A Career in Gold Mining (JTJS52010)
It's an exciting prospect to go underground, extract rock and process it until you are left with a solid bar of gold but that's exactly what Caleb Lese from Dunedin will find out all about when he heads to Macraes mine in Otago. Heading underground he learns that the 12 hour shifts begin and end with a blast and that the multi-million dollar subterranean digging machines are one of the main tools used by the mine. While these 'bogger' machines can be used by an operator, they can also be operated remotely when the area being worked on is unsupported. Caleb is keen to see if operating a bogger remotely is as easy as it looks but soon learns it might take a little more training to become proficient! At the processing plant, Caleb finds out more about how the gold is extracted from the sulphur rock and how from the plant processing control room around 95 per cent of the plant can be managed. Then it's off to see if there is any gold at the end of the rainbow and to his surprise, the $800,000 bar of gold he holds is much heavier than he expected! There are a wide range of roles within the gold mining industry and much of the training can be done on the job. For Caleb, it is certainly something to think about for his future. Find out more about this, and a huge variety of other careers, at http://www.justthejob.co.nz

In this video I have just finished my first day at my new job and I share with you some information and advice on how you can easily and quickly find a (backpacker) job in Perth and elsewhere when travelling in Australia. I also share some information about a budget-friendly hostel here that could be a starting-point for you to network when you arrive in Perth. It has free wifi, computers, and telephone use to call employers. Using resources such as job agencies is a good way to get started and earn money while you are looking for more permanent or long-term employment. I used an agency called Job Shop and was offered to start a job with a company the next day. Watch the video to find out how to get started. Thanks for watching! 7 Facts about Western Australia
In this video you can find seven little known facts about Western Australia. Keep watching and subscribe, as more Australian states will follow! You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. If WA were to be a country in its own right, it would be in the world’s top 10 for size. Western Australia is Australia's largest state, with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world, surpassed only by Russia's Sakha Republic. The state has about 2.6 million inhabitants – around 11% of the national total – of whom the vast majority (92%) live in the south-west corner, 73% of the population living in the Perth area, leaving the remainder of the state sparsely populated. 2. In 1933, Western Australians voted overwhelmingly to secede from the Commonwealth. While 68 percent of people voted for secession, the Commonwealth refused the request and WA remained part of Australia. 3. Perth (WA’s capital) is the most isolated city in the world, with its closest city being Adelaide and that’s over 2,200 km away. Perth is closer to Singapore and Jakarta than it is to Canberra. 4. Madness, mutiny and murder. It might sound like the plot of an implausible Hollywood blockbuster, but the story of the Batavia is frighteningly real. In 1629, the ship struck a reef 40 kilometres off the coast of WA – and that’s where the terrible tale began. 5. Perth’s very own Kings Park is the largest city park in the world. Yes, at 400ha (988 acres) it is larger than Central Park in New York . Here you can wander and take in spectacular views of the Swan River, overlooking Elizabeth Quay, the city skyline and Darling Ranges. There are bush trails, manicured gardens and Australia’s largest display of wildflowers throughout the Botanic Gardens. 6. The Pinnacles is two hours north of Perth in the Nambung National Park. There you will see the ancient desert sculptures, where the desert landscape is transformed with yellow limestone formations up to 5 metres tall rising out of the sand dunes. 7. Western Australia has its fair share of natural resources and a booming mining industry. Located in the remote Kimberley region is Argyle Diamond Mine, the largest diamond producer in the world (by volume) and the only known significant source of pink and red diamonds. The Kimberley coast is also home to Australia’s largest producer of pearls. Two of the world’s largest producers of gold are located in Western Australia. The largest open cut mine until 2016 is the Super Pit at Kalgoorlie gold mine. The oblong pit is 3.5km long and 1.5km wide but a massive 570 metres deep making it visible from space. No wonder Perth is home to the highest per capita of self made millionaires. Australian nightlife, Documentary, Amazing Documentary
