Elberta Slant Road - Elberta, UT

01:59
For the full trail guide please visit: https://www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/2095-elberta-slant-road The Tintic Mining District is rich with history dating back to the 1860's. It wasn't until June 24th, 1882 when the Union Pacific completed its line to the Tintic District. Mining crescendoed into the 80's and 90's but hit an economic crash in the 1920's. Slowly, the small mining towns started disappearing. Until this day, only two towns remain; Eureka and Mammoth. The railway was abandoned and left to weather. Now, the railway is almost forgotten and vanished with the exception of a few feet of tracks near the trailhead, some supporting structures, and one awesome tunnel. The tunnel is one of three, but the others were closed due to structural and safety reasons. It still stand tall and the trail heads straight into it. About midway through the trail, you enter a valley where, at one point in time, held one of the greatest architectural feats in the country in regards to the railway system: A double circle (as seen at waypoint 9). This allowed the trains to climb high in elevation to get over the crest without much straight forward travel. As of now, you are only able to see blocks of concrete where the trestles used to stand. Although this road may be less than exciting in regards to obstacles, its history is more than enough to keep you wanting to explore more. Tintic Mountains High Point

At the tri-county border (Utah, Juab, Tooele), there is this tough hill climb that's worse coming down (as in the video) than going up. Part way down, I caught a boulder that lodged under my machine.. and I ended up dragging it down the hill with me (hence the conversation at the bottom).

Magna Flyover

01:06
Historically a company town for Kennecott Copper, Magna lies on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley and provides significant opportunities for nearby larger metropolitan centers. Magna's Main Street, lined with quaint century-old brick buildings, was once the center of a Kennecott Copper company town and a vibrant shopping district. Though the street has since experienced decades of decline, recent public investments along Main Street have been significant and include a new library, senior center, and pedestrian-scale street enhancements: new curb and gutter, wide new sidewalks, street trees, and lighting. A bus rapid transit line connects the township to the region's light rail system, giving Magna convenient access to downtown Salt Lake City and other regional destinations. The Envisioning Centers process enabled residents and Main Street business owners to explore options for Magna's Main Street area. Together, they developed a vision, Cultivating Community, Captivating Main Street, which emphasizes Magna's historic character and existing assets, and a desire to provide a family-friendly place for living, shopping, and entertainment.

Ghost Towns in Utah, United States - Abandoned Village, Town or City | Part 1

01:31
Thanks for watching..... 1) Bingham Canyon 2) Caineville 3) Castle Gate 4) Cisco 5) Colton 6) Delle 7) Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge 8) Frisco 9) Fruita 10) Fry Canyon 11) Gold Hill 12) Grafton 13) Hiawatha 14) Hite 15) Home of Truth 16) Iosepa Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ghost_towns_in_Utah The exact definition of a ghost town varies between individuals, and between cultures. Some writers discount settlements that were abandoned as a result of a natural or human-made disaster, using the term only to describe settlements which were deserted because they were no longer economically viable; T. Lindsey Baker, author of Ghost Towns of Texas, defines a ghost town as "a town for which the reason for being no longer exists".[1] Some believe that any settlement with visible tangible remains should not be called a ghost town;[2] others say, conversely, that a ghost town should contain the tangible remains of buildings.[3] Whether or not the settlement must be completely deserted, or may contain a small population, is also a matter for debate.[2] Generally, though, the term is used in a looser sense, encompassing any and all of these definitions. The American author Lambert Florin's preferred definition of a ghost town was simply "a shadowy semblance of a former self". Factors leading to abandonment of towns include depleted natural resources, economic activity shifting elsewhere, railroads and roads bypassing or no longer accessing the town, human intervention, disasters, massacres, wars, and the shifting of politics or fall of empires.[5] A town can also be abandoned when it is part of an exclusion zone due to natural or man-made causes. Ghost towns may result when the single activity or resource that created a boomtown (e.g., nearby mine, mill or resort) is depleted or the resource economy undergoes a "bust" (e.g., catastrophic resource price collapse). Boomtowns can often decrease in size as fast as they initially grew. Sometimes, all or nearly the entire population can desert the town, resulting in a ghost town. The dismantling of a boomtown can often occur on a planned basis. Mining companies nowadays will create a temporary community to service a mine site, building all the accommodation shops and services, and then remove it as the resource is worked out. A gold rush would often bring intensive but short-lived economic activity to a remote village, only to leave a ghost town once the resource was depleted. In some cases, multiple factors may remove the economic basis for a community; some former mining towns on U.S. Route 66 suffered both mine closures when the resources were depleted and loss of highway traffic as US 66 was diverted away from places like Oatman, Arizona onto a more direct path. The Middle East has many ghost towns that were created when the shifting of politics or the fall of empires caused capital cities to be socially or economically non-viable, such as Ctesiphon. Barlow Canyon Mines - Eureka, Utah

