Bluegirls come in every size Some are wise and some otherwise, They got pretty blue eyes. For an hour a man may change For an hour her face looks strange - Looks strange, looks strange. Marching to the promised land Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand, Pulls you down on your knees, While you're down a pool appears. The face in the water looks up, And she shakes her head as if to say That it's the last time you'll look like today. Sail away, away Ripples never come back. Gone to the other side. Sail away, away. The face that launched a thousand ships Is sinking fast, that happens you know, The water gets below. Seems not very long ago Lovelier she was than any that I know. Angels never know it's time To close the book and gracefully decline, The song has found a tale. My, what a jealous pool is she. The face in the water looks up She shakes her head as if to say That the bluegirls have all gone away. Sail away, away Ripples never come back. They've gone to the other side. Look into the pool, Ripples never come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone Oh, they've gone to the other side... Sail away, away Ripples never come back. They've Gone to the other side. Look into the pool, The ripples never come back, come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone They've gone to the other side Ripples never come back Sail away, away

Gone to the other side. Look into the pool, The ripples never come back, come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone Theyve gone to the other side Ripples never come back Sail away, away... "Ripples" was released in the winter of 1976 on Genesis's seventh studio album, the first to feature drummer Phil Collins as lead vocalist, following Peter Gabriel's departure. Genesis is one of my last great favorite acts which I'd not yet created a video for, though I've had several in various stages of production since I first began making videos. It's been so long since I'd been wanting to finish one and upload it, but until recently certain policies would have served to make the effort for naught. So glad to finally get one out! From Wiki: After Peter Gabriel left Genesis, the remaining members held auditions for a permanent lead singer. Initially, Phil Collins did not wish to take over for Gabriel, opting instead to teach the potential lead singers the songs. One of the 400 auditioners, Mick Stickland, came close to being chosen, but the band and Mick decided in the end against working together. According to the band members, the backing tracks for A Trick of the Tail had already been recorded and were in a key in which Mick was not comfortable singing. When the auditions failed to produce a suitable vocalist, Collins reluctantly went in the studio to sing "Squonk" and the band decided that Collins should be the new vocalist. The album was recorded at Relight Studios and mixed at Trident Studios in October/November 1975. It also marked the first album that the band would co-produce with David Hentschel. They would work with Hentschel for the next four years. The first Genesis record I'd ever purchased was Trespass, maybe only a couple of years before, and I'd enjoyed the music but not to the extent that I dug into the band's other releases. Then I picked up A Trick Of The Trail LP the day it was released, based partly on the allure of the album art....can't think of how many great bands I was introduced to simply because I found the art intriguing! Long story short....this record had a tremendous impact on me, as did the two subsequent studio albums. Back in the day when these 3 records were current, it was nearly unheard of to state a preference for the post-Gabriel Genesis...in some circles it may still be?! ;-) However, there now seems to be greater acceptance for favoring this period, and I'm proud to say that I've always been among those rabid fans of this mid-period, post-Gabriel Genesis! I believe they produced some of the most beautiful progressive music ever during this period. A Trick of the Tail reached No.3 in the UK, remaining on the charts for 39 weeks, and No.31 in the US. Additionally, the album was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA in March 1990. Also according to Tony Banks in the essay that comes with Platinum Collection, the album doubled the band's previous albums sales. This success was also financially crucial for Genesis who were $400,000 in debt by the time Peter Gabriel left. This video was one of the last of the Genesis vids I'd started working on, but after manipulating some existing water effects and creating others entirely from scratch, it really opened up and I was able to finish it pretty quickly. This is another of those videos where I've used the album art extensively, in this case mostly the various characters referenced from the songs that are depicted in the album art. Maybe too much, but I told ya...I LOVE this art! ;-) Hope you enjoy the effort!

