just a question. runs this card well with uhd resolution also in 60hz?
AveryPlays757 (8 hours ago)
Yes, works great with UHD. Just use a display port cable
Dylan Penev (11 days ago)
@AveryPlays757 what do you think of the SAPPHIRE Pulse Radeon RX 580? Does it also work well? Does your MSI RX 580 work well in DaVinci Resolve?
Dylan Penev (4 days ago)
I bought the PULSE 2 days ago. :)
AveryPlays757 (4 days ago)
The Pulse would actually work a bit better. Can't speak for performance in resolve though.
Yureka Mindset (11 days ago)
I am thinking of buy one of them tomorrow I have offer of a MacPro 2009(4,1) quad core 2.66ghz xeon processor with 16gb ram and 256gb SSD and two GT 120 graphics. I mainly want it to use it for using android studio and Xcode and programming. Should I buy it I am thinking of upgrading processor to 6core. Is it worth it ?

VoLtiX (1 month ago)
AveryPlays757 thank you so much I ended up updating to 10.13.5, but now It tears terribly, like really bad. Is there some type of v-sync setting hidden in Mac OS?
AveryPlays757 (1 month ago)
VoLtiX You have to have at least 10.12.6 or 10.13
VoLtiX (1 month ago)
I’m also only on a lower El Capitan version because I have the 2009 Mac Pro. Would it work better if I were to install Mac OS high Sierra?

AveryPlays757 Hi ! I have a 6 core 2012 Mac pro, with stock 5770 video card... What would you recommend today for a good value card that won't break the bank, with about 4 gigs of RAM ? Using Adobe premiere... Thanks !

Hey, so it's been some time since I upgraded my 4,1 with an RX 580. I just have a quick question: with this card, have you ever had your screen—under OSX—flash for a split second? I've only had this happen 4 or 5 times, and on very rare occasions, but it has happened. I'm really suspecting that it's just a slight driver hiccup (and may be remedied if I update to High Sierra), but it was still concerning to see. Thanks!
maccollectorZ (2 months ago)
Yeah, I was thinking that it was maybe just due to the fact that I'm currently running Sierra. I'm potentially going to update to HS soon.
AveryPlays757 (2 months ago)
Yes, actually. But not since HS
Sakurei (4 months ago)
I just bought a 5,1 mac pro. This will be my first actual mac pro. I'm wanting to put at least an rx580 4gb in. Is there anything I should know about it? I will be bootcamping it as well.
Messiah38 (3 months ago)
Sakurei if you going to bootcamp you need fan control app. An make shure it ok to apply your card dates on windows side . I killed my Radeon 7950 apply updates to it. AMD states that I shouldn’t upgrade drivers if your using bootcamp.
Where is the link for Power Cables? Thanks
Guilherme Paviani (4 months ago)
Hey man, i have a mac pro 5,1 with gtx 1060 card. Do you think that can i have more performance on premiere pro cc with opencl on amd rx card ? Actually i use cuda nvidia webdriver and dont have a gt120 plugged. You install any additional driver to rx580 works ?
AveryPlays757 (4 months ago)
No additional driver needed for the RX 580. The GTX 1060 will be better for Premiere Pro.
Paul Darrigo (5 months ago)
Final Cut Pro uses Open CL. It may work but not as fast. Apple link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202239 On the phone with MSI right now and they can not confirm if this card is OPEN CL.

Oddly, the rx480 I have in my hackintosh (high Sierra, 6 core 6th gen i7 without Intel graphics) the rx480 shows up fine and works great but fcpx errors as soon as I try to export. Anyone help?