Those wild nights that ended in a toilet cubicle, the first strip club you entered, the five teapots of cocktails consumed at World Bar, the meat pie from a convenience store as you waited for hours for the first morning train. Savour them in your memory, it's time to say good bye to the king of debauchery, Kings Cross. You can only hold on to your 20s for so long, but fear not, grown Sydneysider, if history has taught us anything, the Cross will live again. Somehow, one day. There has been talk in recent years about the impending final farewell as the red lights turned off, the nightclub lights turned on and more recently, the streets became still and quiet after midnight. But we didn't want to believe it, Kings Cross, we shook our heads and took another shot. At the beginning of 2014, the New South Wales government enforced strict laws on late-night establishments in certain areas of Sydney, including 1.30 a.m. lockouts and 3 a.m. last drinks. Many business owners in the red light and party district claimed it was the nail in the coffin. As revellers found another place to party, many iconic establishments throughout The Cross closed their doors and the properties housing institutions Candy's Apartment and World Bar went up for sale. #australian #nightlife

I Love Farm Jobs (farms work in Australia)
If you wanna try the farm life, you'd better check this video out before! Hopefully it will give you an idea of what picking veggies and fruits means to obtain a Visa means. From start of the day, hostel life, travel by car, picking in the field, working conditions... You name it. Working for 3 months in a farm (as well as in a fishing boat or in the Outback mines) is the only way to obtain a Second Working Holiday Visa in Australia (not to be confused with a regular working Visa). Choose wisely where to spend this period, because some area are incredible isolated. Normally the ease of the jobs and the wages are directly proportional to the distance from any crowd area or attraction. This means "the more you're isolated" than "the more you get paid". Of course this is not always true, so always check the average feedback about a place before going to spend three months of your life in the middle of nothing! Said that, good luck buddy! Hello to every fruit picker in Mildura, Victoria (where this video was produced). PS: Following I posted all the places where I work with a personal review. Hope you find this helpful. MILDURA ** out of ***** (closest farm area to Melbourne, be careful to scams) CHILDERS **** out of ***** (small Queensland's town with probably around 30 houses, but more than 6 pubs) BUNDABERG *** out of ***** (if you like Rhum, you'll love this country town) CARNARVON ** OUT OF ***** (literally in the middle of nothing but outback sand) DENMARK **** out of ***** (a hippy place for hippies persons... LOVE IT... Easy surf for ideal for beginners) MARGARET RIVER ******************* out of ***** (if I had the chance I'll move there: picking grapes for 30$/hour for 5 hours a day and surfing the rest of the time... You need a Car in order to enjoy this little coast town, otherwise forget the surf :)

South Australia: From Oceans to Outback
http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/ExploreAustralia From the rugged Outback to the glittering Southern Ocean, South Australia is known for its wildlife, food, wine and beauty. South Australia is vast, spanning nearly half a million square miles. With a population of around one point six million people, that’s just four people per square mile. Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest, and home to a remarkable range of wildlife. With over 800 native species of plants and rare sights like the endangered glossy black cockatoo, Kangaroo Island is typified by unspoiled wilderness and a magnificent selection of flora and fauna, including the kangaroos that give it its name. Just over a thousand sea lions live and breed in the Seal Bay Conservation Park, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Kangaroo Island. Marine life thrives all across the shores of South Australia. The state’s coastline stretches for more than 3,000 miles, and after a flight of just 40 minutes from Adelaide the mighty Eyre Peninsula awaits. Baird Bay is a small fishing village situated on the west of the peninsula. Snorkelling here isn’t a typical experience, as the the coastal waters are home to Australian sea lions and pods of dolphins. Adelaide, the state capital city, was founded in 1836 as a planned, freely settled colony. It was a place where immigrants could settle free from religious persecution. Nowadays the city remains a vibrant, bustling cultural centre, home to thriving markets, a lively night scene and dozens of festivals a year. From Adelaide’s beautiful architecture to a wealth of museums detailing its immigrant settlers, Adelaide does not shy away from its multicultural history. For example, the South Australian Museum houses the largest collection of Aboriginal ethnographic material in the world. Climbing away from the coast and the bustle of the city are the