Humbug mine and Eureka mining town
There is a ton of history here with 4 towns in the area 3 of which are now abandoned.
Elberta Slant Road - Elberta, UT
For the full trail guide please visit: https://www.trailsoffroad.com/trails/2095-elberta-slant-road The Tintic Mining District is rich with history dating back to the 1860's. It wasn't until June 24th, 1882 when the Union Pacific completed its line to the Tintic District. Mining crescendoed into the 80's and 90's but hit an economic crash in the 1920's. Slowly, the small mining towns started disappearing. Until this day, only two towns remain; Eureka and Mammoth. The railway was abandoned and left to weather. Now, the railway is almost forgotten and vanished with the exception of a few feet of tracks near the trailhead, some supporting structures, and one awesome tunnel. The tunnel is one of three, but the others were closed due to structural and safety reasons. It still stand tall and the trail heads straight into it. About midway through the trail, you enter a valley where, at one point in time, held one of the greatest architectural feats in the country in regards to the railway system: A double circle (as seen at waypoint 9). This allowed the trains to climb high in elevation to get over the crest without much straight forward travel. As of now, you are only able to see blocks of concrete where the trestles used to stand. Although this road may be less than exciting in regards to obstacles, its history is more than enough to keep you wanting to explore more. Finding The Gass Mine
It was pure luck (and Mr McBride's nose) that brought us to this one as we had no idea of its existence... And it wasn’t just us – none of the local historians (including those that have written books on the mining history of this area) knew about this mine either when told about it. This mine eroded shut ages ago and had been lost to history. However, a particularly dry season in the area caused the soil to lose some of its cohesion, leading a portion of the roof of the mine to collapse and to expose its secrets. This provided just enough of an opening to the surface for us to discover this mine and for me to squeeze inside. Upon dropping into the mine, I realized that the collapse that revealed the mine was pretty recent and that no had been inside the mine for a very, very long time – probably at least for 100 years. It is an old mine, as one can clearly see the pick marks on the walls and no sign of any modern equipment. There was no sign that any ore cart rails had ever been present either as even in mines where the rails have been completely removed, one can still see the indentations where the ties were. So, it is quite possible that the miners lugged the ore and waste rock out by hand or by using animals. The timbers inside the mine were shriveled up and rotted away to almost nothing, indicating that they were extremely old. The artifacts we discovered around the mine dated to around the middle of the 1800s. And, judging by the size of the waste rock pile, this was a significant mine in its day. This was one of those extraordinary discoveries that a mine explorer lives for and, undoubtedly, this is the first video footage to ever emerge of this virgin mine. ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines

This a recording made on June 30, 2012 at the cemetery in Sego Canyon. The static you hear is the SB7 radio scanner set at 100ms. The pops you hear are a result of the extremely sensitive digital recorder being adjusted for sensitivity. I begin by reading the names of everyone on the family headstone for the Sulley (spelling?) family. Then we hear "hi". Later in the recording I introduce myself by saying my first name...and then we hear a response. I will not tell you what I think the girl says...but it has hit home with me that they know who we are on the other side. Pictures are minimal...but show some of the sights in Sego Canyon. First time out doing this...so learning curve.

Tintic Mountains High Point
At the tri-county border (Utah, Juab, Tooele), there is this tough hill climb that's worse coming down (as in the video) than going up. Part way down, I caught a boulder that lodged under my machine.. and I ended up dragging it down the hill with me (hence the conversation at the bottom).