NotOnYoutube4547455 (9 months ago)
Hey man, great video. I'm looking to buy a Mac Pro 5.1 and stick one of these in there. Did you need any extra cables or adapters to plug this card in? I'm not bothered about not having a bootscreen, but does FCPX export videos quicker? Does it fully work without any tinkering? Thanks!
maccollectorZ (9 months ago)
You'll get used to not having a bootscreen. Although, I'd recommend also buying a Mac Pro-specific GT 120 to have with you on the side. It's good to have a genuine card as well, so that you can use it for certain troubleshooting + the firmware update for 5,1s, in High Sierra.
AveryPlays757 (9 months ago)
hI! Yes, you will need a Dual6-pin to 8 pin adapter as well as two mini 6pin to 6pin cables. It renders a 5k Test file in 19seconds. The card works really well in FCPX. I noticed a big difference from my GTX 960
maccollectorZ (9 months ago)
Has anyone else tried this card under Bootcamp? Mine is having a HUGE problem under Windows 7, and I think it might be indicative of the OS being too old (even if AMD supports it). My RX 580 will NOT work without the presence of my GT 120. If I take the GT 120 out, it's as if the drivers for the RX 580 were never installed - the screen is black upon boot. Once I shut down, re-insert the GT 120, and the activate its generic Windows drivers, the RX 580 springs to life again. (Note that all other NVIDIA drivers were thoroughly wiped from the system.) Something tells me that I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get Windows 10. I've tried so many ways to remedy this issue, but I've come to no other conclusions.
AveryPlays757 (9 months ago)
Use Win 10, then update to creators. But I did the install With a burnt copy of W10 N Pro booting from that, but I did not use the bootcamp drivers.
maccollectorZ (9 months ago)
Yeah, I was thinking of using my GT 120 or Radeon 4870 to do so. I think that the GT 120 won't be a problem, even if Windows 10 tries to install a driver for it. As long as I can later remove those irrelevant drivers and have only the RX 580 ones remain, I think it should be fine.  Did you do an installation without the help of Bootcamp? AFAIK, with a Mac Pro, the user is better off simply formatting the separate Bootcamp disk and booting straight from the Win 10 DVD. Then, I guess, the Bootcamp drivers are downloaded beforehand and then applied after Win 10 has finished. (BTW, should I use Win 10 or the Creator's Update?)
AveryPlays757 (9 months ago)
I had to install my RX 580 on Win10 with my Old Radeon 5770.
maccollectorZ (9 months ago)
Specifically those using this card? People were telling me that it was because my GT 120 was conflicting with it, but I realized that the issues I'm having are unique. Whereas others have an issue with the GT 120 interfering, I'm seeing an issue where my new card cannot work *without* the presence of the GT 120. I think I definitely will have to try Windows 10.
AveryPlays757 (9 months ago)
I've heard of people having issues under Win7 in bootcamp. I think it needs Windows 10 to work.
PlanB (9 months ago)
Thanks for this interesting upgrade. Since OpenCL looks like it's leading in CG rendering better than nvidia's gpu like in Blender eevee technology, I was looking for amd gpu upgrade for Mac Pro Towers. One thing I was curious about this upgrade is the bandwidth. nvidia's unflashed gpu would only work within pcie 1.0. So what about AMD's?
PlanB (9 months ago)
Thanks for the reply! Since Apple is working on eGPU and supported drivers, I hope those can influence the tower's somewhat better in the near future. Until then, I stick with what I have. Thanks!
AveryPlays757 (9 months ago)
I believe it is the same, PCIe [email protected] and 2.5GT/s
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Hey, is that a PCIe SSD in your Mac Pro? How is it in High Sierra?
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Cool, thanks. Oh, and I received my Sapphire PULSE RX 580 8GB today. I'm loving it! It's performing SO much better under OSX than my GTX 1060 was. My entire machine feels much snappier, as the GPU is powering through the UI much more efficiently.
AveryPlays757 (10 months ago)
Yes it is! it works flawlessly in HS with APFS
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Aw, you beat me to it - just by a couple weeks! I thought I'd have the first YouTube video showing an RX 580 in a Mac Pro. Currently waiting for mine to ship. By the way, why does OSX identify the card as, 'R9 xxx'? AFAIK, the 580 should show up correctly. Does it have anything to do with the fact that it's MSI-branded?
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Ah, yes, I recall that now. I saw a YouTube video where someone was using a NITRO card, and it appeared to have the same issue (if one could even call it a real issue). I personally picked up a like-new Sapphire PULSE edition, since it's the exact one that Apple includes in their beta eGPU kit. Looking forward to popping it into my machine!   And, it *was* a bit expensive, but I snagged a male 8-pin to 2x mini-6-pin cable from Amazon. I was caught off-guard the moment I saw how you were plugging your card in, but I remember that the Mac Pro uses miniature 6-pin connectors, and you were simply adapting the normal-sized 6-pin cables to mini-6-pin, from the 8-pin to 6-pin adapter.