Genesis - Ripples - Sheet Music + PDF

03:09
A sheet music transcription of the middle and end sections of Ripples by Genesis from Trick of the Tail. PDF at http://tinyurl.com/zahupx3 I've had a couple of requests for Ripples, particularly the middle section, so… :) It's based on the studio version although I've also referenced a few bits from the live versions that I have. The speed I play it is the same as this video: marginally slower than the original but nowhere near as slow as the live versions from around 1980 which, to me at least, seem positively glacial! :) I've included the synth line even though when I play Ripples as a solo piano piece, I just play the piano part. When Genesis did it live Tony would play the bass octaves until the synth came in at bar 20 and then he would play the synth line with his left hand while continuing the right hand arpeggios. He'd then switch back to both hands on the piano for bars 38 onward. Bars 26 & 30: this is how the studio version goes. Live, Tony would start the arpeggio on a G# (like bar 24) instead of the B as shown here. Choose your own method :) Bar 37: Although this bar is played much simpler by Tony live, I'm pretty sure that this is what's played on the studio version and it leads nicely to… Bars 38-45: on the studio version, I believe (though I'm not positive) that the RH arps are played as written but are doubled up an octave lower as well. The LH chords are played as written. Live however, the RH arps are definitely played at the higher octave (as written) and the LH chords are played an octave higher (bracketed notes). Obviously the synth line isn't played live and the same goes for bars 46-52. The other thing is that, live, in the Bm9 bars, the first note of each group of four in the right hand is a C# rather than a B. In this video I've used the lower octave chords plus doubled up RH arps (studio) on the first pass and the upper octave chords along with the aforementioned RH C# notes (live) on the second pass just to better illustrate the difference. As a solo piano piece, choose whatever sounds best to you; you could even use the lower chords and play the RH arps an octave lower… Bars 53-end: these are template chords only; how you play those repeat choruses is entirely up to you! I can't actually think of another Genesis song that has a chorus fade out with piano chords like this that lends itself so readily to being mucked around with! :) Live and in the studio, on each repeat, Tony varies which octave the fourth chord of each group is played; usually as written, sometimes an octave higher than the third chord (like bar 60). He also adds some rhythmical variation occasionally (like in bars 59 and 60). When I play it, I do all of the above and I add some left hand rhythmical counter-pointing too. Treat yourself and go wild! It's VERY rare that Tony's parts allow such improvisatory excess!! :) It's scored using Sibelius 7.5

Before Genesis decided that Phil Collins should be their lead singer, they were audtioning hundreds of people for the job. While doing this, Genesis recorded their album "A Trick Of The Tail" without vocals as they also contemplated traveling on as an instrumental act. These demo recordings hold minor differences and are lower quality instrumental versions of the songs which were done at Trident Studios between October - November 1975.

Ripples By Genesis Guitar Lesson Tutorial

17:33
Second song from the 1976 Genesis album Trick Of The Tail. Which sadly was the last album to feature the guitar playing of Steve Hackett. The song was written by Mike Rutherford and features some rather complex guitar arrangements with the aide of Steve Hackett. In this lesson i have taken elements of both guitars and combined them to create a version that can be played on a solo guitar. The chord charts are available for download by clicking on the link below I have also used a capo on the 2nd fret. I was watching a video of Genesis playing live and a saw that Rutherford was playing the song with a capo. This made the chords easier to play. Hope you have fun learning this song, don't forget to check out my other lessons by Genesis. Ripples - Düsseldorf/Germany - 2007 Tour - Germany - Lyrics

08:02
Genesis Live at LTU Arena Düsseldorf 2007 Turn it on Again Tour with Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Chester Thompson, Daryl Stuermer. Lyrics: Bluegirls come in every size Some are wise and some otherwise, They got pretty blue eyes. For an hour a man may change For an hour her face looks strange - Looks strange, looks strange. Marching to the promised land Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand, Pulls you down on your knees, While youre down a pool appears. The face in the water looks up, And she shakes her head as if to say That its the last time youll look like today. Sail away, away Ripples never come back. Gone to the other side. Sail away, away. The face that launched a thousand ships Is sinking fast, that happens you know, The water gets below. Seems not very long ago Lovelier she was than any that I know. Angels never know its time To close the book and gracefully decline, The song has found a tale. My, what a jealous pool is she. The face in the water looks up She shakes her head as if to say That the bluegirls have all gone away. Sail away, away Ripples never come back. Theyve gone to the other side. Look into the pool, Ripples never come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone Oh, theyve gone to the other side... Sail away, away Ripples never come back. Gone to the other side. Look into the pool, The ripples never come back, come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone Theyve gone to the other side Ripples never come back Sail away, away...

These demo recordings hold minor differences and are lower quality instrumental versions of the songs which were done at Trident Studios between October - November 1975.

Genesis / Ripples by Alex Staal

Hi everyone, This video is not to be taken seriously. I only made it because I didn't have anything better to do at the time. Basically I am a pianist and just like to try playing other instruments, usually not very successfully. I own an audio- recording-studio, therefore you may consider the quality of the sound better than the movie, wich is probably the sad truth. Please feel free to comment on this video-clip. Or better, if either one or more of the original Genesis members have watched this, I'd be dying to hear they feel about this. Maybe, if I would be that lucky, mr. Tony Banks could even tell me if I got the piano-part right... Thank you for watching. Best regards, Alex Staal ([email protected]), The Netherlands.