Super Realistic HO Train Operations on Lee Nicholas’ Utah Colorado & Western
We return to the scene of the screwing around to review Lee Nicholas’ Utah Colorado & Western. This time taking a train over the line for Salt Lake to Denver as the dispatcher controls signals and train movement. ****************************************************** Lee uses a CTC Control System to control the main line and follows realistic operating rules including switch lists. The railroad is an amazing layout as well, now 50 year old!! Spangler backdrops, amazing structures and track work. ************************************************* Locomotives are individually radio controlled, only a fixed voltage is on the rails. A unique now system just installed. AND Lee is now installing true scale HO switch stands!! ******************************************************** From the web site: The history of the HO scale UCW, located in my basement, started in 1970. The layout and the basement have endured a number of rebuilds over the years. The layout now occupies an area 30 x 33 feet (roughly the original size of the basement), and the crew lounge, dispatch office and shop area occupy a 14 x 25 foot space excavated after we added on to our house in the late 70's. It would have been easier to excavate before we built onto the house but not nearly as much fun. I highly recommend completing all that before starting the railroad building process. Anyway, the UCW survived and it now occupies the entire downstairs. The last major modifications started in October of 1995, when two of the four peninsulas, Crusero to Cobre, were completely removed and rebuilt. This was a tough decision to make because the prior layout was about 98% complete, and had operated in that state for a number of years. The overall foot print, of the layout, would not change so what were the driving factors in making the changes? A new staging/fiddle yard (MOLE), improved modeling skills, the chance to try out some new construction techniques, increase the layout height, add a helper district, more closely define the operating principals of the UCW, add new lighting and the opportunity to include some of my good friends and operators in the remodeling process were all the factors that were considered. I am fortunate to have some very talented individuals associated with the UCW. Kelly Newton, Jim French, Dave Schen, Jon Robinson, Bob Gilmore, Rob Spangler, Gary Waite and Rod Loder have all donated their time and talents to the project. Thanks also goes out to the rest of the UCW operating crew who have contributed and faithfully support the operation once a month. Kelly for his superb efforts in taking a few hundred pounds of plaster and several yards of cheesecloth and carving away everything that did not resemble rocks. He is also instrumental in providing input into the operational philosophy of the UCW. Rob as spent many hours painting the beautiful backdrops (See Keller Video #27 about the UTAH COLORADO WESTERN) that grace the layout. He and Kelly worked hand in hand while combing the 3-D and 2-D scenery elements. Dave and Bob have applied their talents to planting trees, building crib work, pouring rivers and adding hundreds of detail parts to enhance the scenery. Jim has applied his talents in building some of the kit and scratch built structures and signals, helping with track design and providing input into the operational philosophy behind the UCW. He also spent many hours authoring the UCW Timetable and Operating Rules handbook. Jon spent hundreds of hours designing, programming and building the first CTC computer interface. He spent untold hours and wore out the knees in more than one pair of pants, crawling around under the layout hooking everything up. Although his efforts provided the UCW with a reliable interface for a number of years we decided to install a system I could maintain and program and converted to Bruce Chubb's C/MRI system in 2000. Rod has been the inspiration behind the CTC machine's that have been and are in use on the UCW. He is also responsible for suggesting the current lighting source used on the layout.

Barlow Canyon Mines - Eureka, Utah
Definitely a worth while spur off of Barlow Canyon, this road leads to one of the best mines in the area. The road up it really nice, although only half a mile long. Once you are at the top of the trail, there is a mine back to the left in the rock. You can see where the old entrance used to be, an open gated entrance, and a grate over another shaft. If you venture the other direction from the road, you will see some tailings from that mine. Utah's New Live Steam Railroad at Shay Park
Check out Utah's newest live steam 7 1/2" gauge railroad in Saratoga Springs. The Utah Live Steamers are laying track on the last loop of their railroad in Shay Park, a railroad themed park built on the old grade of the Salt Lake and Western railroad. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The work on the two loops of track are nearing compilation with a "Golden Spike" being driven sometime in the spring of 2018. Track work is all 2X4 standing on their sides with rails screwed in place over plastic tie plates. The track work is some of the best we have ever seen! As of today the second loop, the Timpanogos loop has 700' is in place and only 430' to go. The other loop, the Brighton Loop, is finished. There is also a depot and platform to to build! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The railroad will be featured at the 2019 NMRA national convention held in Salt Lake City in the fall of that year. The National Train Show® was established in 1988 by the National Model Railroad Association as a nationally sponsored combined industry trade show and public train show to promote the hobby of model railroading. The 2019 National Train Show is held in conjunction with the national convention of the NMRA in Salt Lake City, UT. It will be held in the Southtowne Expo Center in Sandy, UT. http://www.nmra2019slc.org/train-show/ https://www.facebook.com/cmry260/