AveryPlays757 (10 months ago)
Exactly that reason. The only RX 580's that show up properly is the Sapphire PULSE 8GB Card.
Thomas John (10 months ago)
it's too bad that apple's VDA api doesn't support HEVC hardware decoding on the GPU. It would make 4K havoc playback a lot smoother. I've sent Apple a message asking them to implement this feature. Maybe you can do the same ?  If many people ask. for the feature perhaps apple will do it.
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Perhaps they'll do so by the time the eGPU kit is fully released.
Andy's Video Log (10 months ago)
I just noticed that I watched a lot of your videos, great job on upgrading your Mac Pro. I really wish I can get a boot screen with the rx580. If there was a flashed version for Macs' I would pick it up in a second. You should check if your getting metal support through FCPX (Bruce X benchmark should run sub 30 seconds), I herd from the grapevine that the RX 580 are not fully supported by apple. Also I noticed that I use 50gb to 60gb of ram while editing videos so additional ram will do wonders for productivity while editing.
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
I hope there aren't actually glitches, because that would really suck.
Andy's Video Log (10 months ago)
I've herd that the APFS used in High Sierra has been buggy on pcie adaptered m.2 on Mac Pro. I have no proof as I will not risk my Mac Pro. But until there is more evidence, there really is no reason to go to High Sierra.
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Yes, my machine is a 4,1 which is currently flashed as a 5,1. People said that a genuine card is needed for the firmware update associated with High Sierra, but I guess they were referring to any card that has indeed been flashed (whether genuine or not). Oh, have there been issues encountered with PCIe SSDs, in relation to the High Sierra update? I'd like to know, because I run an SM941 PCIe SSD on Lycom PCI adapter as my main boot disk.
Andy's Video Log (10 months ago)
I have a quadro fx card that was made for Mac so I can could use that one instead of the rx280x. But a flashed card works the same. As far as the new firmware update, once you used the 3rd party installer to flash to 5,1. You can use your Mac Pro like a 5,1. The new update will flash without 3rd party installer and on flashed video card. But I have yet to install high Sierra, there is way too many bugs associated with the new APFS, especially because I'm using the SM951 on a pci m.2 card.
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Would have been good to have kept that card, just in case. AFAIK, a genuine card is needed for firmware updates... however, I'm wondering if a flashed card works just as well(?) There's a new firmware update associated with High Sierra - it's for 5,1 Mac Pros (or 4,1s flashed as 5,1s).
davidmartiniTV (10 months ago)
this is the best gk for your mac, looks great and the support is natively also on high sierra :),
Andy's Video Log (10 months ago)
I don't think it was the graphics card that was bottle necking your editing rig. I choose the R9 280x because that is the most powerful graphic card Mac actually supports with boot screen and I really wanted the boot screen for dual booting into windows. I recently finished my upgrade and get insane numbers in Cinebench along with very quick render times and zero lag 4k editing. check out my specs, prices, and process of the upgrades https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YdpN1kk2Wk&t=876s
Andy's Video Log (8 months ago)
os selection...?? trouble shooting?? at the time of building there wasn't any flashed gtx 1080ti's, at this current moment there is no gtx 1080ti flashed for Mac on eBay. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black?
Chocolate Sheep (8 months ago)
that's not even the most powerful card that supports mac os and boot screen. you can buy a flashed gtx 1080ti from ebay. but who cares about boot screens, with an ssd is irrelevant, why would anyone pay extra for a flashed 1080ti is beyond me, only ignorance I can assume.
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
BTW,  he looks to have a PCIe SSD in his Mac Pro, and he looks to be running HS.
Andy's Video Log (10 months ago)
Windows 10, yes that is the other way to boot to windows, but most times I just with to boot to windows one time and when I restart I want to it to boot to OS X all the time. Holding option on boot up gives me the option to choose to boot to my windows drive without having to go into bootcamp in windows to reboot to OS X. usually I only use windows to run bench marks and check temperatures. Most games I play works well in OS X at reduced frame rates but doesn't effect game play.
maccollectorZ (10 months ago)
Which version of Windows do you use? I have a spare SSD for Windows 7; and, upon wishing to boot into it, I simply select the disk from within System Preferences and then restart. When I wish to return to OSX, I go into Windows' Bootcamp control panel and select my OSX disk and reboot. No boot screens necessary. Of course, I sometimes need my GT 120 for very specific things (such as the inevitable OS update or firmware update).
