1 to 3 PCI-E Riser Extender: How to get 7 GPUs working on a 6 GPU Motherboard

248 ratings | 40100 views
I tried out some 1 to 3 PCI-E Riser Extenders with my motherboards. On both Asrock PRO BTC H81 and Anniversary B85 I was able to get an extra GPU working in windows, for a total of 7 GPU's on each board. 7 GPUs seems to be the maximum windows will naturally allow. want a 1-3 PCI-E Riser Extender? You can get them at https://www.cryptomined.com Get your Ledger Wallet Nano S or Blue here: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/r/c73c The best way to support the channel is to use the store: https://cryptomined.com I hope you liked this video and found it helpful, if you would like to leave me a tip please send any amount of coins to any of the following addresses: Bitcoin 12hKQ99t9eiLV2D2C6K9bdYntdEVk46o3h Litecoin LTkDdmm9qXHNXpnc1FbnyhWFjqdNR4t4Xt Dogecoin DHGaiFJU442oKVnjnexkvRDwuX7pysXPF2 Dash XtnRsdAHdAAGD4EshCDFpvwJqTWZvE2A2u ZCash t1goK66cPpVbiUsoi3httTTtmKz4d1kie4k Ethereum 0x317732FA9E934018D2D0Dd7b5C8f8f320D6059D2

Just bought one from your store to support you and noticed that you weren't listed here anywhere here: https://www.coinpayments.net/store-directory. You should reach out to those guys and get your store added to the list so more people can find you

I just bought one and I’m gonna Test it with vega64. They are the most pain in the add gpu to get working in multiples so this should be fun

I saw an pci x 16 to 8 USB . It was like 100 buck tho
Aerohk (7 months ago)
Mine won't boot into windows when this thing is inserted. Back to 2 GPU I guess.
Anthony Lipari (6 months ago)
In any of the slots? What if you disable onboard gpu ?
Cryptomined (7 months ago)
yea it really depends on the motherboard, some will take them, some wont.

I have 1 AMD Radeon HD 5450 already installed.... I want another GPU to be installed but I have 1 PCI-e 3.0 blue... I want to run simultaneously in 1 pc with 1 PCI express slot... Will the PCI riser will help me?

it may, depends if your board will accept it

this will work on Gigabyte GA-B150M-DS3H ? im got 3 PCI-E and wana put 6 video

with this we can use any kind of mobo and get multi gpus?
Kemal Sözen (9 months ago)
theres a mole power on the card and u didnt use it.does it necessery?

you only need to use 1 of the 2, sata or molex. you do not need to use both.
Akmal Vlog (10 months ago)
why can't detect vga nvidia?
Cryptomined (9 months ago)
it really depends on your motherboard and pcie slots

Imagine putting 18 of those on a BTC mobo💲💲💲💲💲
DS Januarsa (11 months ago)
Will this create a bottleneck? im planning to use this thing on my boards which have only 3xPCIE slots so it would use 9 GPU.. will this setup works?
Cryptomined (10 months ago)
as long as your motherboard recognizes it and uses it properly, yeah. check the recent z270 video i uploaded about getting 12 gpus to work with it
DS Januarsa (10 months ago)
Cryptomined thanks for the info. So the OS will recognized it as 3 GPU instead of 1 GPU right?
Cryptomined (10 months ago)
it wont create a bottle neck, however it may or may not work with your board or pcie slots, just something you need to gamble on... generally 16x slots accept them better than 1x slots
Josh Nance (11 months ago)
Thanks for the video. I wanted to go from 6 to 8. Bought a msi z270 sli plus(followed a BBT video to the "T") and on that particular submodel of the z270, m.2 to pcie does NOT work. Just for those curious you won't find any info online about the sli plus and whether m.2 to pcie will work. I had to order a couple to test. Ended up just buying a whole new mobo: Asrock h110 pro btc+. The only chance i had at getting the sli plus to 8 cards would've been the expansion hub but apparently that wouldn't get me there. Not to mention they do cost about half the price of an entire mobo like the asrock. Nice video though. Thanks man
epicdeuce (11 months ago)
Will this work on a MSI Z170A?I have 7 GPUs plugged in and the m.2 converter wont read. Perhaps 7 is the max allowed on this Motherboard?

a lot of people said u should only use 2 pcie instead of 3 because the sata cable should only be use for 2 card. But when i look at the board i saw a sata connector and a 4 pin connector, what would happen if i plug both sata and molex will 3 card work?
Colodez Wells (7 months ago)
No, it is optional, you choose only 1 of 3. (6pin or molex are preferable).
Naf Nation_v2 (1 year ago)
Z_TEK_LION it is not recommended but you can try....
Jeff Gass (1 year ago)
is it ok to power it over the sata? i know the risers coming off of that are powered themselves(6pin or molex?) so maybe it doesnt matter than this expander is powered by sata? either way, can you use only the molex power input over the sata, is that why there are two different power inputs?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
you can use either of the 2