03:00
Definitely a worth while spur off of Barlow Canyon, this road leads to one of the best mines in the area. The road up it really nice, although only half a mile long. Once you are at the top of the trail, there is a mine back to the left in the rock. You can see where the old entrance used to be, an open gated entrance, and a grate over another shaft. If you venture the other direction from the road, you will see some tailings from that mine. This a recording made on June 30, 2012 at the cemetery in Sego Canyon. The static you hear is the SB7 radio scanner set at 100ms. The pops you hear are a result of the extremely sensitive digital recorder being adjusted for sensitivity. I begin by reading the names of everyone on the family headstone for the Sulley (spelling?) family. Then we hear "hi". Later in the recording I introduce myself by saying my first name...and then we hear a response. I will not tell you what I think the girl says...but it has hit home with me that they know who we are on the other side. Pictures are minimal...but show some of the sights in Sego Canyon. First time out doing this...so learning curve.

Super Realistic HO Train Operations on Lee Nicholas’ Utah Colorado & Western

22:22
We return to the scene of the screwing around to review Lee Nicholas’ Utah Colorado & Western. This time taking a train over the line for Salt Lake to Denver as the dispatcher controls signals and train movement. ****************************************************** Lee uses a CTC Control System to control the main line and follows realistic operating rules including switch lists. The railroad is an amazing layout as well, now 50 year old!! Spangler backdrops, amazing structures and track work. ************************************************* Locomotives are individually radio controlled, only a fixed voltage is on the rails. A unique now system just installed. AND Lee is now installing true scale HO switch stands!! ******************************************************** From the web site: The history of the HO scale UCW, located in my basement, started in 1970. The layout and the basement have endured a number of rebuilds over the years. The layout now occupies an area 30 x 33 feet (roughly the original size of the basement), and the crew lounge, dispatch office and shop area occupy a 14 x 25 foot space excavated after we added on to our house in the late 70's. It would have been easier to excavate before we built onto the house but not nearly as much fun. I highly recommend completing all that before starting the railroad building process. Anyway, the UCW survived and it now occupies the entire downstairs. The last major modifications started in October of 1995, when two of the four peninsulas, Crusero to Cobre, were completely removed and rebuilt. This was a tough decision to make because the prior layout was about 98% complete, and had operated in that state for a number of years. The overall foot print, of the layout, would not change so what were the driving factors in making the changes? A new staging/fiddle yard (MOLE), improved modeling skills, the chance to try out some new construction techniques, increase the layout height, add a helper district, more closely define the operating principals of the UCW, add new lighting and the opportunity to include some of my good friends and operators in the remodeling process were all the factors that were considered. I am fortunate to have some very talented individuals associated with the UCW. Kelly Newton, Jim French, Dave Schen, Jon Robinson, Bob Gilmore, Rob Spangler, Gary Waite and Rod Loder have all donated their time and talents to the project. Thanks also goes out to the rest of the UCW operating crew who have contributed and faithfully support the operation once a month. Kelly for his superb efforts in taking a few hundred pounds of plaster and several yards of cheesecloth and carving away everything that did not resemble rocks. He is also instrumental in providing input into the operational philosophy of the UCW. Rob as spent many hours painting the beautiful backdrops (See Keller Video #27 about the UTAH COLORADO WESTERN) that grace the layout. He and Kelly worked hand in hand while combing the 3-D and 2-D scenery elements. Dave and Bob have applied their talents to planting trees, building crib work, pouring rivers and adding hundreds of detail parts to enhance the scenery. Jim has applied his talents in building some of the kit and scratch built structures and signals, helping with track design and providing input into the operational philosophy behind the UCW. He also spent many hours authoring the UCW Timetable and Operating Rules handbook. Jon spent hundreds of hours designing, programming and building the first CTC computer interface. He spent untold hours and wore out the knees in more than one pair of pants, crawling around under the layout hooking everything up. Although his efforts provided the UCW with a reliable interface for a number of years we decided to install a system I could maintain and program and converted to Bruce Chubb's C/MRI system in 2000. Rod has been the inspiration behind the CTC machine's that have been and are in use on the UCW. He is also responsible for suggesting the current lighting source used on the layout.
