Installing & Testing AMDGPU-Pro Drivers | Rx 460 on Ubuntu 16.04

169 ratings | 24775 views
Installing and testing out the AMDGPU-Pro drivers for my new ASUS ROG Strix RX460. Things started out pretty bad when Mesa & the normal AMDGPU driver was unable to identify the new GPU. It almost seemed like the GPU was DOA. One thing I don't understand is why the AMDGPU-Pro drivers requires uses to go to the AMD website, download it, and install it by hand. Why on earth isn't it at least an deb file? It really should be in the semi-official graphics drivers PPA. For example, I couldn't ask a non-technical user to install these drivers. Amazingly enough, the GPU pulled through and I was able to get the display drivers installed. I did notice that the Catalyst/Crimson control center was missing. Hopefully AMD will fork the Windows version and make some sort of GUI tool available for Linux. I tested a few games. Rust & Ballistic Overkill are native Linux games, Skyrim is a Windows game via Wine, and Paladins is a Windows game via VMware. Overall I am somewhat disappointed with the performance: Rust showed a fair amount of stuttering that you can see in the video. Stuttering like that will get you killed in a fire fight. Performance on Skyrim was quite low. Watching back the video, I'd say I averaged about 20 frames per second, which is totally unacceptable. Paladins was surprisingly OK despite the graphical glitches, however I would have liked to see better performance. ⬇︎Social Links ⬇︎ ✔︎ Discord: https://discord.gg/tVyBHAU ✔︎ Website: http://www.egee.io ✔︎ Twitter: https://twitter.com/egee_irl ✔︎ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/egee_irl/ ---- ⬇︎ System Specs ⬇︎ ✔︎ OS: Ubuntu 16.04: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop ✔︎ Motherboard:MSI A88XM Gaming: http://amzn.to/29OQeP6 ✔︎ CPU: A10-7850k: http://amzn.to/29rmTtB ✔︎ GPU: R7 360: http://amzn.to/29tLj4A ✔︎ RAM: Kingston HyperX 8gb: http://amzn.to/29SiRHP ✔︎ SSD: Samsung 850 EVO: http://amzn.to/29BABbA ✔︎ HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm: http://amzn.to/29SjfpI ✔︎ Input: Steam Controller: http://amzn.to/29ufZmo ✔︎ Capture Device: Elgato Game Capture HD60: http://amzn.to/2aiPxup

I got an AMD FirePro W5170M in a Dell Precision 7510 ( bought in December 2016 ), and last driver for Linux is from Januay 2015. Now I cannot upgrade my OS version. Total joke by Dell and AMD. Looks like support is done according to the revenue stream. I will not buy Dell or AMD anymore

Are there no linux drivers for Rx 580s?

Default Radeon WattMan settings have been restored due to unexpected system failure i have this problem!

Great video, dude! If you try using the latest kernel w/ the mesa drivers, probably you can get a better performance, considering that the AMD's cards are getting more support on it.

Egee+ Can you access relive in Linux while gaming ?
Austin Lunbeck (1 year ago)
One people are saying you are using work station drivers instead of the gaming drivers two your CPU is relatively weak that's one of the large benefits of windows gpus and cpus have a closer to the bones support so they work better with Linux you kind of have to brute force it sadly

I don't know how you even got Skyrim installed, unless you had done it ages ago. When I tried recently, I'm stuck in a forever loop where I cannot install the old version of Steam that Wine provides me.
Egee (1 year ago)
Skyrim is very temperamental and breaks constantly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it wont. It doesn't work for me right now.

I am trying to install amdgpu-pro on Ubuntu 17.04 for RX 550. No luck. I lose all visibility after reboot. Any ideas where I might find some updated info?

that driver is a nightmare... there is now way for me to make it work

Well on that CPU you wont get a very high framerate least with CPU intensive games, on my rig with a slightly better GPU I get a much higher framerate on skyrim with play on linux. But I would say that comes down to the fact that i have a better CPU.

W/ nvidia or amd card?

nice video tbh

I just installed GPU PRO with an R9 380X, Linux mint 18. Bio shock Infinite runs well at 1080 ultra. FPS is 70 tp 110 most of the time but I get sharp drops at times that only last a few seconds.

Do u try it on elementary os by change?
Richard (1 month ago)
lol elementary wouldn't chance anything, it uses the same kernel as Ubuntu LTS. the only difference between Ubuntu and the distributions based on Ubuntu is the software preinstalled. besides that they use the same repositories and kernel from what ever version of Ubuntu they are based upon.

Why do you use AMDGPU-PRO instead of just MESA 17 RadeonSI for gaming? https://launchpad.net/~paulo-miguel-dias/+archive/ubuntu/mesa AMD developers themselves even recommend AMDGPU-PRO only for workstations...

Here is a new video ideea https://github.com/marazmista/radeon-profile .

Back when I had Windows installed, I'd be able to run Skyrim at 60fps highest settings with my 460. I use an Athlon 860k and 12gb ram paired with this.

Cool video but last I heard amd wasn't doing anything else with drivers f they made for Linux. that's why I'm still running mint 17.3 with old catalyst drivers. really hate the idea of having to get another video card just so I can have good gaming with Linux.
Benjus Maximus (1 year ago)
You also have to take account for kernel you are using. Ubuntu 16.04 is running 4.2, RX 480 support was added on 4.8. So you might want to upgrade your kernel or download 16.10 which already have 4.8 pre-installed.

Dinoraptor101 It's in Mesa so it should be installed by dwfault

Can you please help me find the non-pro driver? the AMDGPU-PRO has serious issues with bare bones DEBIAN
Travis Juntara (1 year ago)
This checks out: looks like kernel support for the Polaris series (Rx 4x0) was introduced in Kernel 4.7 or 4.8 But I guess the quandary now is that AMDGPU-Pro is only supported on 16.04 (4.4?). I would go with the non-pro driver on the new kernel, since I've seen benchmarks that show it to be generally more performant and more fast-evolving.
kudzayi chimbodza (1 year ago)
Yep , I second you Benjus, kernel upgrade is required as these were new cards to the market.

Will you test just AMDGPU too? by that I mean radeonSI (userland opensource driver)
Tux29 (1 year ago)
As it could lead to a RX 470/480?
Erik Bročko (1 year ago)
Can you, please, check CS:GO for me? When I had a RX 480, the game was running at unacceptable framerates, sometimes even dropping below 60 FPS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6NbdltGz90 (exactly like that). So I returned it, because GTX 750 Ti managed better :D. I'm thinking about getting a RX 460 or 470 tho. Sooo, would you be so kind and test CS:GO, please? ^_^
Milky (1 year ago)
why are you playing as argonian mage.
Egee (1 year ago)
There actually IS a reason but its a long one and I'll probably make a video about it at some point. The short of it is, it's a reference to an old old character I made a long time ago.
cody thedragonrude (1 year ago)
but it still is lame that only select gpus work with this driver

nice choice! congratulatons :)
Osirez Tech (1 year ago)
AMD seems to be really pulling it together. At this rate my next GPU might be a Radeon.