Cryptomined (1 year ago)
you should be able to get 7 to work with your asrock h81 pro btc. that was what worked for me. trying 8 and the board would not post. I can not guarantee it will work with your set up, motherboard/gpu/OS, but it should, it did with mine.
Altair (1 year ago)
How is it working now? did it fry your board or sata cable? thats what i am really afraid of .
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
I don't use them full time, only tested with them. With my power supplies it is difficult to add that extra card because i do not have enough VGA ports on the 1300G2s and dont want to use the 6 pin ports for GPUs, rather use them for risers alone.

Which is the best motherboard right now for six RX480's?
Jamaludin Silalahi (10 months ago)
TB250 with the latest BIOS and proper grounding, and everthing is just almost plug and play
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
the best motherboards that you can still get are TB85 (LGA1150) or TB250 (LGA1151) if you need either I can help you get them. The old asrock boards, B85, H81 and H97 are nearly impossible to find at a reasonable price. the only reason why the biostar boards are becoming available again, is because they are remaking them
Shorya (1 year ago)
Can it work with MSI z97 military edition and windows 10 ? it has 2 x16pcie, 2 x1pcie and 2 PCI. what do you think ? i can only fit 4 card, was thinking of buying another moto with 6 pcie until i found this video.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
it worked on all of my motherboards, but would only let me use one extra card on 6 GPU rigs, and on the 7 GPU rig it windows would not enable more than 7 cards, though it would see more than 7 cards. so it 'should' work for 6 or 7 GPUs from my experience.. maybe if i had a board with less PCIE slots it would let me add more, im not sure
Shorya (1 year ago)
I guess, i'd be more than happy if i could run 6 cards on my mobo, l will give it a try before buying a new mobo. really appreciate your reply :) FYI - I have RX 480
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
it should work, might give you an extra 1 or 2 cards, but i can not guarantee that it will work for sure, it really depends if you motherboard and GPU like it. Best you can do is try, at worse it fails and you need to get a second motherboard... you Might be able to get 7 working if you use 2 of these. I would try one first, if you can get 5 or 6 working, i would try a second one to see if you can get 7 working. but again, motherboards are different and the only way to tell if it will work for sure is by trying

And to be able to put to work 7 GPU 480 8Gb, what to be able to recommend?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
It is 7 470 4g cards, and the power supply is Leadex 2000W. Others that would work would be EVGA 1600G2, or Corsair AX1200i or AX1500i. All of those have 8 VGA ports or more (Leadex has more). I don't think they sell the Leadex 2000W in north america, from what I know, only Asia and Europe... possible Australia and South America... but i have never seen one for sale on US sites.

Can u use this devide to rum 9 gpus in a single msi motherboard? the gamer 5 have 7 pcie slots. What are the limitations of this device? can use more than 1 per motherboard?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
I personally could not get more than 7 to run on this board, but others have gotten 8 to run with some sort of driver modification in ubuntu, and i hear it might be possible in windows enterprise though i have not tried with windows enterprise yet
Justin Abraham (1 year ago)
So this can turn a 3-4 card board to a 6-7 card board? I was reading about this before and some people said it works fine, others say they couldn't get it to work. If it could work without any problems, that would be great, especially when there is a shortage of 6 card boards and cheap 3-4 card boards are easy to get.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
Yes, and yes both sides might be right... these things can be stubborn.. some boards will take them, some GPUs will take them, some wont (is what Im told)... worked for me in the video on both my pro btc and my b85 anni... but what Im told is it might not work on yours (so to say)... its kinda like try and see experiment. I havent had anyone tell me personally that theirs did not work though, so im just going off of what i heard before I tried them when i say they are stubborn. I was told, its not dependent upon which board or GPU... for example, im told that some rx480's for example will like it, some wont.. even the same brand, same cards... But personally I did not run in to such problems. the only problem I ran in to was 7 seemed to be a max for those 2 6 slot boards. the MSI z97 gaming 5 however did post with more htan 7 in... wouuld recognize more than 7, ... but would only use 7 (even if 8 or 9 were plugged in)... where the pro btc and anni wouldnt even post with 8 plugged in. So its worth a shot... if you have a 3 slot board and grab 2 there is a chance you could get 6-7 working. if you do try, goodluck :)

can i 8 gpu? with the adapter riser
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
+Javi VLOGS well if you want to buy your own miner depends what country you are in, but amazon is probably good for you. I can get you other mining stuff like risers and small things for your rig at www.cryptomined.com