quiet, rural hills of the Barossa Valley. The Barossa is world-renowned for its red wine, and over 150 wineries lie within an hour’s drive from Adelaide. But the Barossa is not only home to wine. It’s one of the world’s top culinary destinations. The vibrancy of South Australia doesn’t end in Barossa. Follow the Stuart Highway north, beyond the hills and the vineyards of the Clare Valley to where green turns to red and the Outback begins. For many the jewel in the crown of this region is the dramatic stretch of rock known fondly as the ‘Organ Pipes’. Gawler Range. Enormous, solid volcanic rhyolite is stacked in the cliff face here, ranging in size from stony grinning teeth to the elongated pillars that remind so many people of magnificent organs. The rugged landscape of the Flinders Ranges epitomises the romanticism of outback Australia: big skies, incredible sunsets, and sun-baked desert as far as the eye can see. In the summer it’s a hot, dry landscape. It might seem daunting at first, but look a bit closer and you’ll find the place teeming with life. The Flinders Ranges have also been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. Aborigines have walked in these hills since long before European settlers arrived, using the plants and the rocks for food and creating art. The Flinders Ranges are now home to numerous towns and villages scattered along the highway. The area is accessible as a destination for hiking, cycling, camping and wildlife watching, giving visitors a taste of the iconic outback. Rawnsley Park Station is a working farm that has managed to find a way to blend sheep farming and tourism. The owners provide scenic flights over the spectacular geological formation, Wilpena Pound. Wilpena Pound is an ancient valley floor amidst mountains that have been eroded over hundreds of millions of years. Its golden walls are formed of highly resistant quartzite and sandstone. The area is protected from mining and most human impact other than tourism. Nowadays, 4x4s can be seen roaming along the ridgetops that command spectacular views of the timeless landscape. Life can nevertheless be found all over the northern reaches of South Australia. The emu is a large, flightless bird, endemic to Australia and a close relation of the ostrich. Its long legs allow it to reach speeds of up to 30 miles an hour. It has become an iconic image of Australia. Continuing up the spine of the country, we reach the northern regions of South Australia. This is opal mining country, and the Painted Desert may seem barren, but can be extremely lucrative for those willing to work. The town of Coober Pedy is the opal mining capital of the world, known for the way its people live underground in dugouts to escape the fierce desert heat. We’ve travelled from the crystal waters of the Southern Ocean to the dry beauty of the outback, covering one of the most magnificent states in Australia. The Explorers’ Way crosses the state border, slicing the country in half as it continues into the Northern Territory.

Australia Advertises the 'Best Job Ever'
Depressed about the global economy, unemployed, or just looking for adventure? Then look no further because a tiny Australian island is offering a dream job, advertising globally to find the right person. Australian tourism officials are looking for a caretaker for the islands of the Great Barrier Reef. [Anthony Hayes, CEO Queensland Tourism]: "This really is the best job in the world. It is a six month contract when you live in this beautiful luxury house, it is probably four or five million dollar house, right on the edge of Hamilton island looking out of the Pacific. We'll pay you 150,000 Australian dollars which is roughly 75,000 Euros for the six month contract and your job in a nutshell is to travel through out the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, experiencing everything that the islands have to offer." The caretaker will spend six months visiting Hamilton Island promoting tourism through a video blog. Duties include feeding ocean fish, cleaning a pool and collecting deliveries of mail that arrive by plane. But the employee is also required to go scuba diving, snorkeling and hiking and to enjoy at least 25 nearby island resorts. No skills or experience are required for the job that starts in July and there is no age requirement. Queensland created the job as an antidote to the global economic slump and is advertising in 18 countries including the United States and China. [Anthony Hayes, CEO Queensland Tourism]: "I suspect the biggest catch is going to be trying to get rid of them after six months. I suspect somebody will want to stay forever. It is obviously a bit of fun but there is a serious side to it. I think we in the tourism industry are in for a fairly difficult twelve months ahead not just in Australia but worldwide the tourism industry is in for a difficult time. Our role is to try help our industry overcome the difficulties of the next 12 months, protect jobs." Applicants must submit a one-minute video expressing interest in the Great Barrier Reef, a vast coral reef system that is classed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The campaign has already drawn more than 200 visitors to its website. Applications are open until the end of February. How asteroid mining can allow us to travel to space | Nina Hooper | TEDxHarvardCollege
