women and children in urban slums. Over the past one year, Liza Pavlakos has been working closely with Kindle Africa, a non-profit organisation working with vulnerable women in Makoko, a community in Lagos labelled as the world’s largest floating slum. These women are largely unemployed and without skills for employment. As a result of their economic dependence, they undergo extreme episodes of domestic violence. There is a high maternal mortality rate too because the women also do not have money to register for prenatal and postnatal care, depending largely on local midwives who are not sufficiently skilled to birth children when there are delivery complications. In addition to this, the women are often indebted to moneylenders and are unable to provide education, healthcare or even healthy meals for their children. This results in high rates of child labour. The children provide for their family at the expense of their childhood. Makoko doesn’t have basic facilities such as bathrooms and toilets. Worst hit by the unsanitary practice of open defecation are the women and children in the community who die of preventable diseases because they do not have money to visit a hospital. All the above stated problems, account for high rates of prostitution which has a ripple effect leading to teenage pregnancies, early marriages, prevalent HIV rates, and low educational levels of the girls. In January 2017, we embarked on a Sustainable Women Entrepreneurial and Empowerment Project (SWEEP MAKOKO) with the overall goal of facilitating job creation and providing employment opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged women in Makoko through skill acquisition, life skills, and basic formal education. The Liza Pavlakos Foundation aims to raise $14,000 USD for the continuation of the SWEEP Makoko project whose goal is to equip 200 women with skills in garment production every year for a period of 10 years. The venue of the project will also create a safe space for discussing issues affecting women in the Makoko community. The project is designed to achieve the targets – 1, 4, 5 and 8 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals which are: ending poverty everywhere, quality education, gender equality, and economic growth for all. Join us in the pledge to make a difference in the lives of the women of the Makoko slums.

Depression and anxiety: How inequality is driving the mental health crisis | Johann Hari

04:28
Expressions like "feeling down" or "feeling low" are more literal than we think, says Lost Connections author Johann Hari. A 30-year field study of wild African baboons by the incredible Stanford University professor Robert Sapolsky has shown that there is a remarkable relationship between depression, anxiety, and social hierarchies. Male baboons—who live in a very strict pecking order—suffer the most psychological stress when their social status is insecure, or when they are on the bottom rung, looking up at the luxuries of others. Does it sound familiar yet? "If you live in the United States... we’re at the greatest levels of inequality since the 1920s," says Hari. "There’s a few people at the very top, there’s a kind of precarious middle, and there’s a huge and swelling bottom." It's no coincidence that mental health gets poorer as the wealth gap continues to widen: depression and anxiety are socioeconomic diseases. The silver lining is that this relationship has been discovered. Could an economic revolution end the depression epidemic? And, most curiously, what can we learn from the Amish on this front? Johann Hari is the author of Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions. And as I was learning about the causes of depression and anxiety for my book 'Lost Connections' I started to realize—I don’t think that’s a metaphor. There’s this amazing professor at Stanford called Robert Sapolsky who, in his early twenties, went to live with a troop of baboons in Kenya. And it was his job to figure out: when are baboons most stressed out? So his job was to hit them with little tranquilizer darts and then take a blood test and measure something called cortisol, which is a hormone that baboons and us release when we’re stressed. And baboons live in this hierarchy—so the females don’t, interestingly—but the men live in a very strict hierarchy. So if there’s 30 men, number one knows he’s above number two. Number two knows he’s above number three. Number 12 knows he’s above number 13. And that really determines a lot; it determines who you get to have sex with, it determines what you get to eat, it determines whether you get to sit in the shade or you’re pushed out into the heat. So really it's significant where you are in the hierarchy. And what Professor Sapolsky found is that baboons are most stressed in two situations. One is when their status is insecure. So if you’re the top guy and someone’s circling which comes for you, you will be massively stressed. And the other situation is when you feel you’re at the bottom of the hierarchy, you’ve been kind of humiliated. And what Professor Sapolsky noticed—and then it was later developed by other scientists—is, when you feel you’ve been pushed to the bottom, what you do is you show something called a submission gesture. So you, baboons will raise— I say “you,” I assume no baboons are watching this, maybe they are—a baboon will put its body down physically or put it’s head down or put its bottom in the air and it will cover its head. So it’s clearly seems to be communicating: “Just leave me alone. You’ve beaten me, okay? You’ve beaten me.” And what lots of scientists, like Professor Paul Gilbert in Britain and Professor Kate Pickett and Professor Richard Wilkinson, also in Britain, have really developed is this idea that actually what human depression is, in part—not entirely, but in part—is a form of a submission gesture. It’s a way of saying, “I can’t cope with this anymore,” right. Particularly people who feel they’ve been pushed to the bottom of hierarchies. Or who feel, if you remember the other stressful situations when your status is insecure, it’s a way of just going, “Okay, I retreat. I don’t want this fight anymore. You’ve beaten me.” It’s a kind of very strong evolutionary impulse where you feel you’re under attack, to just submit in the hope that the stress and anxiety will then go away, that the sources of the stress and anxiety will then go away. And one thing that’s so important, and that’s what Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson really developed, is they’ve shown that as inequality grows, depression and anxiety grow. They’ve shown this is a very robust effect, right. This helps us to explain it. If you live in Norway your status is relatively secure, right. No one’s that high, no one’s that low. Movement between where you are is not so extreme.

TEDxBloomington - Shawn Achor - "The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"

12:29
Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard. His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations. Achor graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a BA in English and Religion and earned a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School in Christian and Buddhist ethics. Now he is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers-people who are well above average-to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures. In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up. www.goodthinkinc.com About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBloomington, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBloomington event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