Cryptomined friends where can i find a low price gpu and parts miners ?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
+Javi VLOGS it was not lower for me when i used it, but i only tested it out to see if it worked, i dont actually use it full time.. I dont think there will be lower hashrate, but you would need to try and see how it works for you - some motherboards accept it, some GPUs accept it, some dont like it - is what I was told from the guy i get htem from
Javier Play (1 year ago)
Cryptomined i see another coments that the hastrate low with the adapter, is te true ?

you would have to try, i could only get 7 working myself

Your store is nice, please add more things like GPUs or mobos (thats what I need). Let me ask you some questions: How to avoid taxes buying from China? Last time I ordered something outside the european union I had to pay arround 30% vat, close to 100€.... And can you make a video of solving the error code 43 of windows? (In my 2 rigs I have one card idling for this) Thank you!
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
Thanks, but GPUs cost too much here, the z97 is the only MB i can get a decent deal on :) EMS shipping is best to try and avoid taxes, we put a low value on and as gift, but the odd time maybe customs is strict. Did not have any problems sending risers there recently, my friends did not say they had to pay any customs. Not sure about MB though, maybe they will look at that differently, sometimes customs charges different amount and have more strict rules for different items, so Im not positive of the rules in all EU countries.
Daniel Keem (1 year ago)
Sorry for all these comments lol I noticed you have powered pcie risers on your site for a good price. My local pc store sells them for $25 and every where online that I've seen that has them really cheap takes like 1 month or more to ship. I was wondering if you ship to Canada and roughly how long it would take?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
if you want quick shipping it just costs a bit more, select EMS. Will be adding ver 006 pcie usb risers with 6 pin power today also
Daniel Keem (1 year ago)
Can you possibly get more than 7? I've never seen any sort of mother board with more than 7 pcie slots so I would assume it's impossible.

Hello, this divise have a bug, ramdonly low the hashrate from 28 to 6 for eth, this happen after using it for a while
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
i wonder if its drivers or the device or the miner. I have not tested it for very long, only a short test mining run using ZCash and Monero miners. I dont use them personally because all my PSUs only have 6 VGA 8pins except for the one running on my z97gaming5 MSI which already has 7 GPUs and doesn't seem to want to use more than 7 in windows 10.
Jessica Jung (1 year ago)
I also have the MSI Z97 motherboard. I tried using that extender but it would not post with 8 GPUs. I also tried it with a M.2 to PCIe adapter. 8 RX 480s shows up in device manager, but Windows 10 will only use 7 GPUs. There's a little exclamation point on the 8th GPU in device manager. There's definitely a limitation in Win10; 7 GPUs is the max. I have 9 PCIe available in my power supply. Be great if someone could come out with a mod to remove the 7 GPU limit.
Cryptomined were you using windows 10 home or windows 10 pro? Because the limitation of 7gpus is probably on the home but could be disabled on the pro, just like on the enterprise

Great vid. Couple replies in the comments for when you have time to try other things with this splitter. FYI, I got one too, tried using it in Win 7 x64, didn't work. I read on some forum (can't remember where) that it'll work on Win 10 only. Curious to try that next, and also Ubuntu. Any thoughts?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
so I tried with 2 295x2's and pro btc for some reason wouldnt recognize them, maybe drivers.. tried on anniversary and it only saw one 295x2 (2 290s) which made 7 GPUs (5x 480 + 2 290x).. so i moved them around and not my motherboard cant find my windows uefi boot partition LOL... so i might have to reinstall windows and try again another day...
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
I tried on ubuntu with msi z97, i need to test it out more on the other boards in ubuntu, but I was trying for like 2 days to get 8 to work i need a bit of a rest from it :) have some more monero stuff to review, just got my ledger nano S in so I need to review that and do some tutorials on that, getting more pcie ver 006 risers in today or tomorrow so need to do a video on all the different USB ver 006 risers... i have a ton of stuff to do so when time permits I may fool around more with this 1-3 riser, but it will have to wait :)
Lawrence Aberle (1 year ago)
Begs the question: can you do 8 or 9 or 10 gpus? I built the 7 gpu rig that you showed on an earlier video. I am wondering if this would do an 8th, 9th or 10th gpu? I have heard that no-one has done an 8 gpu rig without considerable cost and programming.......just wondering. Might be another video demo! Thanks for all of your videos!
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
worth trying I suppose
Charif Lakchiri (1 year ago)
Another thing worth trying is throwing a dual GPU card in the mix with the 1-to-3 splitter.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
I tried on the msi z97 gaming 5, and I could only get 7 GPUs working, now it will post and boot with more than 7, with 8 or 9 (didnt try 10 or more but assume the same)... BUT.. it would not use those extra GPU's... they were only showing up as "hidden devices" in device manager. now the motherboard was actually using some of the GPUs attached through the 1-3 board and stopped using all of the GPUs that were plugged in to the motherboard (I can tell because the extras were 480s)... so from my experience I cant, as of yet, get more than 7 to work in that board, though I will be looking into if it is possible again when I have time.