Imagine a world with ubiquitous, affordable space travel, where getting in a spaceship is no stranger than getting in an airplane. Harvard undergraduate Nina Hooper, an astrophysics student, shows how mining asteroids for platinum could be the way to make space travel cheap and accessible to civilians. Nina Hooper is a Harvard College student from Melbourne, Australia studying astrophysics. She loves traveling and adventure and is working towards what she believes is the ultimate adventure - going to space. She is also a private pilot, a songwriter and a major foodie. Nina intends to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace and astrospace engineering either in the US or UK. INDIAN PACIFIC TRAIN Review – Luxury Train Travel with Great Southern Rail, Australia
Full article: http://sassyzengirl.com/indian-pacific-train-review/ The iconic transcontinental journey aboard one of Australia's most iconic luxury trains: Great Southern Railway's Indian Pacific Train. Soundtrack: "Eagle Rock" by Wes Hutchison The journey starts in Perth and first passes through the lovely Avon Valley before reaching more remote regions. The first day ends with a visit to the old gold mining town of Kalgoorlie, including a city tour and a bird's eye view of the saw called "Super Pit", a 3.6km wide open cut gold mine that operates 24/7. Overnight the Indian Pacific luxury train travels into the Nullarbor Plain, named after the Latin "null'arbor" = no tree. Midday reaches the small dwelling of Cook, once a thriving town of 200 literally in the middle of nowhere, but now reduced to a refueling stop for the Indian Pacific train and a population of 5. The vastness of the Australian continent becomes apparent on this day especially. Overnight the luxury train journey reaches Adelaide and the next morning begins with a city tour and excursion to Mount Lofty with spectacular views. From their Great Southern Rail continues through the Barossa Valley, a famous wine region and on to Broken Hil for the final excursion on this trip. The next morning, the Indian Pacific luxury train passes through the mythical Blue Mountains and finally reaches Sydney at midday. Luxury Train travels are a wonderful way to see beautiful scenery while enjoying style and pampering. The Indian Pacific and Ghan train offer that kind of exquisite experience in both their Gold and Platinum classes. Each cabin is fitted with private bathrooms and all meals and drinks are included as well as all off-train excursions. How is coal mined? - What is Surface Mining and Underground Mining - Video
How is coal mined? Read Full Story: http://www.spoonfeeding.in/2013/02/how-is-coal-mined-what-is-surface.html Mining is the process of removing coal from the ground. There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

Ecosystem restoration/reforestation of open mine dumps and landfills with Groasis
Engels Find more info at www.groasis.com. In 2012 Groasis implemented an ecosystem restoration project of an open mine dump. It is an open mine landfill of a slate mine in Abejera de Tábara, near Zamora, Spain. The trees are planted with the biodegradable bio-plastic Waterboxx® plant cocoon. The waste of the mine is poured on a huge mountain. A layer of 1 meter of soil mixed with stones is applied to this. The trees were planted with the biodegradable Waterboxx® plant cocoon in 2012. Unlike the 10-time reusable green-white Waterboxx®, the biodegradable Waterboxx® has a camouflage sandy colour. The trees have had water once during planting. The Waterboxxes work great. They have been catching morning dew and rain already for 5 consecutive years. The water is stored in the Waterboxx®, in such a way that it cannot evaporate, and is slowly released to the tree. Over 60% of the trees grow amazing. In this way, we can restore all open mine landfills, very cheaply, in their original natural state. Tour of Soudan Mine
Soudan mine is known as Minnesota's oldest, deepest, and richest iron ore mine. It was closed in 1962 but is now open as a state park. Visitors can today travel 2,341 feet below the surface on an 80-year old electric hoist through shaft #8. The ride is fairly scary. Underneath visitors ride 1/2 mile to view some mining chambers. Aunt Annie told Sammy that we were going to see the Joker in the BatCave (currently, Batman and Superman are all that matters to Sammy). When we went to get into the rickety 80-year old electric hoist, Sammy was afraid to go, until our tour guide told him that she had already taken care of the Joker. We'll post some video at a later time. Oh, and there were bats down there too!