Very Good!
Brad Duke (1 year ago)
thanks very much for video. do you think i could use 2 of theses on old computer that only has 2 pci e slots to get 6 gpu's working?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
I guess that it would really depend on if the motherboard will recognize and accept the 1-3 riser. probably worth a shot, but personally i could not give any guarantee as I haven't tried your board :)
Mining Hardware (1 year ago)
great video buddy , are they really working , like for mining or just get recognized ? cause for me it doesn't stick together , like there is a lot of pressure on motherboard socket.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
+Guntis Vitolins im not going to be using them for long term because most of my PSU only have 6 8-pins... i would need to get another PSU and I dont like linking 2 rigs together with one rig taking some PSU from another....... the only PSU i have with more VGA is the leadex 2000W and yeah like I said, i dont like the idea of using some of those ports for another board.. i just dont like the idea of mixing the rigs power together. I only tested them out, and for now that all I will do because of my PSU limitations
Mining Hardware (1 year ago)
Yes so many port to run all that wouldn't be a problem , I'm just curious do they really work stable . How long you are using them, would you give a good review for them, cause my supplier offered me these , but I didn't take them. What board and cards is on that riser? I should give it a go 😁
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
there should not be any extra power draw from the socket on the motherboard,... ithe 1-3 board is connected via USB to the motherboard so there should not be any power through that - the riser board gets its power from either a sata cable OR an molex cable, the choice of which one of the two to use is yours. you will however need enough 8 pin VGA ports on your PSU, and enough power to run all 8 risers (7 regular risers + the 1-3 riser board, each requiring a sata/molex/6pin depending on which risers you use)
Mining Hardware (1 year ago)
I mean it needs to draw more power from socket on motherboard . Are you using this for your 7cards mining rig? I didn't try this myself, cause thought it is waste of time:)
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
will work for mining on my 2 boards, what do you mean there is a lot of pressure on the motherboard socket? I am however told it does depend on if you motherboard wants to accept it, And if it wants to accept your GPUs. a lot must have to do with the MB. what motherboard are you trying?
Rusty Debier (1 year ago)
This is would be pretty awesome if I could get 12 gpus to run on a single mobo :D I have some old mobos that I use use which have a combined total of 4 pcie slots.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
It would be pretty awesome, but I dont know if that is possible. I have heard you can get lots running in ubuntu, but I think some driver edits need to be made to get 8+ working, and then it also just depends how much the certain installation will take, with it almost being random when going over 7 GPUs from what I am told.
Botond Arany (1 year ago)
so if i buy this i can put 18 cards to 1 motherboard? the windows and the motherboard support 18 gpu cards? 2000W psu can support 15 - 16 gpu ( msi rx 470) ?
eyajuda 13HEB8 (1 year ago)
PSU, you could combine 2,3, PSUs using (https://www.amazon.com/Add2PSU-Multiple-Power-Supply-Adapter/dp/B009P98Q8U). I figured that the limitation is more of bios, each gpu card is assigned by bios 256MB, so max each bios can do is 2GB(Approx 7 cards in windows, max 8 linus). if you can get a 64bit bios, u could brake the limit. Am currently investigating this and am getting close to an answer. I Found someone do 18gpu (Nvidia) for research not mining already.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
no probably not, max seems to be 7 cards in windows... i tried linux and could only get 7 cards to recognize also, i think for 8 plus you need to modify drivers and possibly some OS files, i would like to find out how to do this.
Ahmed Yousef (1 year ago)
Great Videos, Nice that it worked, I bought the same model but from MintCell and it was totally waste of money.. nothing there.. I tried it on different mobos but won't start. Is there anything special about installing the extender ? Thanks a lot
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
nothing special, all my boards are set to gen2 PCIE lanes and the GPUs as primary display adapter, using windows 10 on all of them. other than that, plugged in power and the GPUs and it was fine for max 7 GPUs.. but I am told some motherboards and some GPUs dont like to work with it, and although i did not run in to that problem, i suppose it greatly depends on the motherboard, example i ran into was with 8 GPU attached the probtc or anniversary would not even post... meanwhile on z97 gaming 5 msi, i could have 9 GPU and it would post but only recognise 7 (though it was probably recognising a few from the 1-3 risers and stopped recognising some that were directly plugged into the MB.
kestasn (1 year ago)
Wont there be any problems with power ? Maybe not ofcource... as every riser has its own power source.

on the other hand you could combine 2 or 3 Smaller psu using (https://www.amazon.com/Add2PSU-Multiple-Power-Supply-Adapter/dp/B009P98Q8U) it works fine
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
yes, you would need the proper power set up with enough 8 pin power ports at minimum, last I looked at evga.com I saw that the 1600G2 has 9 VGA 8 pins and 6 6pin power ports (and 2 8 pin cpu).. using all of those 15 ports you could hook up 7 GPUs, each with their own power to the riser and GPU and an SSD with its own cable (14 for the GPUs - with 2 GPU risers using ver 006 PCIE risers with 6 pin instead of molex, the remaining 5 GPUs using risers with molex)

Hi Cryptomined, you are a life saver i have an MSI B75MA-E33 with 1 single PCI-E 1x mobo and i was looking for a USB riser until i watched your video & now i want this one, tell me will it work without problems ? do you Ship them to Algeria and how much is the shipping cost ?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
it worked without problems for the 2 6-slot boards I tried, pro btc and anniversary. Though I am told it really depends on if the board will accept it. My guess is if your board has 1 PCIE 1x slot there is a good chance it will work. Can ship to Algeria, but maybe just by airmail, you can add to cart and then on the cart page there is a shipping estimator at the bottom, you can try to select Algeria and see what it says. email if any problems. but again I can not guarantee if will work with your board and/or GPUs.. im told some boards will take it, some GPUs will take it, but also told some wont... and although it worked with mine, im not sure what it wont work with. I did not try with the 295x2 cards for example so I dont know if it will work with them. it could, it could not, i only have 2 of those cards so I didn't see the point in trying.

Did you try it on Z170 chipset motherboard? Seems like it has got natural restriction of 4 PCIe cards. The lanes are are not available due to architecture.
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
but h81 probtc R2 just came out recently, so the probtc should be easier to find now I dont know if this will allow more than 4 with Z170.
Mandar Karhade (1 year ago)
Z170 cant use more than 4 so there it will be of great help. Now that H81 BTC pro are slowly getting scarce to find. LGA1151 is the new game.

I did nott ry z170 chipset, i have one skylake board but its "under maintanence" and waiting for me to stick some GPUs back in it... need time to waterblock them...

Thanks for video! Which motherboard do you use? Do more tests, please, it's quite interesting, especially due to lack of information about those extenders.

You should try with windows server 2016 (the version server of win10) Maybe it supports more than 7
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
yes maybe try to upgrade to win10 or check https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=712228.0

I ran 6xgpumod but one card still saying error code 43 in W7... maybe should I need to upgrade to W10?
Cryptomined (1 year ago)
yes but i think the natural max for win 10 is 7 GPUs. I would like to know if its capable of running 8 or 9 GPUs with some edits to drivers or other files
Mandar Karhade (1 year ago)
thank you. For windows 10 you do not need anything to run more than 6 GPUs. For windows 7 there is a simple registry mod available. Here is the link https://lbr.id.lv/6xgpu_mod/6xGPU_mod.html

Thumbs up for the vid bro, not sure i will invest in this till Windows can actually handle a large amount of cards, BTW, from 3.17 - end of video is just black, forget to trim a bit off?

Charif Lakchiri thanks for the information

On the z97 gaming, did you try disabling other stuff that's not used? like the m.2 port, LAN, sound, basically anything that could remotely be using pcie bus... Also, I read somewhere that to get 8 GPUs recognized and working, you want to uninstall the driver using DDU, reboot, extract driver package into a folder, plug one card, cancel automatic driver install, go to device manager and into driver tab for that card, navigate to driver folder, then let it pick up the driver from there. Reboot and repeat for all remaining GPU cards one at a time. Time consuming is an understatement, but worth a try if you have the time to spare.

yeah maybe better for boards with less PCIE slots, like boards with 4 or 5 PCIE slots,,.. ill get in there and trim that now thanks! though there is not guarantee they will work with any boards... it really depends if the motherboard will accept the 1-3 board AND if the 1-3 board will accept the GPUs... at least that is what I am told by who i get them from. you just have to try and see if it will work :) kinda like an experiment. lucky i got it to work on both probtc and anniversary - but 8 cards wont work on those boards... wont even post... on z97 with 8 or 9 attached - it will post, but the system can only use 7 of them.
